  • There have been some bad Assassins throughout the different eras of Assassin's Creed. But little are as selfish, greedy, and idiotic as Duncan Walpole from Assassin's Creed Black Flags Prologue. In this video I cover the life of Duncan Walpole, what drove him to betray the assassins, and why I believe he is the worst master assassin in Assassin's Creed...

5:45 I AM NOT DEFENDING DUNCAN! I am only trying to educate you on the subject of flintlocks. The other flintlock on Duncan wouldn't had worked either as the problem was that the gunpowder in both of them was wet, and therefor couldn't ignite properly (the first flintlock wasn't broken at all). He was later able to shoot him because the gunpowder would've been able to dry itself just enough to catch a spark and ignite, and Duncan tried his luck. Also, because you said that Duncan missed, I remind you that flintlocks, because of their tehnology, or rather the lack of it (messy "cartridges" and smooth bore barrels) are VERY inaccurate (in the game, we're so good at shooting with them just because game mechanics and all that to make it more enjoyable and epic). Imagine if Duncan had successfully defected, and given the Templars both the observatory and the sage. Leading the templars to completely destroy the assassins in the West Indies, and potentially even farther afield. And the only reason that he doesn’t succeed in this is because he meets Edward fucking Kenway. Who is ACTUALLY one of the most influential assassins in all of history. Almost single-handedly wiping out the Templars in the West Indies and the Americas. You can almost argue that Kenway killing Duncan was the most historically significant assassination in the entire series. I don’t fault Micheal Jordan for getting swept by Larry Bird, and I don’t fault Duncan for falling to the man who would become one of the most powerful and influential assassins ever. It honestly has nothing to do with training. (It’s also kinda obvious to me that you’re going to body him when he’s the first enemy you fight in the whole game). He also only fights you because he’s cornered, and AFTER trying very hard to run away. (Compare him running to Charles Vaine later in the game and I think the difference between an assassin and a non-assassin is obvious) Duncan’s death has always more highlights Edward’s prowess than Duncan’s “lack of” for me.
Edit: If that’s not enough, consider the fact that if Dencan had killed Edward, then NONE of the Kenways would have been born. The second most influential family in the entire Assassin Templar conflict, gone. No Haytham, No Connor. Just imagine what that would have done to the world… And his [Duncan’s] second pistol likely only worked because he had given it time to dry out before shooting it. I think it speaks to his intelligence that after attempting to shoot Edward, after he realized he was a threat, and the pistol was non-functioning he tried to escape. I think that’s the smartest next move. And considering that they both barely survived that shipwreck, I think he was rather calm and decisive where most might not be. That also speaks to his assassin training.

I think Captain Chevalier de la Vérendrye from Rogue is up there as well. He got stomped by Shay, who’d only been in the assassins for a little while, if I remember right. Yet the Captain was a veteran of the seven years war and had decades more experience than Shay. He left his ship, (a man o war,) where it could be easily taken out and it couldn’t save itself, whereas a much smaller and barely outfitted ship did. Plus he was arrogant as all hell and remained as such to Shay, even after having his ass handed to him. And like the other assassins, refused to consider that their mentor’s repeatedly sending them off to retrieve the precursor artefacts was leading to potentially millions of innocents dying. Plus he shot Shay in the back like a coward, when none of the other blind to the truth assassins did so.

It is mentioned throughout the whole game how talented Edward is, not only his physical skills, but also his 6th sense (the ISU sense/Eagle Vision) is insanely strong since he ''had it since he was a lad''. Evie was the worst, but still. She basically handed the templar grand master the shroud, failed to even get in a position where she may have assassinated any templars at all, with the exception of Lucy, who she failed to take down multiple times. She blamed Henry and her brother Jacob for all her own mistakes, and she over exaggerated the impact of their mistakes, despite Jacob being the only one with a plan, and the only one actually stopping the templars at all, and Henry being the only one besides Jacob who was actually bringing useful information about the templars. In addition Henry is the only reason evie managed to do any good at all, yet she still blames him for any failings the pair were present for. Evie and Henry then abandoned Jacob to leave Jacob as the mentor of a young and new assassin's brotherhood in a time of change and instability. Even after all the lectures evie made Jacob suffer, she left him alone with all the responsibility. No matter what anyone says about the frye twins, evie is absolutely the worst assassin who ever lived and she doesn't represent the values of the assassins at all. Jacob was a true assassin, who made mistakes and was indeed reckless, but he learned and became better. Very similar to altier or Edward in that regard. Evie never learns as she never even properly addressed when she was wrong.

Saying his other pistol on his belt was "fully functional" isn't strictly true, just as it isn't really true to say that the pistol he tried to use in the cutscene wasn't functional either and it has to do with how guns worked in that era. The blackpowder was wet and failed to ignite; without a proper propelent, the pistol would misfire and not shoot - this is even stated in dialogue. Now, it is reasonable to assume the pistol on his belt was fully submerged in water also and would misfire also. The other pistol working later in gameplay meant Duncan had simply reloaded the weapon with fresh powder. It could be argued Duncan dramatically throwing the weapon to the ground was a bad idea, though. Basically, the pistols were fine, it was the powder that was the problem. Years of watching Sharpe as a kid for you!
