- Universities are complex and intricate workplaces. But how do you gain a contract academic post? This vlog prepares students for contract posts, jumping from the sessional or adjunct academy.
This lady was shining when she was talking. She really showed the passion, inspiration, and care of her job, her students. She set a model here for all academia ppl. The suggestions given in this video and also in others were remarkable and always worth for picking up and redigesting. Thank you for posting it here. This is a precious gift for all of us.
I have a few lecturers who have left beautiful marks on my person... They're the kind of person the world needs more of... They grow beyond lecturer - they become inspirational!!!
Great vlog and advice Tara, thank you. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on online lecturing.
Thank you for starting this series! It came at a perfect time because I'm starting my pedagogy course this week so that I am qualified to lecture in the next academic year.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with us
Very good advice as always. What my huge issue in my first lecturing was, was that I was extremely nervous about not being able to answer ALL the questions that may arise. That gave me extreme anxiety like period. It was horrible. I knew it wouldn’t be that crazy and it wasn’t but the thought of not knowing everything (what is obviously very stupid) was extremely exhausting. I never was like that before but I had extremely huge issues with that. And there was no help whatsoever no one cared. I did it but it almost killed me, seriously and I was always extremely charismatic and extroverted. Just crazy.
Oh sure, and than online came too. So it wasn’t even what I was expecting and needed to learn much more than “just” the lecturing itself that fully broke down my plan for presence lecturing. When I look back it’s extremely fascinating how I managed it, but it seriously put me at high anxiety.
I think this happens to all of us. What I usually do is just say, 'I don't know, but I will look for it' or something politely like that. Next time in the class I will answer this question thoroughly and confidently. I believe it is okay to not know everything. Otherwise, we will be professor already. And even professor will sometimes stuck at some point. I think what really matters is to show your students, you care about your students, you care about their questions. If this still not work, then it is not the problem we can fix in a few days. :) I hope it makes some sense to you.
A very insightful and inspirational vlog Tara! It came out at the right moment for me. I look forward to the next one! Heartfelt wishes from the Netherlands!
Loved this! Thank you! Could you do a video about the transition between Masters studies/thesis writing and PhD studies/dissertation writing? In your experience, do you find that students arrive to a phd program with pre-conceived notions about what to expect or what they’re expected to do? I’d be interested to hear you talk about this, since it’s a huge transition in one’s life. 😊
Thank you so much for the very generous words of wisdom💙
Wow! Very useful video!
Thank you for this one ...
thank u Tara, very helpful vlogs...
Thanks very much, really useful.
Whenever I taught a lecture, I passed out a quick evaluation form. Gave me some data to demonstrate I could teach, without having course evaluations.
