Thank you Tara! I am your big fan from China. I studied Mechanical Engineering in China, and transferred to Engineering Education in the UK. Writing was extremely difficult for me as I had never written professionally in English, I could not pick up the exact vocabulary that fits into the context, neither could I manage my logic flows as I was never trained in a western system about critical writing/ debates. I want to say what you have introduced was so inspiring, I had a lot of reflections on similar experiences, and I had struggles as a foreign learner, too. But now I think I should not 'build the wall' myself, and it must be very rewarding to focus on everyday deliberate practice, develop appreciation for my lifetime professional artwork of writing! Thanksss, love from CHN

Some pertinent advice here but it leaves me wondering why universities don’t offer complete units on academic writing. Surely it is more logical to teach these skills from the outset, especially if the aim of a university education is to transform a student into a professional writer. The current system of handing out little snippets of advice in class and then expecting students to decipher rubrics and craft their work accordingly leaves a lot to be desired.
The content of this video is so valuable I feel it should be expanded into an undergraduate unit suitable for all disciplines. Imagine the time it would save down the track, when PhD supervisors wouldn’t need to waste their time teaching candidates academic writing 101!
