  • Well folks, we're starting to see some good growth down here in my area. I went to check on the single brood boxes and I was happy with what I saw. I saw boxes that I will need to give some more hive space to, that's for sure, but I'm also seeing bees that can easily starve if I'm no careful. I invite you to come along on this video and see what I'm talking about.

    Always interesting to see how you do things your area. We just had a 60 degree and bright sun yesterday and 48 and bright sun today at noon. And now it's snowing and 30 at 6pm and dropping to 4 above zero by morning. Hard for the bees to handle our Minnesota spring.

    Hello from north central iowa. Very challenging year for me, seems like every other week we have record highs then lows 50 degree swings is common this winter. Bees don’t know what’s going on. Bringing in soft maple pollen yesterday, three weeks early. Its really interesting to watch how you do bees. Going to have to get one of those hive movers. Thanks for all the tips.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  6 місяців тому +1

      Randy, those temp swings you’re describing is our winter in a nutshell. They adjust fine. I think the hive lifter is nice and it definitely helps me out. It is slower and not a time saver. But it is a back saver. I can move double deeps very easily and a few mediums at a time.

But the weather here has been in the 60s and 70s for the last two weeks so the bees here has exploded in population. But spring is definitely upon us. • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  6 місяців тому +2

      I agree. I like to run them. But I just don't see a way to do it for the length of season and without at least letting them brood up into a couple mediums or a deep prior to the flow. I can always shale them down and put in an excluder, but then after harvest, I have 50 deeps with brood comb that I have to keep stored away form the moths. But if I could, I'd run all singles.

So time will tell on them. My brothers 9 hives 8 are doing good and one absconded some time during the last couple weeks since its been warm. Spring is gonna be early again this year.

    Hello Mike it looks like your singles are size spot on . Cutting the strips are a great idea in the Patties an the wire is a great idea . I run screen top inter covers on all my colonies an they are all a deep an a medium brood box but my wire is the #8 I guess I could just make some with the 1/4”or 1/2” hardware cloth covers. My colonies here on my home yard was coming out of winter really small but in the last two weeks they have blown up to a size that I am getting worried about getting to big . I went into two of them the middle of this week an saw a few drones but not many . Last year I was doing splits the second week of February so it is looking like it will be the second week of March this year. We never know what is going to happen. Have a good week. Thanks

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  6 місяців тому +2

      Same here with the small size and now a bog blow up. I don't know if they all grew a lot, but one the other day I looked at really blew up. The singles got second deeps already. The growth starts once we see some nectar and that's what's happening here for sure.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  6 місяців тому +3

      I actually don’t ever feed pollen sub, except maybe a weak NUC or a cell builder. This is the first year I’ve fed them all supplement, and it was because we went into winter so weak. Normally my bees are semi strong in the fall and very heavy, but the summer drought was worse in the than I thought, so with weaker than normal colonies coming out of winter, I purposely decided to boost them, it has worked quite well as I’m looking at some really nice colonies here at home. They are looking great Mike. Im in transition to single brood from 1 1/2s. My problem is I dont have much deep drawn comb. I can pull up some drawn comb, or pull some for splits. However, I've found that they are slow to draw comb in the bottom if they have an overhead option. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. Im pretty concerned about swarming if dont give them space.

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  6 місяців тому +1

      Yea, unlike a lot of folks say, bees really aren’t inclined to move up, they’re inclined to build down. So I definitely see what you’re saying. Honestly, what I have done is leave the bottom with all drawn, but checker in about two, and up to three in the bottom, and then all the foundation up top and feed them slightly less than 1:1. I do believe seeding one brood frame with larvae in the top helps too. I used to leave all drawn in the bottom and 3 to 4 drawn in the center in the top, and then the top outsides all foundation and let a light flow push them to draw those out. Or a light feed if no nectar coming in. That’s my experience.
