The heads with the black dots are the ones that this drum set needs. The sound is so much better. Great Find.

These were the same drums sold by Sears back in 1980. My first kit! Except they were double headed. I bought CB 700 concert tomes. 8 & 10 and 14 & 15. Exact color, lugs and shell construction. The Sears drums had no badge. They weren’t bad either. The bass drum sounded great on my kit.
    Yours sounds good! Great find!

This is wild! i had the exact same experience buying my first concert tom kit about a year ago, i saw someone selling "old Pearl kit" for ~350$, i went and checked them out, asked for 250$ for just the shells no hardware, and he accepted! I've done the research and they're Pearls 70's phenolic concert toms, 13, 14, 15 and 16 concert toms, 18 inch floor tom and 22 kick. same wrap finish as yours too, they're in pretty good Knick but I've been refurbing them as much as i can, hopefully i can get them sounding as good as these.

Pearl is now selling The President, or something, a line of drums which are basically a Maxwin kit with Luan shells for big bucks!

Peter Criss of KISS used a Pearl concert tom set on KISS ALIVE and into late 70's. I believe those Pearl concert toms with Peter's attack was a perfect fit for KISS'S big full sound on ALIVE. Great find, you play well, take care.

Thank you. I didn't realize that Peter Criss used concert toms. But it makes sense when you hear old Kiss songs, you can hear that tone.

I started drumming back in the 1970s. It seemed like everyone was into single headed toms. Those of us who couldn't afford a Concert Tom kit would leave the bottom heads on our regular toms, but cut the entire head out except for about an inch around the edge. They still looked like two-headed toms, but had the single tom sound.
I still like the single head sound. I envy you for that kit. It is pretty awesome!

Nice video. I actually just bought a "room full" Westbury drums which are exactly the same. The only difference between yours and Slingerland or Ludwig is $$. I thought the video was going to be another with someone who just happened to "find" an expensive vintage kit when he just happened to be video recording his trip to the garage sale, like we all do.
    Nice to see real!!!!

You should try the mics in from the bottom. The Tom's will sound much better!

I have this same kit that I have owned since I was a kid. My parents bought it for me in the late 1970’s. Mine is a Reuther kit , also made by Pearl. Mines silver but it’s the exact same shells and hardware. Great sounding kits with the only downside being the rather flimsy Tom mounts. Great video !

My first drums were a Maxwin that someone had covered in black wrap like what’s on the Combo snare. Complete with some amazing Camber cymbals (lol). But they got me through and definitely that 70s sound with black dots. Good find

I remember the church next door to my house had a burnt orange maxwin kit. Standard sizes for the time. 12", 13" toms, 16" floor tom, and a 22" bass drum. All the bottom heads were gone. No muffling on the toms. But the bass had a pillow in it. Fun times. That was my intro to drum set.

For 375 thats a more than acceptable concert tom kit! Curious what cymbals you are using as well, they fit the vibe!

Ahh, what a great resurrection and confirmation of the mighty sounds that can come from these kits! Congrats on finding this rare gem and the extras! This has become my secret drumming passion in recent years. I have a number of traditional drum sets, but have stumbled on several concert tom classics that I have found very fun and interesting to play, especially in one cover band where the classic concert tom sound is perfect! Other than a few sets of small concert toms to match some of my kits, I've found really nice complete kits including a few 70's Ludwig Octa-Plus's, also a Quadra-Plus and a Sound Projector II from about 1980. I never spend too much and found several of these under $1,000 and in perfect condition! Thanks for the upload and rock on!

pretty amazing that you found those two extra toms that match the set ! I made a concert tom kit with some of my extra drums, I took the bottom lugs off, and filled the holes with pieces of wooden dowels glued in, sanded and painted, they're all black. I got 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 inch rack toms, and 16, 18 floortoms. mixture of mapex, sonor, premier, and Pearl, and put all new black dot heads like you did

@@kylekrysadrums Ya, well I couldn't find one on marketplace, only saw 3 in 3 years, and they were too far away, or too expensive. I finally ordered one from Precision drums in New York, just the wood shell with the bearing edge cut on top, i drilled holes, put some mapex lugs and mount piece, and painted it

I think concert toms are cool. C.S. Dots or Ludwig Rockers heads work for me. For a warmer tone, try Coated C.S.Dots...😊

Love Maxwin drums. First kit was a 70's Maxwin (not concert toms) & upgraded to a 90's Maxwin set before the line was discontinued by Pearl.

    • @kylekrysadrums
      @kylekrysadrums  Рік тому

Thanks! The hi hats were some old Sabian AA Regular Hats from the 80's or 90's. The crash was a vintage 18" Zildjian A (thin) and the ride was a vintage 22'' Zildjian A (thin) as well.

I have a set of premier concert toms. I believe that they were an orchestral kit. Birch and I put Evans hydraulics on there and they sound great!
I paid $250 with modernish tom mounts.
