  • Receiving an IRS letter can be nerve-wracking. However, sometimes the IRS sends good news via mail, as that's their primary mode of communication. The IRS may call you if you're under audit, have a field collector assigned, or are dealing with an office of appeals. But they never text or email; scammers often use these methods pretending to be the IRS. Some scam letters are even mailed. So, always open and review your IRS mail immediately.

Each IRS letter typically addresses one tax year at a time. Recently, the IRS introduced a new letter, LT38, which summarizes your tax problems and debt, warning of impending action. However, some letters can bring good news, like acceptance into a tax relief program or approval of a penalty abatement. These moments can feel like a victory over the IRS.

Regarding balance dues, the IRS sends several notices by mail. The CP14 means your tax return is processed and a bill is due, but it's not an immediate collection notice. Subsequent letters, like CP501, CP503, and CP504, come if the balance remains unpaid, with the CP504 arriving by certified mail, indicating serious action.
Certified mail from the IRS means they want your attention. The LT11 or 1058 notices are final warnings before action is taken. You can appeal these notices with the office of appeals. A CP2000 or examination notice gives you a chance to respond and submit proof to reduce claimed debts. Disagreements can lead to a notice of deficiency (CP3219), which you can appeal to the tax court.
Always review your IRS mail carefully and respond if needed. If it feels overwhelming, reach out for a free case review to find the best resolution for your tax issues.
