I agree. I don't even mind the change tbh. My real complaint is the political reasoning behind it, and the remake itself. The lack of creativity shown and the hostility to the original are not right.
I do hope she’ll keep her spunky and not “just a tomboy”, she WAS the best player and she was aware she looked good and she made a point not to let anyone downplay her skills or underestimate her, aka “Don’t call me doll”. Honestly her character wasn’t very deep but she was still fun, even if most of her appeal comes from her looks. She did honestly have a personality but it just wasn’t as explored as it could have been. What I got from her character was an attractive character who’s looks stood out more than what she was or what she could do, but a spitfire and a secretly very goofy cartoon who had a skill that pretty much saved her friends. I hope they expand on that, the cool and collective but secretly goofy character trope is probably one of my favorites.
People act like any of these characters were deep lol, Lola having a character altogether that wasn't just '' lol such random '' made her more deep than any of the male characters.
Honestly dude! I really love her character but I don’t get why she has to be a sexy rabbit. And even more so I don’t get why it’s such a big deal when the biggest change is her clothing. That and the style of art which was bound to happen because Looney Toons art style has changed multiple times over the years. She doesn’t need to be sexy to be a good character
Or we could have straight male movie directors not jerk off the also totally straight male audience while we're all trying to watch a movie about freakin' alien cartoon basketball. Can we have female characters who don't have to be "cool"(and sexy) and "so competent" (and sexy) "and responsible"(and sexy) and have traits that are not attractive in any way? Can we have female characters be flawed and stupid and crazy and filthy and loud and ugly and have it be okay the same way it's okay for all the male characters? Like, can female characters be caricatures of some other concept than "wank fodder" and "wank fodder that also does this thing on the side amazingly well to overcompensate for being wank fodder"?
I agree... like, are you saying that girls with larger breasts are inherently more sexual than girls without? Are you saying that girls with wide hips can't be sexual? Are you saying that girls with that figure are physically incapable of being strong? Also, why did Warner have to completely remove her breasts when they could've just covered her up more?
Well he's not wrong how is a redesign gonna affect anyone in their daily life, like he said in his video there's more people making fan art of her and it's pretty much free advertisment.
I loved Lola when I was a kid. I didn't even realize she was "sexy" I was just happy to see a girl being allowed to play with the boys. She was tough, skilled and didn't let people talk down to her. I remember that "don't call me doll" scene WAY different than it apparently was. I haven't seen the movie since then, so I'm sure my memory is wrong. But as a little girl I got the "girl power" aspect and didn't really notice the rest.
right 💀 i loved characters like lola as a little girl. people just don’t understand nuance. you can have a super feminine, bombshell character still be strong.
The problem is that the dialog didn't match with the music and characters' reactions toward her. She tells Bugs not to call her "doll", and Bugs becomes LITERALLY stiff...
"Take that away and what do you get?" An extremely talented athlete that got Michael Jordan's acknowledgment. She put Bugs Bunny, one of the most legendary cartoon characters in history, to shame. Was able to stand up for herself when her buttons are pushed too far. She went toe to toe with 10 foot tall alien monsters without any hesitation. She is the absolute definition of walking the walk.
Seriously she was a pretty strong character. Not extremely deep or anything, but let's be honest none of the looney tunes are that nuanced. So just boiling her down to being sexy and nothing else seems really reductionist.
The issue is, is that most people don't even remember that stuff. Just as Saber put it, when everyone is far more concerned about how sexy she is, they toss out all the other character qualities as though she never had them.
Ok, but the human teeth sonic deserved the hate. He had HUMAN TEETH! This is just bored people with repressed sexuality and anger issues complaining about a character design not being as hot as the porn they remember.
@@pancake_crab4457 I would argue that the new design isn’t appealing because it isn’t unique and is done out of fear and spite of the feminist movement that wants to desexualise every female, all while sexy up male characters (MK11 for example).
The dumb part about all of this is the fact that her and Pepe were dating in that show so they could have EASILY put "Wholesome Pepe" in the movie as a supportive boyfriend who holds down the homestead. BUT NOOOOOOO......
I'm more interested in her character than her appearance. Is she gonna be like Space Jam lola? Looney tunes show lola? A mix of both (I REALLY hope this happens)
The best possible thing they could do is reveal that these two Lolas are the same. LTS Lola is her off the court, SJ Lola is her being 100% focused on basketball. I would LOVE that.
@@psychotophatcat EXACTLY!!! She would have more room to show her character that way! It would be interesting to see both sides of lola and what other characters think of her
I doubt she’ll be in any way the same as Looney Tunes Show Lola. I think she’ll be a mix of Space Jam Lola in that she’ll still be competitive and into basketball but that she’ll also have moments of having a smartass and loony personality similar to Bugs. Just a guess. EDIT: Also, the director changed the design to make her more strong, independent and capable and while Looney Tunes Show Lola is the GOAT, I don’t think they’d choose her personality if they were very invested in those qualities.
Tbh Lola in SJ" didn't have much in character development. She was basically eye candy that played sports when at the time, not a lot of women played sport. Yes women played sports in the 90's but not as much compared today, since sports where considered unattractive for most women, idc about her new design but I hope they make her more integral to the story and don't hammer in the "Girl power" message simply because she's playing basketball with the boys 🙄
I could swear I remember her still being Bugs's cousin in Space Jam, and so I've always been confused about him being depicted as in love with her throughout the movie.
I think I'll wait to see how they handle her character. I do like her old design and character she showed that she could play better than the boys and look good doing it. Now I don't wanna say that them making her less attractive advertently says that they think attractive women can't do sports. But i can see how someone could come to that conclusion. But I'll hold my judgement. But I get that her most recent depictions are very different than in the original space jam. So I guess it dosent even really matter.
People were going to get argue over this whether her design changed or not. Personally I’m fine either way, I hope she is developed more in this movie.
@@bluesolace9052 bunny boobies version was better, I'm not mad at the change, but more like why because they wanted a stronger character, removing the chest has nothing to do with that
@@mW-yp9gn Yeah you’re right if she’s written in a way that doesn’t make her assertive and powerful like the first then I see the change as pointless. Betty Boop might have been “sexualized” as well, but she was the first fictional female President in media which I consider pretty progressive for its time. Idunno sometimes you have to look at the characters actions and their body.
@The Spatza I may be agnostic and not believing in god myself but: 1. That is irrelevant and doesn’t advance the conversation 2. Calling people who are theists delusional does not at all help make your argument more convincing . You say it isn’t for debate shutting down people who disagree. Again this is coming from an agnostic person because I don’t care about if other people believe in god or not. Especially when we’re talking about a cartoon bunny...
I laughed so hard on this review ^^ Well i apprichiate his work over the years. But he is clearly a "Normie" for me.. and i don´t like this word, but it is just how it is. So i agree with you.
when I first saw the picture of the redesign of Lola and people complaining I thought it was about how her face on the poster kinda looked off but alas it was about her chest, which was very disappointing cause I think her redesign still looks nice (other than her face on the poster reminding me of a grandma a bit)
Yeah. XD Nick got extremely Sassy. Honestly I was waiting for a Sass battle between Saber and the comments on the screen. The mirror was a nice jab too. :P
The world was divided because of Donald trump nazi American party and his Great grandfather was German and his father was rich man and Klansman as well.
My opinion: if Lola isn't sexualized and has a more developed personality, the design doesn't matter Edit: I meant that the design shouldn't define her character in that way. Just because she is sexy doesn't mean she *has* to be the sexualized bunny that she was in the first movie. And the design shouldn't be totally de-sexualizezed Just so she can have a different personality. I know that visuals are important in design, specially its correlation to the character's personality. Edit2: I try to reply to people but my UA-cam app is acting like a brat
She is sexualized, which isn't a bad thing nor does it diminish her personality, and you can simply explore that cannon's version of lola and her personality more. And designs in art ALWAYS matter. Why animate it at all if visuals don't mater?? Why does how sexy she is have to affect how high quality her personality can be?
I ain't no furry, but I can't say you're wrong because it's like the teen titans reboot. They completely remade her character, there's barely a hinr of concentration in the looney toons show, just like degeneration. And warner literally decided to make a sexual scene with bugs and lola.
@@Shipprofile08 the point of her character in the movie IS that people usually reduce her to her looks on sight so they tend to be shock when she can do something other than look pretty. *It's literally her opening scene.* Plenty of the people who are objectifying and putting her down over her looks are the ones who are the ones complaining about her original design. And your argument is like saying that a good character that's supposed to seem evil having an evil design doesn't compliment them because you'd like them to be more heroic. No, you just have a bias against characters that look like that thus falling for the guise. That not bad character design, that's giving their design a deeper message. So personally I'd say they did an AMAZING job designing her given how that's all anyone ever does is reduce her character to her looks despite her other talents. Because again the point IS that people boil her down to her looks despite her skills and personality, because people tend to objectify women. So much in fact that people think sexy women are just props and only "less sexually attractive" women can have personalities. Hence "less sexy lola means better personality because I find her boobs distracting" being the main argument against her. So yeah, main issue here is actually just sexism. Women being talented doesn't inherently clash with them be attractive.
Honestly, I didn’t really care. But the one thing that made me kind of not like the redesign is the directors reason for changing it. He said he wanted to make the character more of a strong character which is great but how does decreasing the size of her breasts that weren’t that over the top in the first place make her a stronger character? They should have instead kept something a bit more like the original and just changed up her clothing and writing.
He said he wanted to make her design "stronger," because its generic PR speak. Warner Brothers didn't want to say "Her old designed was oversexualized in a sort of gross way and in the 90s nobody cared but now a lot of people would be less cool with it," so they used a boilerplate adjective to try to minimize the controversy. It failed, but that was inevitable given how certain people literally make their entire living getting angry about changes in society now.
@@SanguineQuest I don't think she was over sexualized at all. In fact, I think she was more athletic than sexy. I would have to completely disagree with you on that.
@@tridenttitan5329 I don't really think its reasonable to classify the design as "more athletic than sexy," when they went out of their way to give her a bare midriff and ultra-short-shorts that show off her long slender legs, which is nothing like what the WNBA players were wearing in the 90s. I don't object to them having made her sexy at the time, the intent behind it was pretty clearly not malicious and it was entirely in-line with how media tended to portray empowered women at the time. Very rooted in 2nd Wave Feminism and the Sexual Revolution circa the 70s (although arguably mainly from a male perspective). But lets be honest about what was going on there. There's nothing wrong with being critical of outcomes even when intentions are good, especially because even the writers own notes make it clear they were making this character mainly to be Bugs' girlfriend, not just to have an attractive, athletic, empowered lady among the Looney Tunes cast for the sake of having her.
I don’t mind the new design. I like that Lola is dressed like a professional basketball player and not a dancer at a halftime show. My only complaint is that her face too closely resembles Slappy Squirrel from Animaniacs.
Fun fact: there's fan art about jessica being ace because while she's sexualized and aware of it, she doesn't seem to be too interested in it outside of the fact that her job requires iher to have sex appeal, as well as the line "I'm not bad, I'm just drawn that way"
@@Niskara TBH, he has some rapey vibes to that cat by not giving some space when she shows obvious rejection. Even then, they could easily rework with Pepe instead of completely removing him. Like make him into a womanizer, a guy who's really passionate on love, and respect people's boundary. There are other options outside of removing one of the more prominent Loony Toon.
I was only upset by the change because of the way it was handled. The creators didn’t want Lola to be sexualized. So, that implies that curves = sexualization? Sexualization ISN’T solely based on body shape! Clothing, poses, and facial expressions also are taken into account. It’s like the conundrum of “girls get molested when they wear skimpy clothing”, which is absolutely wrong. Rather than changing her purely because of sexualization, change her because you want to focus on her as a character. I’m fine with her not having a chest, but 100% don’t make it about the sexualization. Make the change so you can focus on her character, not her body.
Okay guys yes half the reason he changed her was because she was sexaulized the other was because he thought it was weird for a bunny to look like that
I honestly believe that the whole Lola controversy is just to distract people from seeing what a total clusterfurry Space Jam: A New Legacy is going to be. BTW, speaking of animation that were meant to be a joke between the animators, Foodfight! had something similar happened but it actually made it into the movie when it wasn't supposed to. Speaking of Foodfight!, will you a vid on that one? It's such a fascinating trainwreck in so many ways.
Or it could be a distraction just to get people to know the movie exists, while they make another design. A combination of Mighty No 9 commercials and the Sonic movie redesign.
Technically there’s an entire body shape change, which alters the whole design. Keep in mind, character design is used to convey a character’s personality, backstory, and purpose.
I didn't think about this at all since I haven't heard much about this controversy, wow. She was hilarious in that show , I'd be all of this movie if they did that.
I’m actually hoping they keep her quirk of disliking being called ‘doll’ because that dislike of being objectified could translate well if the writing was smart..

The PR team is full of idiots for not explaining it as she is a basketball player, she is wearing a sports bras DUH. That would have been a real pro woman move since so many pro athletes are mocked for looking manly when it's because they don't want their boobs bouncing painfully around while they are trying to work. Lola can still have the same body, everyone is happy, and it makes sense.
You're not allowed to use logic on the internet 😏 Sadly, PR in Hollywood seems to have only one card to play - identity politics. They'll accuse anyone who criticizes them of being a bigot. All they achieve is polarizing the audience and alienating a portion of it. The strategy works very well in the short term, but is disastrous in the long term.
I will say: who wouldn't know iof sports bras and what they are used for? I can imagine you'll have some not realize she could wear that and end up going "REEEE SJW." That said, even with the bra, I can imagine she doesn't really have big breast like everyone thinks because that one image used to compare to the redesign was just someone's photoshop fan art. Lola doesn't even have large breast so how exactly can she be sexualized like the director claimed besides fan art? *edited so my comment doesn't sound like dumb shit. It was referring to people that wouldn't know the rabbit could wear a sports bra.
Funny how in practicality you can have both: Cuz sport bra, ever heard of it? And how certain clothes change your siluette. Im in for a Lola that just likes changing her outfits from comfy to sexy to anything she likes really. Cuz...yeah, women are allowed to dress however they like!
We can just imagine that now she’s wearing a sports bra, while in the first movie she was wearing a push-up bra. I like the change in the uniform. As a female that loves high-waisted shorts and crop tops and that have already played in a basketball team I can assure you that I would NOT have chosen those pieces to play basketball. We just wear regular uniforms. The only thing that bothers me is that it seems like she’s... shorter? Maybe it’s the new clothes giving an illusion (which is normal). If she’s +- the same height as Bugs, I’m fine. It’s still the same character, but with a proper uniform and sports bra. (They hide curves, but that doesn’t mean they are not there).
I don't think she'd even need a sports bra now lol. She never wore a push up bra in the movie either, she really wasn't very well-endowed at all. The art people used to compare was fanart, in the movie her breasts are not even very big.
@@somethinganderssen7200 indeed in the original her breasts are not big, they just “existed”. Right now she looks completely flat. The bra thing is just a headcanon though, like... If you have small-medium breasts and wear a push-up bra, with a tight fitted crop top, they’ll look bigger, but if you wear a sports bra with a loose shirt, you’ll look flat. 🤷🏼♀️
The problem is the guy behind the scenes of why the change happened that basically boils down to ''Yeah you know female characters can't be both strong aswell as smart and good looking'' Which when combined that to other similar more extreme cases of this happening for years now is what got people up in arms over this change also people hadn't cared much about the rework of Lola Bunny in the looney toons show as as far as my self and several I have talked to are aware the rework in the Looney Tunes show hadn't had any such sort of statement made on why she was reworked for it
That´s why I loved the comments of Patty Jenkins when doing the original PR for the first Wonder Woman movie. She said that she used to play as the character as a child and that there was nothing wrong about being strong, kick ass and looking like Lynda Carter while doing so.
I wanna say that’s because her looney toons show design wasn’t that bad and fit the overall look of the show. Only thing I can actually remember not like was her personality because she went from confident to complete doof and not the fun kind the annoying kind that will some how manage to trip and bring down the whole house.

As someone that is huge on character design i want her original appearance. As a little girl i loved everything about her. This design is cute but doesn't give me the same power the original did. Her new one looks to much like Babs Bunny and im starting to wonder if this design will be implemented in the Tiny Toons reboot so Babs gets her personal role model.

Babs personal role model was made to be Honey from Bosco and Honey. Though honestly Babs role model is Bugs from the time he was always putting on a disguise or cross dressing to thwart his foe. There's like different versions of Bugs, the calm, cool and relaxed one who Buster seems to take after. And the more Looney version who Babs takes after.
Personally what bothered me is the fact that the director basically said “women can’t have curves to be a strong female” to your point with Jessica Rabbit, I want to see more full figured confident women or even Looney toons Lola. As full figured women I hate constantly being told I should be ashamed by my body an chest no matter how much or little I wear. I will say I adore the jerseys they made for the toon squad
Saying strong women can't have curviness is just wrong. Strong female characters can come in many shapes & sizes. Look at Black Widow, she's an all around independent strategic badass.
That's what I was saying when they got rid of miss bellum in the PPG reboot, I mean people made points about the sexy secretary stereotype/trope, but you could have easily just have her move to a different job or even become the new mayor herself. Not that that show isn't a trainwreck for many other reasons.

Not to mention that image of Lola every one is pissed about ISNT EVEN THE DESIGN USED IN THE FILM ITSELF!!! It's just a promotional image and looks nothing like the Lola in the film.
I think it’s the proportions, her legs are more ‘cartoony’ for lack of a better word. It looks less structured, going for a more simple and spongeBob style.
@@starstudiosofficial4460 yeah but the that show had an entirely different aesthetic so it looked fine. here they are trying to mimic the original style and it just doesn't look right. Again though, still doesn't matter because the image everyone is upset about isn't even her design in the film itself.
I really don't care about the redesign itself, just mildly disappointed. The Director's reason for it is what made me upset. He basically said Lola didn't represent strong women with her looks, despite the fact she was the best player other than Michael Jordan himself. I just can't support that kind of thinking of you can't be hot and be strong at the same time
@UCX4nsWBYnkuTsuC46WKsOsA I don't agree with that sentiment at all. It's still more sexist considering most people just liked Lola for being strong without rubbing it in your face how strong she is. When you dumb her down just because "she doesn't look like a strong woman" that sounds more blatantly sexist and degrading to women who do look attractive.
@@yuuhyakuya3863 on top of the fact that the new redesign doesn't make her look strong at all either. if anything she was more fit in the original design, while now she looks like a couch potato, has 0 toned muscle etc. hell, her face looks like slappy the squirrels. her cheeks are actually bigger compared to all of her older designs.
Ikr, but i get where they are coming from. Lola's character was a strong woman in the first movie. But what most people got from that is "omg she's so hot and sexy". Thats it, thats why most of her character is seen as useless in space jam.
You did forget to mention the interview where they said that new design is suppose to show her as strong female character, implying that her previous desgin wasn't showing her to be a strong female character even though she was by far the best player on the team next to Jordan.
The only thing I don't like about the new design is the face. Other than that, it's fine. The big issue is I feel this movie is like 20+ years too late.
As a young girl, what I liked about original Lola was her confidence and the skills to back it up. When I was young I felt nervous about having female attention or standing out because it would lead to said female attention and it felt like it was my fault or sometimes everything being out of control. But here's this character who doesn't mind being feminine and can keep up with the boys and not care about the attention brought on to her or her appearance, she still did what she wanted to do and wear what she wanted to wear without breaking a sweat. I'm still nervous to this day expressing my body, ashamed even but characters like her helped me to find my own style and confidence. So while I don't think the redesign is bad, her lack of expression with her clothes and posture makes me worried for her character's personality in the future movie and I am also sad in general that people just consider her a sexy character when she was so inspiring for little me. I just think she was a pretty positive character for insecure girls, or at least like me, can't speak for anyone but myself honestly.
Agree, I'm a female and I'm tired of this new trend of butchering the female traits of characters, they are basically saying "if you have a curvy body you can't be strong and independent" , so now the designs go in two ways they are like a 12 year old boys or have severe masculine traits this is very obvious in the last couple of years in comic book, the best example is the re-design of She-Hulk the original design is like a female body builder wit curves , but now in her 2021 version they took ALL her femenine side, to make her look like a 100% testosterone giant like Goro from Mortal Kombat but wit only two arms and green skin, so what they are saying is that "feminine traits are weak, you must have a steroid filled masculine body to compete wit men"
The part about that promo image of the redesign is that her feet indicate she's standing behind the human, but her upper part is in front of his pant legs. That's some M.C. Escher stuff right there.
I’m a woman and something about the redesign is just unappealing to me. I think mainly the face and outfit. She doesn’t need to be sexy but idk, I wish she was cuter. It’s like they put in so much effort to make her *not* sexy when I feel they could have done a middle ground
Same. I'm not upset, I just think they did her so dirty with that face redesign. After all, she is a bunny, and she looks like an old lady. Maybe it's the way she looks in that particular image, we'll have to wait & see.
@@moonlight_mylk exactly my thoughts!! She looks older. It’s not that I care per se, it’s just my two cents as someone who is interested in character design. The boob talk is ridiculous. A bunny doesn’t need boobs. But the design is still not great imo
Looking at the redesign, the only issue I could probably take away is that maybe she blends in a little too much with the others. Compare that to her design in the first movie where she clearly stood out. I would be more bothered by that than anything, but I don't really have any stake in the character. If no one complained about the redesign, I doubt I would even notice the change all that much.
one interesting argument i’ve seen is that by making lola less “sexy” by making her less curvy suggests that there is something inherently sexual about a curvy woman. that is not the case- women with big boobs shouldn’t be seen as sex objects simply because of their boobs, and women with small boobs shouldn’t be seen as less sexy/not sexy due to their lack of boobs. That being said, rabbits don’t have boobs. I like both designs anyway. edit: people r being genuinely salty in the comments i guess this is what i get for commenting on a yt video :/
Funny thing is the guy in charge of Space Jam 2 is who actually stated that in the first place that curves and breasts are sexual .. Mainly others are basically using his logic of'' Female characters can't be strong and good looking'' against him as woman can be both.. I personally never seen her design as sexual but I use the argument he made in reverse as its true woman can be good looking and strong and smart at the same time
Honestly I don’t care about her “redesign” (I don’t even call it that compared to her Loony Tune Show counterpart) and she doesn’t even look that different. She’s still “sexy” to me and screw every TV show that doesn’t think female characters can be sexy and strong at the same time.
ROCKADIUS Wanna know what else is boring? TV changing or straight up “canceling” female characters simply for being sexy. At that point what’s more sexist: the character or the writer who removed the character?
@@RosheenQuynh Although I kinda understand people being disappointed because she wasn't this design from the start unlike the other characters (her face looks sorta uglier than before too imo). 7:16 this is an eerie parallel to how Rouge the bat was introduced into sonic adventure 2. She too was a joke sketch that one of the artists kept as part of his personal collection of sketches that was "MiSTaKeNLY" turned in as a usable final character model for the game.
I don't care much for the change, the only thing that does bug me is the shape of her head of all things I can't explain it precisely, but I'm not a fan of the face proportions of her new design, it's more exagerated but isn't quite enough to be as cartoony as Buggs and work for me, some uncanny inbetween
I think the ratio is off between her lower face and upper face. Like her cheeks are too big and eyes are too small. It's just a little off-looking to me. I don't mind the rest of her design though.
The main thing is what authors said about this redesign, that they redesigned her to be more strong and independent, a.k.a. de-sexualized = strong and independent, which is complete BS
I would wager this is what is fueling most of the outrage. It isn't that they want Lola Bunny to be sexy or that she has to be because they're horny, but because it reeks of cynicism.
Shes strong and independent cause of how sexualized women are in animation. They "desexualized" her for her to stand out more and made her seem more natural by actually giving her a real proper uniform instead of keeping her in a freaking crop top and booty shorts, shes one of the few so far that are portraying how women actually are
Honestly, my only issue with Lola's appearance on the poster is that her face looks like Slappy Squirrel cosplaying Lola Bunny. From what little I saw in the trailer, she looks okay there.
The reason I don’t like the change is because it pushes the whole idea of “if you’re sexy you can’t be anything else” your example of Jessica rabbit was perfect. Jessica was smart and witty and talented she had a character and wasn’t just a sex object even if she was sexy. The fact that the designers think that to make Lola anything is that they had to remove anything that is sexual is the opposite. If she’s hot she can’t be a good character. That’s what the new design tells me.
@@kami_dred7319 Not sure exactly what the OG Lola was "inappropriate" about? I was a kid watching Space Jam and I never found anything wrong with her, like tell me exactly what was wrong with OG Lola here?? People defending the new Lola design and shaming the OG Lola sounds a lot like religious parents to me.
the only thing that i immediately noticed in the redesign is that her face looks less like a bunny and now looks like Slappy Squirrel! (Which honestly, I miss Slappy! So that's a good thing)
I'm sure it's been said to death at this point, but I think the main issue is how a lot of media feel the need to remove qualities women have (such as a bigger chest) as if it was the main points that were holding Lola back from being a strong female character. If anything I think the main problem is how the characters all gawked, the sexy suggestive music, and hinting factors such as that! Like when it was pointed out about how faming the character tells a lot... It wasn't Lola's outfit or figure that needed changing, it was the way she was viewed by characters around her or the camera/movie itself!
You know what’s funny, the picture they were sending around was a fan art, not from the actual movie. So they compared the actual design from the sequel with a fan art that clearly was... updated.
Just wanted to say that I loved the little moments with the editor here. Love it when the editor gets to show some personality, and it was genuinely funny to me. Could get a really nice back and forth between you two.
I don't see why they couldn't leave her body the same but put an actual basketball uniform on her, it is the same "series" after all. She can be the "hot girl" but still be the intimidating, not to be underestimated player. It upsets me more that she was redesigned in the sequel to the one with the original design. The designs in other shows don't have this problem because it is its own show with its own versions of characters, they aren't necessarily the same person as the other versions of themselves. She can be smart, hot, a good basketball player, and hate being looked down on at the same time is what I'm getting at.
I'll never forget seeing Noel Vermillion shout that in Blazblue before a battle. Dunno if that was in the original or if the localizers added it but either way I thought it was a cute reference, lol.
@@jillandjack7631 seems like you’ve missed out on some great characters: Gwen Tennyson, Princess bubblegum, marceline, daria, sandy cheeks, katara, toph, terra from teen titans, shera, etc. If you want me to share more references I can
My only issue is, I liked that she was this cute, “sexy” bunny because Buggs was sexiest towards her and so were other guys and she didn’t take their shit. She was (other then Jordan) the only one who had skill on the court and when called ‘doll’ or anything else sexual, she got mad and kicked ass. She was the ONLY girl on the team, so (for me) she stood out. She was skilled, she was ‘sexy’ and she didn’t really take crap from anyone. Now she kinda blends in... Saying that, I didn’t mind the promotional version of her you showed. Curvy but a little less “sexy” I just hope her character is still either the same or better... and not watered down..
Yeah I think it's kind of a disfavor to reduce her to just Bugs's GF when she took no shit and kicked ass on the field. Maybe they could have her be like Loony Tunes Show Lola off the court but when she has to get serious she goes ultra instinct mode and kinda snaps into Space Jam Lola mode
Tbh Lola bunny design was never sexual it was the atmosphere that made it sexual the way everyone acted and background music its not that design tbh its how they portrayed it
I didn’t grew up with Space jams Lola. I grew up with the looney tunes version of Lola. I love her personality so much and it’s such a shame a lot of people loves Lola for her looks only.
That goes both ways though. They think changing how she looks will fix the lack of depth like sexy and personality can't coexist. Personally, I just view them as different versions. Like different comic book universes, they're different just versions of the same characters. She did have a personality, just not a deep one. Ironically the point of character WAS that sexy women are good for than just their looks! And EVERYONE has forgotten that.
@@Gingersnaps_the_pumpkin_kitty in a visual media, what is shown usually sticks more than what is said. People can say as much as they want that Lola had some personality, but they remember what they saw, which was a sexy bunny. It is the same thing mentioned in the video from Lindsay Elis about Megan Fox’ character in transformers. She might have been a deeper character than the MC and complain how people desconsidere her knowledge on a mostly masculine field and view her as an object, while at the same time the camera is ogling at her curves when she is looking at the car. People do not remember her comment or the critique underneath it, they only remeber what the camera showed them: that yes, she is a sexy object and that is her only worth. In the visual media, camera/vision supeseds text always.
Or maybe her personality just isn't what appeals to some people who can still appreciate something about her. There is nothing sad about that, we all have different preferences.
I liked Lola's character design from the original Space Jam, but DEAR GOD did I hate her actual character, even as a lad of 11 which is what I was in 1996. I didn't know the right term back then, but I recognize it as CRINGE now. Lola was a perfect example of what you'd call "men writing women," I think they were going for some kind of empowered female thing, like how she hates it when people objectify her and wants to be recognized for her actual skill and ability...except her every line and action is totally seductive, she's a shameless tease. It's kind of like they wanted to put Minerva Mink into the movie without actually putting Minerva Mink in the movie. It makes her come across as shameless and hypocritical and even THEN her major arc is coming out as Bugs' girlfriend, so she has no real agency or character of her own aside from the man she's with. I LOVED her in the Looney Toons show though, she was frikking hilarious and I laughed out loud at almost every scene she was in, on another note they also introduced Daffy's girlfriend Tina in that show who was almost her total opposite yet every bit as funny, I still think fondly about that cartoon after all this time. This made me think about other female characters in WB canon, and aside from one shots I could only think of Granny and Broomhilda, MAYBE Red Hot Riding Hood since she was in 2 shorts instead of just one. OF course the 90's gave us a bunch of new ones like Babs, Sherly, Fifi and a couple others from Tiny Toons and Dot, Hello Nurse, Slappy Squirrel and Minerva Mink from animaniacs, but they never crossed over outside of their own franchise like the other Looney Toons characters do.
Bet if someone turned her from Space Jam 1 into a demon slayer because of people like her critics foaming at the mouth to pick her character apart at every turn wanting her in hell, then we'll see.
Personally I don't care about it if their focus are children but the fact that the director said that they needed strong female characters is really sexist because he's literally saying that a girl with great body can't be a strong female character.
I'm pretty sure that he just said that so that he could seem progressive, we all know it's so that parents won't get upset at a sexaul bunny in thier kids moive
YES! That’s the only reason I don’t like the new design. Her face is so....chonk. I’m hoping she’ll look better animated but I’m not watching the movie either way
The thing that bothers me about Lola's new redesign, her face doesn't match the rest of her, its like her torso is more tomboyish and her face is makeup, i get that there are other girls that has flat chests and still wear make up but her new design doesn't fit right to me, i guess make the eyeshadow more light or make her eyes less sleepy, idk. Thats my opinion about it and i dont want to talk about this situation more because it doesnt really matter to me.
While I easily see your point of view and agree with alot of it in this vid, there's a little more nuance to the backlash of her change. On the surface you see people angry purely because the attractiveness is gone. But that's not everyone. For me and quite a few others, it's the reasoning behind the change, and I wish you would've pointed that out. They said that they wanted Lola to be a "strong" character, and that having her attractive would take away from this. That's the main problem here. Recently this sort of reasoning has been growing more and more abundant in Western media; especially in comic books. Characters like Wonder Woman, She-Hulk, or Starfire - all incredibly powerful yet attractive women - have been either heavily sidelined or transformed into less appealing versions of themselves for no apparent reason. Lola, while being clearly eye candy, was also part of that "powerful yet attractive" circle. You're totally correct in that they didn't give her enough personality; or more times to show off said personality. But what they did give was enough for many of us to look up to her as a role model. Her first act was to quite literally establish dominance over Bugs, who belittled her because she was attractive. That spoke to many of us; even as children. This cute, attractive female bunny easily beating the "star of Looney Toons" in a one-on-one? This girl destroying this guy who just belittled her in basketball - a typically very male sport? This sportsball-playing woman even impressing Michael freakin' Jordan? Instantly, that made her my favorite character, and it had little to do with her attractiveness. "So why does the redesign bother you?" Because of what I stated earlier - the reason behind it. Why is it that nowadays being attractive suddenly means you can't be strong? Look at Jessica Rabbit, for instance. Ultra attractive character but has tons of personality and is heavily pivotal to the movie she was in. Do you really, truly think she could exist in this day and age the same exact way as she was back then? No; at least not in the mainstream media. Twitter would explode. Literally explode. If she were to come back, she'd be heavily redrawn and dumbed down because nowadays, being "attractive" means you're weak-willed and a bimbo in the Western world. That's what we're told every single time a once attractive character with a strong will gets watered down, and Lola is just the most recent. It all feels like pandering to people who wouldn't watch the movie in the first place... Also, I should add: The removal of Pepe Le Pew from the movie. If that's not pandering, I don't know what is. However that's a whole other Pandora's Box that I won't be opening here. As for her television series version - I actually adore that version of Lola myself too. Her personality fits "Looney Toons" perfectly. But my goodness, even that version allowed her to have at least some feminine attractiveness, while this new Space Jam version has removed all of it. Which brings me to the next reason behind my personal annoyance... The redesign itself...is not good. It's not even that she isn't "attractive". It's just not good at all. Remember how you pointed out the initial versions of Lola looked too much like Bugs and so they had to redesign her? Welp, now she looks exactly like a female Bugs Bunny only with Slappy the Squirrel's (from Animaniacs) face. This wasn't an update in design. This was a downgrade in every way. Anyways that's my thoughts on it, and I'm personally done arguing about it so this'll probably be my final post on the matter. If you actually read all of this, thank you for taking your time in doing so. At the end of the day this is just my opinion and my thoughts on the subject. If yours is different, then that's your prerogative.
Thanks for basically summing up all my feelings on this subject. Yet another strong, attractive, female character dumbed down for "reasons" that really only boil down to "Pretty bad, ugly good"
Thankyou for pointing this out. I think it was a net loss for the video to not address this, because this change did not happen in a vacum. If memory serves , this was basicly the same reason given for axing Ms. Bellum from the new Powerpuff Girls and I remember the criticism of that was taken more seriuosly.
@@ATFADL I was pondering actually pointing out Ms. Bellum in my post, but felt it was already extremely long to begin with. She was most definitely also a victim (then again Powerpuff Girls as a whole was imo ruined with its "reboot". That one dude that self-inserted himself as Blossom's love interest? good lord...)
It bothered me that he never talked about the why the redesign was "justified" and how that comes off to women. Only thing saber said was he was a guy so he may be missing something... He didn't just miss it he flat out ignored it
@@soulechelon2643 And you know what’s even more egregious? Ms. Bellum actually makes a cameo in one of the episodes, AND SHE HAS THE EXACT SAME APPEARANCE. Cleavage and everything. Yet they go and practically give Ms. Keane a mastectomy for having boobage. Despite them being present in the original design just for added detail and show no signs of over sexualization.
I don’t think your giving OG Lola enough credit. Like Jessica Rabbit, her looks are meant to contrast her character. She’s pretty, and that sets up the expectation that she’s just gonna be the hot but vapid member of the group who only gets added to the team because she’s attactive. But she is also capable, more so than any of the other tunes in the movie, she has the skills to be on the team and also doesn’t like it when people see her as just a pretty face. I can’t speak for everyone else’s reasons for liking her, and Lola isn’t super deep nor is she central to the movie, but there is intent behind her design and character beyond just being the hot one.
Lola really didn't have that much to her tho. Like yeah she was more than a pretty face but that was about it. We don't really no why she's into basketball, why she's so skilled, etc, etc.

I loved Lola when I was a kid. I didn't even realize she was "sexy" I was just happy to see a girl being allowed to play with the boys.
She was tough, skilled and didn't let people talk down to her. I remember that "don't call me doll" scene WAY different than it apparently was. I haven't seen the movie since then, so I'm sure my memory is wrong. But as a little girl I got the "girl power" aspect and didn't really notice the rest.
Yeah. Lola was like the iconic tomboy of my childhood. She was feminine, but can still kick ass with the boys.
I agree. I don't know if she was intended to appeal to young girls, but I thought she was cool for the same reason.
right 💀 i loved characters like lola as a little girl. people just don’t understand nuance. you can have a super feminine, bombshell character still be strong.
The problem is that the dialog didn't match with the music and characters' reactions toward her. She tells Bugs not to call her "doll", and Bugs becomes LITERALLY stiff...
even if she was always sexy, she has her boundaries really well put.
"Take that away and what do you get?"
An extremely talented athlete that got Michael Jordan's acknowledgment.
So just boiling her down to being sexy and nothing else seems really reductionist.
not much.
The issue is, is that most people don't even remember that stuff. Just as Saber put it, when everyone is far more concerned about how sexy she is, they toss out all the other character qualities as though she never had them.

I doubt she’ll be in any way the same as Looney Tunes Show Lola. My opinion: if Lola isn't sexualized and has a more developed personality, the design doesn't matter
Edit: I meant that the design shouldn't define her character in that way.
Visual are important to represent character personality. The most important
@juhuy I agree with you. Looks are important, but they should compliment the character's personality instead of being the main focus for the audiance!
*It's literally her opening scene.*
Plenty of the people who are objectifying and putting her down over her looks are the ones who are the ones complaining about her original design.
I agree directly with you
I agree completely, however I think the idea of a Space Jam 2 is pointless in general.

Her face style/shape reminds me of Slappy the Squirrel
Kinda funny because in the first one she looks like sid from ice age with how far apart her eyes are
I was only upset by the change because of the way it was handled.
I think she still has a curvy body. It is her new clothing that covered her shape.
Serialization also isn't inherently bad NOR does it cause personality problems or deficiencies.
Fair fair. It's more or less the reason that's it
Okay guys yes half the reason he changed her was because she was sexaulized the other was because he thought it was weird for a bunny to look like that

Or it could be a distraction just to get people to know the movie exists, while they make another design.

Lola can still have the same body, everyone is happy, and it makes sense.
You're not allowed to use logic on the internet 😏
Sadly, PR in Hollywood seems to have only one card to play - identity politics. They'll accuse anyone who criticizes them of being a bigot. All they achieve is polarizing the audience and alienating a portion of it. The strategy works very well in the short term, but is disastrous in the long term.

The problem is the guy behind the scenes of why the change happened that basically boils down to ''Yeah you know female characters can't be both strong aswell as smart and good looking'' Which when combined that to other similar more extreme cases of this happening for years now is what got people up in arms over this change also people hadn't cared much about the rework of Lola Bunny in the looney toons show as as far as my self and several I have talked to are aware the rework in the Looney Tunes show hadn't had any such sort of statement made on why she was reworked for it
i didn't care how she look i only care about her personally
That´s why I loved the comments of Patty Jenkins when doing the original PR for the first Wonder Woman movie. She said that she used to play as the character as a child and that there was nothing wrong about being strong, kick ass and looking like Lynda Carter while doing so.
I wanna say that’s because her looney toons show design wasn’t that bad and fit the overall look of the show. Her new one looks to much like Babs Bunny and im starting to wonder if this design will be implemented in the Tiny Toons reboot so Babs gets her personal role model.
Yeah i agree, its just not the same.
Let’s see how the character moves. Sometimes a character in motion gives off a different feeling than a still image.
@@GreebleClown Yes move movement is key.

@UCX4nsWBYnkuTsuC46WKsOsA I don't agree with that sentiment at all. It's still more sexist considering most people just liked Lola for being strong without rubbing it in your face how strong she is. And with the wrong athlete lol

@@gypsypie7124 And that’s fair. I only speak of what young me saw her as.
Agree, I'm a female and I'm tired of this new trend of butchering the female traits of characters, they are basically saying "if you have a curvy body you can't be strong and independent" , so now the designs go in two ways they are like a 12 year old boys or have severe masculine traits this is very obvious in the last couple of years in comic book, the best example is the re-design of She-Hulk the original design is like a female body builder wit curves , but now in her 2021 version they took ALL her femenine side, to make her look like a 100% testosterone giant like Goro from Mortal Kombat but wit only two arms and green skin, so what they are saying is that "feminine traits are weak, you must have a steroid filled masculine body to compete wit men"

one interesting argument i’ve seen is that by making lola less “sexy” by making her less curvy suggests that there is something inherently sexual about a curvy woman. that is not the case- women with big boobs shouldn’t be seen as sex objects simply because of their boobs, and women with small boobs shouldn’t be seen as less sexy/not sexy due to their lack of boobs. That being said, rabbits don’t have boobs. I like both designs anyway.

@@victoriapeay3019 but cant you easily flip it the other way around like theres nothing wrong with a character with no sex appeal?
@@enzomottacodeco7795 It’s the best animated movie ever!
the only thing that i immediately noticed in the redesign is that her face looks less like a bunny and now looks like Slappy Squirrel!
You explained it better than anyone else.
You know what’s funny, the picture they were sending around was a fan art, not from the actual movie. So they compared the actual design from the sequel with a fan art that clearly was... updated.
Yeah, people seem to have forgotten what she really looked like.
I don't think it looks that different though.
They're just using her updated look for the movie that's it why are people so angry her design has changed over the years
All I truly care about is if she thrashes almost everyone else on the court.

@The Spatza Does...does that have anything to do with a cartoon rabbit who plays basketball?
Agree I hate new design
The biggest notable redesign is basically a breast reduction. Perhaps the designers are appealing to the "flat is justice" crowd.
DFC is good for me 😎👌🏻
I have a flat chest so im just glad there’s finally a female character with a flatter chest in a movie:(
I'll never forget seeing Noel Vermillion shout that in Blazblue before a battle.

As a B cup, I'm always here for it!
Curvy but a little less “sexy”
I just hope her character is still either the same or better... and not watered down..
Nah, they made her a nerd
There was another women on the team but she was old lol
@@leledallas317 Granny doesn’t count! Lol she didn’t actually play lol
I'm sure she wasn't the only female on the team
I love the Mark-Lixian vibe we get from Spark and Nick, we need a raise for him for searching up that website
Tbh Lola bunny design was never sexual it was the atmosphere that made it sexual the way everyone acted and background music its not that design tbh its how they portrayed it
True
I didn’t grew up with Space jams Lola. I grew up with the looney tunes version of Lola. I love her personality so much and it’s such a shame a lot of people loves Lola for her looks only.
As a gay person I love Lola bunny so much and I would love to cosplay her someday
She’s stylish and funny

Same here. And this isn't the only times its happened either
Ah no what hell are talking about

I'm pretty sure that he just said that so that he could seem progressive, we all know it's so that parents won't get upset at a sexaul bunny in thier kids moive
@@Jenna-in4br It's not parents who "care" and get upset.
I think she's still pretty cute, people really do need to chill.
Ngl the cheeks on the Lola redesign reminds me of that “melon-shaped head” character from El Arca de Noe.
Y'mean Bruma? Yeah the top of her head being smaller than the cheeks, that bothers me too.
@@SwiftNimblefoot Yeah her. At least she was killed off early in the movie so we didn't have to worry about her weird face.
Oh yeah! I knew something was familiar with that head shape
YES! That’s the only reason I don’t like the new design. Her face is so....chonk. I’m hoping she’ll look better animated but I’m not watching the movie either way
For the 100th time: I'm not a furry in denial! I'm just a furry!

I think part of the issue is her cheeks are way too wide
I totally agree. Actually, when you look at the video trailer, she doesn't have that problem. It's just that promo design that's weird.
@The Spatza You need help
She's the femme fatale. I don't think it's that deep.
Yeah I see that point. I never really compared her to Jessica rabbit until now. Interesting.
Lola really didn't have that much to her tho.
Like yeah she was more than a pretty face but that was about it.
We don't really no why she's into basketball, why she's so skilled, etc, etc.
But she is vapid. That's the point of her. Have you seen the movie.
