A couple of tricks I learned for loading not only my FG-20 but any 35 mm SLR: push in the rewind button, so the sprocket can freewheel. In case the film hangs on something, you can pull it out easily and try again. And be careful never to touch the shutter curtains.

Amazing how quickly people are forgetting how to operate film cameras with the proliferation of digital cameras..film has become something of a niche for us diehards who still have film cameras. One quirk with the FG/FG-20 Nikon film SLR's: the shutter defaults to speed of 1/90th of a second ('M90') until frame counter gets to '1' with a fresh film cartridge. I habitually fire off a couple of blank shots with any film SLR with the lens aperture set at the smallest opening (usually f/16 or f/22 depending on the lens mounted) and shutter speed set at the fastest speed to make sure I get to unfogged film frames with a fresh roll of film before I take photos. As to previous questions about batteries needed for operation: I have an FG and the shutter will operate without batteries although at speed of 1/90th of a second only (the 'M90' setting on the shutter speed dial) and of course without operation of the light meter. For storage I keep my FG set on 'M90' to prevent accidental battery drain.

If you have an FG-20, this may be helpful. However, the FG-20 was a FG stripped of some its best features. It was introduced to replace the FG because sales of the popular FG were cutting into sales of the FM/FE series. Oddly, the FG-20 sells for nearly as much as the FG, making the FG currently much undervalued.

Yes. It is helpful for those who own this model. Thanks for the back story though.

I‘m confused, my window didn’t start at S nor skipped to one after pulling back a few times... Can you help me out?

Is it a new film roll? New rolls should start at S but I had the same problem with it not going to 1 and I realized I was because I didn't have the back of the camera on

I can't use this camera without the battery? Is the battery for the light meter only? Mine needs to be fixed but I would like to know if I can still use it without the battery?

    Hey!
So my Nikon FG’s shutter counter does not work. Is it worth it to fix it?
Or should I risk it and press and wind my shutter 3-4 times?

If it's just wasting a roll of film it might be worth a try. Depending upon how close you are to a major city there might be a camera shop where you could make a good relationship who could fix it fairly easily. Depends on what the camera is worth to you versus what you can get another one on the market for. Whether you think you'll actually use it you know what I mean.

Try what you want, but do not take it in for repair. Any repairman opening it up for any reason is going to charge you $100 or more. You can buy dozens of replacements on ebay for $60, more or less. If you have a local repair shop, consider taking your old broken FG in with the new version and see if you can trade it for the cost of a CLA on the new version. The shop may be motivated by getting you old model as a parts source for future FG repairs. Otherwise, just store away your old FG as a parts supply in the event of need.
