Nigel Preston's hugely inventive drums are superb on this track, tribal tom beats and the fast high hat pedal push the pulse of the song along brilliantly
@@yvesaltana5732 The Cult is very much a rock band nowadays and very good at it they are too. Back in the day, Jamie Stewart’s rock solid bass playing allowed Nigel Preston to be more inventive with the drum parts, as he was freed up from just being a time keeper. I saw The Cult in 1985 with Les Warner on the drums. A very good drummer and his playing on Electric is sublime. However, Horse Nation just didn’t work with the ‘rock treatment’. Bands do move on and are never better or worse than they were. Just different as they evolve with their audience. I do however like the music from the earlier line ups.
Was too young and too far away, but how I would have loved to be there as a 14 year old. It kills me that now I’m older and disinterested with options to see what I want. I could have made incredible memories at that gig.
The lyrics for Horse Nation are lifted almost verbatim from the book Bury my heart at wounded knee, written by Dee Brown and first published in 1970. The book was a major influence on Ian in the early days. A heavy read on the horrific impact of white colonisation on native American peoples and their culture.
I read this book too Dave, many years ago but I still remember to this day how it upset me while reading it. It made my blood boil about the treatment they were subjected to! A slow genocide. This may sound silly but I cried while reading it and afterwards.
@@sandrafisherhayes3219 I can understand that completely. The lying, manipulation, exploitation and murder of native Americans was barbaric. Sadly, its history repeated. I live in Australia and the treatment of our indigenous population was equally shameful.
@@davew5167 😥☹😡😤🤬 makes me sick to my stomach knowing that white British 'Christians' believed themselves superior to Native peoples all over the world! Not just the British though the Spanish were worse! This is why I love Ian because he CARES! ❤ Reading my second book about the First Nations in the US titled 'The Earth is Weeping' by Peter Cozzens. Tough going but determined to finish it.
Yeah i noted that when my wife and i were visiting the USA we went to the Smithsonian Institute there was a whole exhibition devoted to slavery and it's impact inc a small movie theatre and probably 200ft of exhibits, yet the exhibition for Native Americans was literally a couple of boards, a couple of costumes and a few bits and bobs. It was literally the size of a football goal. i was disgusted.
I had the video of this way back when and the cassette of Dreamtime which had the whole of this concert (almost) as the b side. I still consider it about 35 years after i first heard it in the late 80's to be one of the best gigs/concert video's i've ever seen and heard. I've been to over 100 gigs in my life and seen 100's more on tv and that includes seeing the Cult live in Glasgow 4 times over the year from 1991. Going to see the Death Cult tour in November where they will paly some of these songs, cannot wait.
This whole set = the best bass playing performance ever. Others may be technically better but Jamie just destroys on everything they played that night.
@@decoder0802 I was totally shocked to hear about his death! What a waste of a beautiful young man! Heroin is a terrible scourge! Brilliant drummer! Every time I watch this live show it makes me realise how much I miss Nigel's excellent drumming 😒☹

However, Ray deserves credit for performing the drums on the original recording of this song.
Credit duly noted to Ray Mondo for the original part!

What happened to this drummer? Best drumming and base and best song, frankly, they've ever done.
So sorry to tell you sad "news", but drummer Nigel Preston died of a drug overdose on 1 April 1992. Still cuts me up to this day...
