I have not been able to image for two years due to spinal fusion surgery with lots of complications but I’m slowly getting better and I hope to be out there imaging again by end of summer or fall this year albeit in better temperatures. Keep up the great work. Love your videos. Luis
I haven't tested my EAF below -20 yet, but will keep it in mind. How about a dew strap? Waiting for a clear night to test my new camera here. Nice video as always, keep up the good work!

I am really enjoying your videos! Especially ones with the 190MN. I have this same scope and struggle under much better (temperature) conditions to get results 1/2 as good as yours! I wish you continued success!
Great Video David. I love the way you just lay down on the snow covered ground and stare at the stars! Its a pain having to go back to manual focus after being used to the EAF, but hopefully it will be fine again when its warmer! My EAF played up the other night and I lost over 1 hour of subs, they were all out of focus! Don't know what caused it, but seems to be ok now! Your M81 looks brilliant, great work, keep it up and Clear skies!
Thank you Simon! The image lacks some detail and has quite bad SNR, I had to throw away almost two hours of lum data. Let's hope for some warmer temperatures soon. Clear skies!
😅 That's a good question, but it's not always this cold. But sometimes I fantasizing about doing astrophotography in shorts. The summer could be pretty hot here, but then the night is all bright though.
It is amazing that any electronic equipment would work at those temps! I suppose that NASA has figured out how to get things to work in temps much colder than -33oC, but they also have a slightly larger budget to work with than us! Keep up the inspiring work David. Dr B from Manitoba, Canada
Beautiful image! Here in Canada, I was imaging at minus 20 Celsius the other night and my EFW froze up and wouldn’t switch from H to S. It’s supposed to be clear and minus 30 tomorrow night, hopefully my EAF doesn’t freeze up too.
@David Jenkins Great! Maybe there are some batch variations? It's only -5-10C now but next time it's cold I will try with a modified dew heater band!
Enjoyed watching you take in the stars. I haven’t automated my acquisition because I enjoy being out and doing everything manually. Nice result, but unfortunate that the eaf konked out on you. It’s a tough hobby! Cheers!
I had the same issues with my EAF but issue was with the ASI Air. Check the settings in the AIR. The latest firmware update supposedly resolved the issue. It had set the Max Travel setting to Zero; removed the backlash setting, and so on.
Thanks David sorry about the EAF thang! As others have said, maybe a small ish dew heater tape. Do you think the drawtube maybe seizing up in the cold? Weather in South West of UK is hovering around zero degrees C but the humidity is 90% at night!!
I tried to loosen the tension on the drawtube but it did not help. First I thought that was the problem, but now I'm pretty sure the problem is in the EAF. A small heater tape will probably help to solve this, I will order some stuff and try! 0° with 90% humidity sounds quite demanding. At least, the air is very dry up here!
Yes ... in China -30 ° is unlikely to happen, the designers of the ZWO did not foresee everything)) I look at your procedure for installing all the equipment and every time I think, I can build a remote complex, a frame on which I assembled everything warm and only rolled it out on a sled winter, summer on wheels. I also carry everything in parts and assemble it in my yard and I’m already pretty tired of it, now I’m drawing sketches of an astro cart, on which I will place 90 percent of the entire setup, except for a tripod or column.
That sounds as a pretty nice solution. It's a lot of gear to carry around. I use a small plastic sled now, and it helps. I also look into a lighter set up so I can more easily go out to remote locations. This hobby is a lot of problem solving and find solutions that works for you own situation!
Love watching your videos. The worst i've experienced is -17 and I wouldn't have dreamed of going out to image. Probably a daft question, but couldn't you just wrap a dew heater round the EAF? Keep up the great work.
Thank you for watching Robert! Yes a dew heater is probably the most easy solution but I think I will make a more slick solution it I find the type of heated plate I'm looking for. Something like this (in swedish though) www.conrad.com/p/thermo-tech-polyester-heating-foil-self-adhesive-12-v-dc-12-v-ac-2-w-ip-rating-ipx4-55-mm-1216621?searchTerm=thermo%20tech%20po&searchType=suggest&searchSuggest=product
How is your EQ6-r tracking in those temperatures? Mine doesn't like -25°C. Both axis get very stiff. I don't think SW used grease that was intended to be used at low temperatures.
The guiding is actually pretty good even in these temperatures. I had a mean error of about 0.7-0-8 this session. I have not done anything with the mount so maybe there is some batch differences, I don't know!?
Hello David, I wondered about a solution as others have. I have used mine to -25 but worried the whole time that the mechanical components would seize. I was gonna suggest a dew heater as someone else has. Would it be possible to use a different lubricant like graphite? Keep us posted, I suspect you will arrive at something uniquely suited.
Hello Gregory, I will look into it. I think the most easy solution is to heat with a pad powered from the asiair. There is pretty much space inside the EAF so I think it's possibly to make a slick solution if I find a small enough heated pad.
@@NorthernPanorama Yes, I agree, probably easiest to use some type of heating pad. Dew heater to wrap around, powered from ur asiair or directly from battery. Has ur battery held up ok in the cold? Keep us posted as to how you work it out, much good luck!
haha that would be great! If they dare! 😄I use cooling but the main reason is to get exact temperatures on each sub so I can use darks from my library! But when it's around -30C it's too cold to run the camera at -20C. There should be a camera heater too! 😁

Thanks Tully! A heating band is probably the most easy solution. But I think of make something with a heated plate like this.
