More Steely Dan, please. Great demo! I have a Steely Dan Book that names the chords like this: F#m7(at 9th), E, Bm7, C#m7, F#m7(type2), A9, Dmaj7, G13, F#m7(at fifth), Am7, D, A7, F, G, Bm7(type2), Gmaj7, C#m7#5, Em, D(at 7th fret), Cm7, F, Eb, Gmaj7/A, D(at fifth), D(type2), G, D/F#, G6. Yikes!
I take a break from UA-cam and I saw you abandon ship on the old channel and I was truly heartbroken it had come to this. It must have been about 4 years ago and you taught me the basics and drove me to improve. I left my home to the big city and now I'm stranded in a room practicing trying to make a living off this music thing and it's all thanks to you. I'm just glad the kiddos hadn't disenchanted you to stop posting videos because at this point when I watch a new one it's like having a conversation with an old friend. Also thanks for posting some steely dan, I recently got really into the band and I've wanted to see you do some of their songs for a while. You should do deacon blues. I have about half of the song down and I'd like to see what you would do with it as a whole
Do it man. Who the hell cares... your melodic instinct is awesome to behold. You get the song. The deets are for fussy peeps. I really appreciate that you share your fingers.
ATTENTION All Viewers - I hope this may help us all in our playing.......Here's a tip sequence to help figure out the chords, notes and positions that Guitar Master James James shows us in hundreds of instructional videos; slow down the SPEED of your video view: 1. Go to a video. 2. Hover over the player and click Settings . (Cog Wheel Symbol) 3. Click Speed. 4. Select the speed at which you'd like the video to play.
"Dirty Work" might be a fun one to do. "My Old School" is probably my favorite Dan, but wouldn't have a clue on how to work up a guitar arrangement for that one. Another great lesson here James.
Sounds to me as you nailed it, I'll never remember all the changes, Still hopin' you'll do "love me somebody "( with lead) by Bad Company. I have most of the chords I just can't seem to get my timing right,.... thanks so much, I've learned a lot from you !........ Never Stop !
Any chance of you doing a demo of the guitar solo in Peg? That one always kind of blows my mind. Great cover here too. Thanks for sharing your talent here on UA-cam.
Jeff McElroy If you really want to learn the solo:1. Sheet music can bought at musicroom dot com (the song can be bought , downloaded and printed for only 0.99p(UK).Well worth doing as it is a real tough one to play at speed2 Play along and learn for free on Songsterr dot com (the web site not the app). The solo is bang on as accurate as the sheet music.
I was amazed when you went thru the steps on how you figured out Crackerbox Palace. Now you figured out this Steely Dan classic without knowing the chord names. You're a freaking genius. Type 2 chords? - your guitara hermano paul
The Cuervo Gold, the fine Colombian make tonight a wonderful thing - say it again! Speaking of saying it again, could you do Stay by Bowie from Station to Station?
How do you have your guitar/amp set to get that great strat quack tone? I've got a decent Fender Stratocaster, but I just can't get it to quack quite like I'd like.
Bill Cupp It's set on Fender Twin, with a little delay. The Strat is set on bridge/middle. But I think plucking with fingers rather than using a pick also helps with that tone.
James James I assumed as much, but I didn't think about delay. I've got a couple Fender amps that can get fairly clean. I'm usually a pick guy. I can't fingerpick to save my life, haha. I've been thinking about replacing the pick ups on mine, I just don't think they're as clear as they should be. Maybe something with a sharper sound would work. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
Even Jimmy Page was impressed with Steely Dan and the guitar work on "Reeling in the years".....
Ya gotta love Steely Dan man. That's awesome, thanks brother

"Dirty Work" might be a fun one to do. "My Old School" is probably my favorite Dan, but wouldn't have a clue on how to work up a guitar arrangement for that one.
Another great lesson here James.
Badguitar You mean the Stones "Dirty Work" song from 1986, right?
IdolHans Nope. Steely Dan's "Dirty Work." An underrated gem. ("I'm a fool to do your Dirty Work, oh yeah, etc.")
Sounds to me as you nailed it, I'll never remember all the changes, Still hopin' you'll do "love me somebody "( with lead) by Bad Company. I have most of the chords I just can't seem to get my timing right,.... thanks so much, I've learned a lot from you !........ Never Stop !

JJ another great cover. I am curious how you figure out the chord shapes to play when you have no idea what the name of the chord is?
pbourkas I don't think knowing the names would help me.
Wow, great job. How'd you figure out those chords? lol
Now we're talking. "Any Major Dude"? "Peg"? "deacon Blues"?
Nice,Any Major dude would be great
As always....nice cover.......
How about some covers from Toto?
Rosanna, Africa.....
Art
I've tried to post Toto songs, but they get blocked.
I just try to make it sound okay when I try playing Steely Dan...nice work. Does Walter Becker even know how to play Steely Dan? lol
Bohdisattva?
MarcBrewer I put a Bohdisattva solo up on my channel if you want to check it out. Cheers!
Would love for you to play "do it again"...ridiculous sitar solo and all.
Josh Stenger There's a UA-cam page called playguitarsolos or something like that. That guy kind of closed the book on Do It Again covers.
Josh Stenger I put up an electric sitar solo of that on my channel (if you want to check it out). Thanks & 🍻!
Is that an Erin Johnson Strat?
Oliver Oliver No, just a regular American Standard.
