    I thank God I stumbled over this. The presence of the sublime is impossible to miss - true, individual genius, lifting us to transcendence. Stunning. A thousand thanks to all those involved - and to Nico Muhly.... You can make the flow of the universe, and our twitch in its flow, audible. I don't know how to thank you for our brief companionship. So, simply, thank You.

    So much pain, happiness and mutually exclusive emotions. One day people will understand...However, how far will this cutting edge of musical thought go to that moment?

    This is THE composition of 2020. It should win every award. I can't imagine another piece addressing the crisis of its time with such aplomb. I've been following Muhly's work for a while, and I even think he might have "better" pieces--the concertos come to mind--but for anyone who loves classical music and realized the threat to it posed by 2020 (and I'm aware that there were other, more serious threats to families, communities, lives, etc), this is THE piece. Really moving.

      As much as Muhly's technical writing evolves, I still can't help but I love his early piece "Motion" the most.
      That really is not the most cohesive, or technically established piece.
      But its the voice that really attracts me, and very few later pieces of Muhly does that for me

      my only critique of this piece is,in being a Muhly fan, this work sounds like a Muhly jukebox piece

    An incredible piece. Just what I needed tonight, although I didn't know it until I heard!

      Why is it "incredible"? To me (and I have a doctorate in musicology),it is a load of cheap and nasty codswallop.

    This is actually muhly outdoing himself for the first time in a few years, at least to my ears. There is an audible progress in his stylistic choices, not a complete shedding of skin, just a fresh update of his vocabulary. Oh and the way it unfolds reminds me a lot of his older piece drones, variations, ornaments, especially at the point of dessner's guitar entry.

    Only someone absolutely steeped in 16C counterpoint could have written this. It is beautiful

    • @frankfeldman6657
      @frankfeldman6657 3 роки тому

      There's no counterpoint. It's all textures.

      @@frankfeldman6657 I never said that it was otherwise. One can either see what i meant, or you cannot.

      @@frankfeldman6657 Contrapuntal writing can be implemented into compositions in different ways. It does not only manifest itself in lines moving independently like in classical works. Thats a limited way of looking at what counterpoint is capable of achieving.
      Muhly's textural writing is not just textures. Its got foreground shifts; different lines spikes at different times, intertwined into each other, yet maintains high level of clarity. Its not a dull, flat texture that everything blurs together.
      This is a sign of solid counterpoint training.
      That being said, there are still some very obvious counterpoint in this piece right at the beginning, at 2:17 for example, you cannot tell me that is not counterpoint. I don't know how you even missed that in the first place
