The iPhone 16 Pros will shoot 12MP ultra wide photos once the light level hits below a certain threshold. I think Apple knew the low light capabilities at full 48MP is just not good. They have confidence in the main sensor (1x) to allow 48MP full res in low light (without night mode) but not for the ultra wide (0.5x)

One professional Aurora photographer told me the 16 pro is great. But I’m unsure now and certainly don’t want to spend the money on the 16 pro if it’s going to perform worse than the 15 pro.
@@ShayneMostyn thanks for the info. im not sure the aurora at the strength I saw it at the other day counts as low light anymore 😆 to be fair it felt like it lit up the street when the whole sky above me was bright pink. I can see why when taking shots of stars and galaxy’s if there is an issue with low light the 15 pro would be better. I guess I can always sell the 16 pro if it isn’t working for me and swap it for a 15 anyway.
The sensor specs are identical save for a faster interface, so I think as you said, it has more to do with software. Also, I do notice the 16 was slightly darker, perhaps the reason why there was more color in the stars and slightly less noise? It might have stacked differently too. Remember, the iPhone even in RAW, doesn't take a single snap from the sensor.
Very nice comparison, thank you! Both Photos you took were 30 seconds. So why does the Metadata say 10 sec?? This has always confused me on the İphone 15 max pro.

Thanks for testing this out, Shayne! Is there any specific reason why haven't you tested the Pixel 9 Pro XL this year? It has a nice, new ultra wide as well, and its astrophotography is strong as ever!
Great vid! I’ve got 2 questions for you - 1. Should you always use raw instead of heif max for these types of shots? 2. Is there any difference when shooting in heif/raw vs heif max/raw max, or is it all the same because they bin to 12mp?
Thank you, an excellent review! “little incremental differences” seem Apple’s specialty now. Is there really a 48 mp sensor in the 16 Pro, and did you pre-order yours? We have to wait another 40 days, maybe more-and prices are not trivial (especially given those increments).
didn't use the wide angle of 16 pro max properly, it only takes 48 mp if u manually set it to pro max on top right otherwise it's just a crappy 12 mp camera on ultra wide.
Hey, I want a 16 pro but it’s just too expensive so I’m probably going to have to go with the regular 16. Do you think you could try using that? Great video by the way.
The sensor size for the ultra wide seems to be no different than the 15 pro, just the change to the quad Bayer sensor. The sensor size difference between the main camera and the ultra wide is huge, 1/1.14" vs 1/2.6"
The iPhone 15 Pros and 16 Pros both use a 1/1.28” main sensor actually. Rumors said 1/1.14” but it didn’t come true. So Apple has been using the same 1/1.28” main sensor since 14 Pro (3 years now). They’ve been using that same 1/2.55” ultrawide sensor since the 14 Pro (also 3 years now) unfortunately.
It’s also pretty sad from 11 Pro, 12 Pro, 13 Pro, 14 Pro we had sensor size increases all of those 4 years then suddenly Apple stopped giving new hardware the last 3 years
@@chrisak49 I'm also dissapointed. Last 3 generations, only slight improvement. Been doing long exposure shots on my android with iso100 and 30s+ exposures, and the dng files out of the camera are just great to work with. Hopefully Apple would allow manual control of iso and shutter speed in their default camera app soon.
I was wondering if you could show a comparison of the 0.5x ultra wide night shots from the 15 pro vs 16 pro? I’ve just upgraded from an 11 pro, and was quite disappointed to hear various sources complaining that the 48mp ultra wide results in significantly worse low light performance than the 12mp ultra wide on 15 pro :/ E.g. in Fstopper’s review “Iphone 16 pro camera test (major flaws)” he was shocked at how bad the low light photos came out on 16 pro vs 15 pro and 14 pro. It seems almost as bad as the 11 pro’s ultra wide was. One of the main reasons I was looking forward to the upgrade was to get a much better 0.5x camera, with better low light performance.
Thanks for the video! Was the ultra wide shot in RAW mode? It looked like it may have been turned off. Got some nice moonlit mountain scenes with my 14 pro, but may want to upgrade if both main and ultra wide lenses are better in low light.
Even in RAW mode, anytime an iPhone uses night mode, it pixel bins down to 12MP anyway. Honestly, your iPhone 14 Pro has the same main sensor (1/1.28”) and same ultrawide sensor (1/2.55”) as the 16 Pro. It’s not really worth upgrading. I noticed the 16 Pro ultrawide is actually softer and less bright vs my 15 Pro.
@@chrisak49 From the previous video comparing the iPhone 15 Pro versus the 14 Pro it looked like the stars and galactic core were much sharper. I’m not sure what sort of software created this if the lenses are identical, but something made it better?
In summary, the iPhone 16 Pro can indeed deliver UA-cam-quality 4K HDR video. Its advanced recording capabilities, combined with a high-quality display, make it suitable for both casual users and professionals looking to create high-quality video content it’s the closest I’ve seen to UA-cam 4k hdr so far .
Doesn’t turning on ProRaw Max format in the photos using the 1x zoom gives you the full 48mp while not having it on doesn’t give you the highest resolution?
The blue lines on 16and red on 15 are in almost the exact same spot, it really may be just part of pushing the night mode to the very max. Idk I’ve been testing my camera like a crazy person 😅
According to camera settings you can only shoot 12MP with night mode. In order to shoot 48MP it needs to be a standard image with enough light at .5x or 1x
I downloaded a long shutter speed app and I can use bulb made to let it run indefinitely. I use the app on my Apple Watch so as not to poke the phone and muck up the photo.
I’m honestly quite surprised that people haven’t noticed this. To take 48MP photos, you need to head into settings and turn on the Apple ProRAW setting which is off by default. If this setting isn’t on, you won’t be able to take 48MP photos. I noticed that he doesn’t have this feature on which affects the outcome completely.
Are the cameras on the 15/16 pro and pro max the same? I’m still on a 12 pro max that I got way back for the sole reason that its camera was better for Astro than the 12 pro.
I've had both a 15 and now a 16. A 15 will give you 90% of what the 16 will do photo-wise. AI-wise the jury's out. The AI stuff hasn't been implemented yet. Up to you whether you want to future proof your phone by investing in the newer one. Apple gave me about $600USD as a trade in on my 15, so you can estimate the 15's savings from that.
I’m assuming due to light pollution I’m just not picking up as many stars as I’d like. Will need to go farther out of town to try again! Please let me know!
In settings you have to turn on HEIC max and turn it on in the top right where yours says RAW max before taking the photo to unlock 48 MP shooting. That allows you to not shoot raw and not have to post process but get a 42 MP useable image straight from pressing the shutter. Otherwise it will be potato quality especially at night.
@@ShayneMostyn it is correct. I do car photography and shoot in HEIF Max and it outputs 48 MP files and when you swipe up in the photos app it shows 48 MP resolution. It even mentions this in the settings app under Camera>Formats. So it does not pixel dump. I just verified this on iOS 18.1 beta 4. The most current.
Somehow the ultra wide on the iPhone 16 pro is worse in low light than previous years Apple really messed something up hopefully it’s a software issue that can be fixed and not a hardware issue
Pixel size doesn't really affect total light gathered... it's the total surface area of the whole sensor that's important. (think of lots of little buckets catching the same amount of water as one big bucket - the whole read noise thing is almost irrelevant on modern BSI sensors)

I’ve just upgraded from an 11 pro, and was quite disappointed to hear various sources complaining that the 48mp ultra wide results in significantly worse low light performance than the 12mp ultra wide on 15 pro :/
E.g. in Fstopper’s review “Iphone 16 pro camera test (major flaws)” he was shocked at how bad the low light photos came out on 16 pro vs 15 pro and 14 pro.
It seems almost as bad as the 11 pro’s ultra wide was. One of the main reasons I was looking forward to the upgrade was to get a much better 0.5x camera, with better low light performance.
I was hoping for this video & here it is!, if I had the money I would as well but the 15 Pro Max has been decent in a backyard setting.
Just processing power I think
In summary, the iPhone 16 Pro can indeed deliver UA-cam-quality 4K HDR video. Its advanced recording capabilities, combined with a high-quality display, make it suitable for both casual users and professionals looking to create high-quality video content it’s the closest I’ve seen to UA-cam 4k hdr so far .
All I can say you’re truly a bloody legend , with the beard on you’re a bloody ultra legend 🦁🏆🥇😎
HAHAHA thanks mate
Can you link me the tripod u use?,
Thank you for reviewing this
Youre welcome
Been waiting for this~
Cheers mate, thanks for watching :)
Thanks
How does the 16 pro or pro max telephoto camera look when taking pictures of the moon and the Milky Way galaxy ?
Thats crazy, the iPhone 11pro was when you and I went to Kow Swamp
Doesn’t turning on ProRaw Max format in the photos using the 1x zoom gives you the full 48mp while not having it on doesn’t give you the highest resolution?
Not for night mode
@@ShayneMostyn yeah sorry I wrote that and then heard you explain in the video hehe
This is amazing
You might want to enable RAW Max setting as well, it should use the entire sensor and give you a more detailed photo
Raw max is enabled. It still pixel bins in night mode
The blue lines on 16and red on 15 are in almost the exact same spot, it really may be just part of pushing the night mode to the very max. Idk I’ve been testing my camera like a crazy person 😅
Maybe the blue light helps somehow better than red did in the 15 with color, lighting etc..?
According to camera settings you can only shoot 12MP with night mode. In order to shoot 48MP it needs to be a standard image with enough light at .5x or 1x
No 48mp in night mode.
Thanks!
Thanks Legend!
Been watching u since the 12 Pro max days!
Thanks legend
can you please suggest me camera settings in iPhone 13PM for astro photography.
my only issue when I had the 15 pro max was newtons rings in some of my night photos >15sec exposure time.
Yeah its bizarre. Ive seen that a few times in the FB group
Thanks. Very interesting. I subscribed happily.
Those are good shots in low light
I’m not sure with this but i saw a review that you need to tap on the RAW MAX to activate the 48mp for the ultra wide mode
he was using the mode where it pixel bins the 48 to a 12mp making it better with light than 48 by itself. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I downloaded a long shutter speed app and I can use bulb made to let it run indefinitely. I use the app on my Apple Watch so as not to poke the phone and muck up the photo.
u r the best man thank you for this video!!
You're welcome!
You cant take 48mp pics in night mode regardless
@@ShayneMostyn didn’t know that :/
Great stuff! How do you get the 30 seconds though? I’m only getting 10?
Put phone on a tripod it automatically knows and switches
has to be on a tripod; has to be raw ; then hit the little V in the center and it should do it; it is a little finicky
@@jacobgerritsenfilms3559 doesn’t need to be raw, Apple magic works in all modes it would seem.
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Are the cameras on the 15/16 pro and pro max the same?
I’m still on a 12 pro max that I got way back for the sole reason that its camera was better for Astro than the 12 pro.
Yes, the UW is now capable of 48mp on the 16. Other than that, the same
I've had both a 15 and now a 16.
I just upgraded from the 14, and I’m eager to get shooting!
Nice mate
I’m assuming due to light pollution I’m just not picking up as many stars as I’d like. Will need to go farther out of town to try again! Please let me know!
Almost certainly light pollutions search my channel for planning Astro shots. It will help you find a location
Thats not right mate. ProRAW max and HEIF Max both will pixel bin down to 12MP in night mode.
@@RyanMonoxide Night Mode is the important part. In good lighting youre absolutely correct. Its the night that pixel bins.
Anyone else having trouble getting 30s to come up even when using a tripod? I’m using the iPhone 16 pro and only 10s would display last night
Somehow the ultra wide on the iPhone 16 pro is worse in low light than previous years Apple really messed something up hopefully it’s a software issue that can be fixed and not a hardware issue
Its Iphone better for this stuff than any android phone?
Been here since I got my 14 pro. I always come to see how the new iPhone’s do with astrophotography since I upgrade every year😭
Gday mate, what brand magsafe mount are you using?
its a Ulanzi one
Ru planning on testing 9 pro?
I wasnt going to. I tend to skip a generation or two of Pixels.
Pixel size doesn't really affect total light gathered... it's the total surface area of the whole sensor that's important.
(think of lots of little buckets catching the same amount of water as one big bucket - the whole read noise thing is almost irrelevant on modern BSI sensors)
That is literally what I said in this video.
Thank - I upgraded from 12. Looking forward to more 16 pro max stuff.
Big difference. Enjoy!
@@ShayneMostyn can’t wait to try. I’d love to see an iPhone 16 moon shot video. The moon is so hard to photograph.
I’ve got an iPhone X…I wnat to upgrade but haven’t yet😂 couldn’t find a 512gb at the store before my trip. Do you think the added storage is worth it or should I be okay with 256
Even a 256 GB phone is a huge amount of storage. My 512GB 15PM reports 22 HOURS of video storage when shooting H.265.
I switched from iPhone X to 16 pro max with 256 Gb it’s plenty for me
