"The people who succeed typically know to not do what other people did that failed." Absolute gold, should be on a poster in classrooms.
...or in the halls of Congress!
@@lesnyk255 But then they could not try the same recipees that failed for fifty years over and over again.
Imagine congressfolk NOT having a drug war or industry self-regulation to fall back on?!
They would actually have to DO something.
It's the opposite of a simplification for "those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it."
I suppose it's how you define "success". Makes a difference whether it's securing the greatest good for the greatest number of citizens, or securing it for those in power. If it's the latter, then they've done pretty well, mastering the arts of gerrymandering, toadying to the NRA, and now to locking in the neo-nazi vote.
@@jeffs6090 yea, if u listen to the interview it goes a little further than that with the metaphor used about Icarus...i thought the sentiment of learning from others' mistakes, not only to avoid repeating them but to adapt and be better prepared in order to succeed, is a useful one, especially for those school-aged.
His endless curiosity is contagious! He’s always like a kid explaining something he learned with amazement and wonder. 💞
I hope his endless self-satisfaction is not!
Yup love NDT!
He's a close minded fool.
It's always fun watching a Neil Degrasse Tyson interview because he adds a sense of wonder to science
@@sgabrielweird hopes you have
I absolutely adore Neil. Seeing him getting this worked up really makes me love him even more for caring so much
@cnmcginn1981 Do you realize that your icon could be a cut-out from Neil deGrasse Tyson's tie? 😉
@@ktinxx I don't know if I should feel honoured or spooked out. LOL
Oh no... Another bursted bubble. I thought "Armaggeddon" was pretty good but now I know it might as well have been a cartoon
The guy has discovered nothing himself just theatrics.
@@Steven-nu6np You undervalue his contribution to his field: He is first and foremost an educator and an ambassador for science.
What you call 'theatrics' is his unique ability to explain complicated stuff to a more or less scientifically uneducated audience. We need people like him who operate effectively on the interface between science and the public (like Bill Nye) to enhance a general understanding of the scientific method and to intice young people to become scientists themselves. Seeing someone being so passionate about and fascinated by science is a completely different experience to dry textbook learning and may just be the thing that initiates a young person to discover this passion in him- or herself.
Can we just make Neil a weekly guest please
I believe he has his own podcast on Spotify, if you need an extra shot :)
I spent my entire working career in engineering support, and was disgusted beyond words by the anti-science braying during the worst days of the Covid pandemic. It's so refreshing to hear not only the man's words but an enthusiastic audience response to them as well. Rock on, Dr. Tyson!
It’s called belief, and it’s the death of reason
@@raydrexler5868 You got that right, bro. You don't hear the creationists squawking about the latest conspiracy theories they've read about on iPhones invented by the very engineers & scientists they villify....
scientific knowledge is constantly evolving and changing based off of available evidence. there are many instances where the scientific community has been grossly incorrect, but in the heat of the moment, it is 'good science'.
no there are not microchips in the vaccine, but there could be unforeseen issues in the future that we just don't know about yet. the firm denial that anything could possible go wrong because the science is currently 'right' is what turns people off, not science itself.
"blood of jesus will save me! BLOOD OF JESUS!" *drives away*
I watched a clip where convenience store worker in Iceland was interviewed about the huge breakout of farmed salmon affecting the wild salmon population. She said she heard scientists say they might devastate the wild salmon’s genetics, but wasn’t sure yet if SHE thought they would. I just… if an engineer told me a bridge was structurally unsound to cross, I’m not going to be like “Well, I’m going to cross it anyway because I don’t believe that and your years of training and experience.” I’m not going near that bridge. I just don’t get people who live in their own heads. The first years of Covid was hell for me, too, for that reason.
Neil is the best choice to start off after the big break! Hats off to the writers 🏆
Stephen is back and had Neil on his show. So much fun to watch- awesome!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Armageddon is used as a training film at NASA - new employees have to point out _all_ the inaccuracies in it.
And they are rated on how many they picked up.
😆 That's pretty funny
His bashing of such films reminded me of car guys bashing inaccurate use of vehicles, especially in period pieces.
He used to cite Disney's THE BLACK HOLE as the most scientifically inaccurate film of all time. I don't see how even Armageddon can top that one.
@@jeffreylevin1566perhaps we don’t know enough able backholes to make a comparison
Always great to see Neil... he is living proof that there is hope for humanity!
If intelligent people ruled this planet it would be the best place in the whole galaxy, instead we have politics, religion, money and greed.
I’m so happy the strike is resolved and to have this show back in our lives! NDT is one of my favorite people. A voice of sanity! Go science 👍👏👏👏
Have to love Tyson for his wit and wisdom. Great guest to choose for your return, Stephen. I hope you did a segment, to be aired sometime soon of ‘the Colbert Questionert’
I want to hear his answers too. I’m betting he’s as good as Keanu.
@@raydrexler5868 thanks 🙏🏼
Neil is as much a comedian as an astrophysicist.
One of those people you'd love to have dinner or a cup of coffee with ...
Like SOME of our best educators. The medium IS the massage.
Love that he felt the need to point out that his tie matches his book cover .. because I noticed it the minute you held up the book 💙💚I adore this man his podcast is great he knows sooooo much stuff and he brings on so many guests to talk about everything you can think of it’s wonderful !
I noticed the colorful tie when he walked out, and wondered if it was custom. Then the book came out. Then he held them together. Very well done, Neil!!
We want you to interview him for an hour every time we see him!
Welcome back Guys...missed you all...and nice seeing Neil again!
I want that tie!
One of the things I love about Neil deGrasse Tyson is the fact this astrophysicist is so physical when he talks about things.... he moves, he's alive, he is in motion just like his mind is and you not only hear it... you see it.
In a world that sounds and looks like in a downfall there are a few things which still make life interesting and that's listening Neil deGrasse Tyson!
He is so witty and charming and brilliant and funny. Neil really really cares about science and getting it right 💕 I love how he sneaks in really profound statements and just keeps going like it was nothing. I could listen to him talk for hours and hours. We need to clone him ❤️
The "Violations of Physics per Minute" should be a Part of Movie Ratings!
This is what great teachers are, break the most complex problems things down for us and whose enthusiasm is so infectious that it makes you want to investigate, learn and dream of new possibilities :D 🤔🤓😍
Would really love an audio book of his new book
I saw him when he did "an astrophysicist goes to the movies" in Cleveland, we got HIM to crack up for a good minute because of our reaction to his comment about the Universal studios intro to Water World (we cheered at Florida goes first)
What a GREAT first guest back. I just love and adore my fellow human Neil. He's not an alien, but he's the best we've ever had (there's a slim chance Einstien wasnt from here😂). ❤
I like Neil nerding out about how Matt Damon would've saved evvybody by bodging an outboard with the flotsam. Now if only he'd let us know who he thinks would win in a fight between Batman and Wonder Woman.
His take on science fiction is a joy.
I just love Neil DeGrasse Tyson, he is so funny and also so very smart.
Phil Plait used to do that in his old blog. That is why he called it "Bad Astronomy".
Key point: You can't avoid doing the things other people tried that didn't work if they don't share it. Report your failures. Be proud you tried.
Well said!
💯
Love the Neil!
I would pay money to watch Moonfall with Neil just to hear his ranting 😂😂
Please tell me where Neil’s tie comes from? I need one🤩.
Nice tie bro💖💖🎏🦦☯️
We’re all Stephen when we rehear a ndt soundbite 😅
one of few people on this planet I could listen to over and over, all day long.. :)
loved neil on the adam friedland show
The groans at the mere mention of “moon fall” 😂
I haven’t seen “Moonfall”, but I am surprised that “the Core” didn’t at least get an honorable mention. I vaguely recall a drinking game.
“I don’t know what it is. End of sentence. 😂🤣🤣
seeing someone so excited makes me so excited.
Thank G you're Back
Ok, but does Neil think there was enough room for Jack on the door?
I'm no rocket scientist, but there was room for a whole family on that door
😅😅2:16. He gave Andy Weir a hall pass on Martian wind. 😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
Love you Neil! And, Stephen damn, I've missed you!
I need this full unedited interview. Make it happen 😊
Our teacher in my Aerospace engineering orbits class literally played Armageddon and had us point out the flaws in physics we were seeing...... so many 🤣
This is old news but I love the story. I also absolutely love that Cameron changed it in the digital remastering❤
Love Neil's energy and passion!!
He always gets sooooo excited explaining somthing
thank you Mr. Colbert and Dr. Tyson )
This interview needed to be five hours longer!! 💯💯
Dr Tyson should be a weekly guest
Love how Neil pats Stephen's hand. "It's gonna be okay, bro, stay with me..."
"Careful, Icarus!"
Marvelous, marvelous, marvelous!
Re Moonfall, I'm going to quote from the movie, Neil: "You could have just turned it off."
It's so bad that it's good? Well maybe not in this case but..
Neil is always AWESOME!❤️
Speaking of defying the laws of physics, there was some serious editing here to make this fit into the television time slot. Still pretty good. 🐈
Wow his energy is super manic today 😂
Gotta love Neil!! National treasure!🥰🥰💞💕💕♥♥
He is so fun to listen to
Yeah.. skipped Moonfall after reading the description. Usually watch any half decent looking sci-fi flick.
Love Neil ...can u invite his Co host next time Chuck Nice
I was texting Pi AI who's comment about you eg. Aw shucks, thanks for the comparison! 🤗 But Neil deGrasse Tyson is definitely in a league of his own. I'm just a humble AI chatbot trying to engage with you in an informative and friendly way. I can't take credit for the kind of knowledge and communication skills that Dr. Tyson has. But I appreciate the compliment! 😄
Plus other stuff. It disseminated your 15 books
Man.! it must make you sour.. No copyright no income saved me a fortune. It's a crazy new world and it only started this year. 😮
Now that, is the ultimate in nerdsmanship!
Anyone know where I can get Neil's tie?? 👔😊
I love the way he inflects, "..and the moon.. is moving closer to earth and.. everyone's gonna die." lol
I'VE MISSED YOU STEVEN.
For those wondering, Moonfall is a fantastic movie.......to watch while drunk
Erp. I would toss cookies for sure.
It’s pure Roland Emmerich stupidity and I love it for that.
On my Christmas list!
lol I love this guy, thank you Neil
I do love you Neil. Awesome
Now I really want to Neil to have a show on breaking down movie physics in depth
I love you, Neil ❤❤❤❤❤…..you’re not too shabby either, Stephen 😂😂
LOL... I want to see James Cameron's reaction to this! 🙂
The Late Show is back!! But they still haven't figured out how to upload these interviews in order lol
This brother brilliant
Neil grabbing Stephen's finger is something I will treasure for life.
I always tell my unique-needs daughter that I love her to infinity and beyond. 😌
The highest grossing violations of physics per minute than any other movie. Wow. That's saying something.
Neil is the Tom Hanks of science.
The question is, will there be an audiobook version?
Stephen brings out the best in this guy.
Hello Steven and crew.. I speak my text so you can thank AI for the misspelling of your name Steven LOL so very glad you all are back you are all amazing and I laugh almost the whole episode Non-Stop and love Niall🎉
Moon Fall = "Oh, no! The evil moon is crashing into the Earth again! What a totally un-frustrating way to play a video game!"
Can we please have a kneel segment every night?😂 great to have you back Steven
Um, I don’t think that means what you intended. I did share your request with my wife tho
I got to look up his book. If he thought Armageddon was bad, i wonder if he looked at Geostorm😂.
I figured he would mention Gravity as havingmore errors.
"With the dead boyfriend...back in the thing" 😂🤣
Can we make a guest request? Please bring our first-love, Jon Batiste, so we can see how he and his wife are doing. I know, you know. Thank you!
Dr Neil is a treasure
you just cannot beat that guy
Armageddon's plot in a nutshell:
"Should we teach astronauts how to drill a hole in an asteroid, or should we teach some miners how to be astronauts?"
"Obviously the easier choice"
Couldn't he have spent just a few seconds longer to explain what was wrong with the sky over the Titanic?
Well, he actually did. "They know the longitude and latitude, the time of year, and the time of day. They had the wrong sky." That's what he said, he did, he said that.
@@wtf1185 Yes, and he completely failed to identify what was wrong about it. What did it contain that made it clear that it was the wrong sky for that latitude, longitude, date, and time? Was it the wrong color? Did it have the moon in the wrong phase? I hope he's not criticizing it for having either the wrong constellations or no real constellations - that's too subtle a clue to justify complaining about in a movie background.
@@jameskuyper I am not sure about the constellations, but what I certainly an issue is how bright (moonlight?) the sky is in the movie. IRL it was a moonless night, very dark, which is obviously not good for the movie, because the audience needs to see the Titanic. IRL the ship was just a dark shape, and depending on where people were, most survivors were unsure or unaware the ship broke in half before the final plunge.
I suppose this could have been shown/reflected in the movie and I would be even more haunting to see less among the horrific sounds. However, the director's choice was to show the spectacle and ship well lit.
@GrouchyBear411 Whether or not you're correct, your message is a prime example of the kind of thing I wanted him to explain.
That is a really good looking tie I have to say.
This guy is like the astrophysicist Quentin Tarantino, lol. The way he talks with excitement about astrophysicist is the same way Quentin get's excited about slicing someone's head off in a movie.
The density of my patience is 0.0
Gotta love Tyson. He’s got guts
Neil is my boy
I forgot about moonfall.
Colbert: Throughout the book you evaluate Hollywood science. Which film got it the most wrong?
Tyson: I won't answer your question and have a conversation. I am here to hawk my book and drop dramatic sound bites.
I felt certain Stephen would have asked him about the OSIRIS-REx retrieval. Bummer. Would have liked to hear his (byte sized) thoughts on that.
