Hello, I am a hobby beekeeper in Southeast Louisiana. I have been keeping bees for 12 years now and decided to create some videos to show all aspects of beekeeping in my little operation in my region of the country. I always tell people, I am not doing 'How To' videos, only 'How I Do' videos. It's simply a VLOG to show some of the different tasks associated with beekeeping. From the fun stuff, like splitting hives, doing hive inspections, and harvesting honey, to the tedious stuff, like painting and building boxes and scraping frames.
This channel was initially set up to share videos with family and friends out of state, so there are a few old videos that I've kept on just because. I hope you enjoy the channel.

Beekeepers Rest But Never Stop | Winter Fun
Well folks, winter is upon us and so are the mundane tasks and jobs that some of us dread and others just enjoy as a past time. I don't mind small and tedious tasks too much, but it really doesn't matter because they still have to be done. In this video, I need to clean some equipment and take care of a hive that has a tray full of DE needing changed. Come on along and let's get this work done.

Beekeeping Season Ends | Did I Do Enough
Переглядів 3 тис.21 день тому
Well folks, here we are at the end of another season. This is the time of year that I begin to really think about how the season went, what needs to change for next season, and what kind of equipment needs to be bought or built. Of all of the thoughts that I have, the most predominant thoughts are those of wondering if I did enough for my bees, or even did I do too much. It's always a mind game...

Hello everyone and welcome back to SE Louisiana. It's back to the bee yard to check on the colony that sustained terrible losses and then was robbed due to a mistake I made with mite treatments. Both were organic compounds for the treatments, but when both met in the hive, and it caused quite the issue and a lot of dead bees. I am not 100% sure it was the treatments, but it sure looks that way....

Well folks, this was a hard video to make as far as the subject matter. It's always hard when tough things happen to the colonies, but it's even more tough when we the beekeeper caused it. Not only that, showing a mistake to the world is very humbling. So join me as I tell you what happened and what I found after a disastrous mistake. As the days get shorter and the golden rod starts drying up, we know that the beekeeping season is coming to an end. Well, nothing really ends since the tedious tasks of equipment replacement and planning for next year begins. It's always something, but not in this video. I am wrapping up OAV, pulling the pollen trap, and cleaning up some wax. At least its a much slower pace. Come on out to the...

Well folks, I attended another convention. This time I was invited by John Hill of HillCo and he asked if I could help out with their booth. Well, that was an easy 'Yes' for me. Beekeepers Hate Varroa Mites | Just Vaping with Bees
Переглядів 2,3 тис.Місяць тому
Hello everyone. With the mite counts high on a few hives in-town, and some Oxalic Vapor treatments underway on them, I decided to go ahead and work on the hives at home. Why not, right? It's time for the bees to slow down and settle in for the winter and set the cruise control, but mites can't wait. I hate the mites and they are the deadliest threat to the honeybees. So here we go, vaping with ...
Checking a Swarm Box | Varroa Mite Surprise

I finally remembered that I needed to go out and check a swarm box that is still hanging in a tree. Out of sight of mind is definitely the theme of this situation, but that's ok, I let the bees be bees. Afterwards, I decided to check on the hives in town and WOW, I found trouble. Come on up and clean mine next Mike. That is always my winter chore, clean the building up. You are spot on regarding quality of equipment, competition is good. Cya soon.
Hey Mike great video. I was wondering how big is your honey warming bottler.
It’s 16 gallons. I keep it stocked at all times and it makes it easy to always have honey ready.
' ;ll;' ';Mike thanks for reminding me.... had trouble getting out of my own way, maybe it's just getting old.... Mug up! It's raining today at 35 F...it's an inside day. Take care
We ordered an extractor. They sent to. We’re obviously sending one back.
lol the saying is “ never put off tomorrow what can be done today “ my saying is:: ( winter is coming an I need something to do inside when it’s zero outside 😂😂😂) I had a 20 by 20 climate control building that I raised pedigree and meat rabbits for 24 years . I converted it to my honey house has heat air conditioning humidity control 🤷🏻♂️ couldn’t see building a new one when this one Was just a matter of ripping the cages an shot trays out an a spray down of the Stainless walls. All ready had a 6” drain set up. But I finished up Dec 5th cleaning the honey house an covered everything untill 2025 . Now I am spending the winter days in the woodshop turning out hive boxes and frames. I figured on popping the lids an adding feed spacers a dumping “doctored” sugar mid January ( during our January thaw) before the fridge late January a February Michigan weather comes back..usually around late March I slap on pollen patties, too excite her highness 😁
Hot water is key....bee blessed,
Hi Mike, I took your advice on your thoughts on 9 frames or 10 frames in the honey super, Well it worked, I put 9 frames in my honey super and i got very fat frames of honey, Thankyou for your advice ❤😂😊
Even with screen bottom boards, I still lean the boxes forward, asbi use Ashforth feeders, which have their access area on one side, which is where I lean the hive towards, that way any syrup can still be collected OK.
I’m curious what you use for flooring in your honey house. I have to honey proof my floor as it is the original osb and yep it’s had to meet up with a few gallons of honey 😩
To true Mike!
See you in a few weeks!
Hello Hello Mr. Mike . The newer bee keepers remember when the season is over the bee work is by far is not over . If you are expanding much at all the winter work can be just as time consuming as the summer responsibilities. On my nine frame maxant I let the bees have first choice in it an that helps out a lot then I do wash it out outside but not up on the motor part just to get maybe wax that may be on the basket. In taking it all apart I keep all together motor and basket then it really doesn’t need a lot of water washing . It mostly just finding little bits of wax that I could not see with it together. You talking about your maxant when I ordered this last one it did not even come with a honey drain valve it came with a plastic pipe cap to screw on it . This new bee barn I am building I am going to put in a shower floor pan to be able to wash things like the extractor etc . Hope all is well an have a good week. Thanks
It is nice to see some “ real time “ information about how different companies’ equipped works !😄👍👍
Hey Mike, you and your wife so sell a lot of honey. It seems the longer you sell honey the more repeat customers you can have. I agree, clean up the last time when it's slower times, that's what I do also.
Mike, I'm glad I took your advice this spring. Built my honey house 16' x 24'. Even at that, it filled up fast.
Great stuff Mike. As usual. Tedious stuff. But it has to be done.
MAXANT HAS SOME GOOD STUFF BUT THEY ALSO VERY PRICEY. THANKS FOR SHARING MIKE.
Thanks for the honey house tour. I’m on the verge of setting up a new honey house. Your experience will save me from numerous mistakes. See you at the expo!
Enjoyed your cleaning video Mike
I love my HillCo extractor. I'm basically doing the same stuff. Cleaning all the gunk off my supers and old hive bodies. Building new boxes and frames and painting. Building new hive stands. Busy busy busy.. On a side note, I was going to buy my first apimaye this coming year, now I'm going to wait for hillcos version of it. It looks like it'll be a great hive and I'm sure at a much better price
The drudges of beekeeping.
I wish my honey house was that clean right now. 😁
Hey Mike. I got my ultra max last year and I love it. It’s little bigger what I need now but I didn’t want to buy another one when I expanded. Great video my friend and can’t wait to see you at the expo
I agree, im replacing all my screens with solids. Hope to puck up some of Bob B HDO boards at NAHBE.
00:21:25 * Down to the last drop! It's funny that the design hasn't changed for years!😮
Thanks for sharing Mike
Hey there. First comment, hurray...
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Hope y'all had a great Thanksgiving!!!
Hey Mike. Thanks for the video. I'm finishing my 4th year. i'm feeling the same as you. Questioning did I do enough. Im in SE PA, just north of Philadelphia. My hives are closed up d]for the Winter. All have Hive Alive Fondant on them. I lost two hives this Fall. One due to mites - I was too late with my treatment. The other absconded - I think that was due to a failing queen. Hoping for the best for the Winter.
I do it every year even when I do what I know to do. I think it sounds like you did ok for only having 2 gone. Hope you come out of winter as strong as ever. In the end all we can do is do what we know, and improve on where me go wrong. Take care!!
Thats a lot of honey!
Yes indeed Tim. My record by 1000 lbs. for sure
Your the reason i bought a seven frame apimaye last year at nahbe.Ive got two now and one is empty and one has bees im overwintering in.17 degrees here tonight in Danville ,Ky.Im sure those girls are reaping the benefits of the insulation in the apimaye.Great video again Mike and hope to see you in louisville.
Thanks Tim. I enjoy that little 7 frame. I have another one to pick up at NAHBE this year.
@@MikeBarryBees you take time to share your videos with everyone and i know it takes a lot of behind the scenes work too .Thanks. I thought i saw Randy wearing one your t-shirts or maybe it was Mr Ed in their video. Was i wrong?
@@timmorris7022 You are right Tim. I gave him one and he wore it for 5 days straight...LOL!!
@ i gotta buy one
@@timmorris7022 I need to see what I have left. I only ordered a few for my wife and I and for a couple folks, including Randy and the Mr. Ed guy. I’ll bring them to the Expo and we’ll see if I have one your size.
Love it!
Thanks! I appreciate it.
Great video
Thanks so much, I’m glad you liked it!
I drill holes in each end of reducers for screws. This lets me just put against box, start screw and that locks them in place.
Great idea!! I hate sliding them in under the box.
Thanks for the instructional on the Apimaye Hive. I just ordered 2 of the 7framers to pickup at NAHBE on your recommendation of the product.
You are welcome Tom. Hope you enjoy them and hope to see you soon at the Expo.
How’s that particular bee bonet working for you ?
That veil works pretty well. It could use some tweaking and I think HillCo is actually doing that. I just wanted something without the strings.
Thanks for the update MIke, I'm sure glad you didn't harm any bugs on this video. So you plan to retire and cut back on hives or increase the number of hives??
Hey there Russell. Well, I reckon you kind of got that answer in the live stream. I just need to figure out timeframes for everything and if I really want to have a lot of work in my life. I ordering as though I'm going to grow though...LOL!!
Finally!.... A Beekeeper that lets us observe the majestic beauty of the smaller hive beetle. Instead of that one fella that savagely and brutally un-alived them on his channel. It's so upsetting we're not gonna mention Joey's name at all!
I'm glad I was able to shield you from any graphic images. The small hive beetle in its natural habitat is a beautiful thing you know.
Dream Big brother 🙏
Thanks Brother!!
Hey Barry, love watching your videos! Thank you for taking the time to explain your system 😊 I have noticed that the bottleneck in your process is filtering. Have you considered having the honey flow straight into a bucket from your extractor, tipping that into your wax cappings in the uncapping tank and then filtering from that tank only?
I have not tried it that way. Not a bad idea because you are correct, the straining is definitely my choke point. I have a 5 gallon cold tank that has screens to and that helps too. I need to think about this next season Thanks for the insight from your perspective!!
The weather looks nice. Here in Michigan it is 23 Degs. Just about Christmas Time and Snow
We have only had a few cold nights. We're staying so pleasant right now. I love the break from the heat.
Great video Mike. I agree 100% about NOT messing with the hive in the Fall/Winter. Risk vs reward is WAY too high!! Heading for the teens later this week up here. Brrrr..... Take care and see you soon!!
Thanks Keith!!
Hope you had a great Thanksgiving as well.
Thanks and hope you did as well!!
great video Mike...i run D.E. in the bottom tray and small hive beetles have a tough time
Thanks Stan! I added some to that tray after I shot the video.
Beetle watching. 😆🤣
I love to just observe the beetle in its natural habitat....LOL!!
Is this 1:1 or 2:1 syrup?
Sorry Phil for the delay in replying. I try to always get to the questions immediately and then go thru the rest as I get time. I was feeding 2:1 for them to bulk up on.
Hey Mike! I’m glad that no beetles were harmed in the making of this video 😜😂
Yep, safe and sound Todd...safe and sound....
All those Beatles 😮. Lol.
Beetles, beetles everywhere...No doubt.
Hello Mike glad to see that one colony is still kicking along . I think it will be just fine now . Ya I had five colonies that the queen didn’t get back but I am sure they did not get mated because it was so late in the season with just a very few drones around so I combined them to save what I had left. I am glad we are finally getting some colder weather but it is going to be lows is upper 10’s -lower 20’s an highs in the mid 40’s . I am going to have to find somewhere else to get my Nucs from. The nucs I was getting I am just having tooooooo much trouble with the bees . I will do a bunch of splits this year but I would like to get a faster build up this year. After losing so many from one yard from poison an then having to combine those five . That has hit hard this season. Thanks Mike have a great week. Thanks
It's tough for sure when we have those off years. I remember when I lost 80% to a deliberate poisoning. I almost didn't start back up. I wasn't moving a ton of honey then and actually had down-sized due to my job then, so I wasn't looking for a fast build back. But with swarms and splitting the last 5 that were left, I made it back within two season. It's tough, but when we love what we do, we make it work and the bees respond well.
