Just a little background here, James' father had just been diagnosed with stage 4 terminal kidney cancer. This was the very first time James had sung this to his dad. His recording company tried to get him to use 'Auto-Tune' but he refused and the song was recorded exactly as we see it here, so that's why his voice was wavering at times. Everything you see here is real and obviously very emotional. James, like his father, were officers in the British military fighting out in Kosovo. They found a donor for his dad eventually so thank God he survived, but I understand he's not doing too well again. This video is a very special one because it's all completely real.
Right? He sings high enough, and let the man use whatever tone that came from his emotions to the lyrics. I see no imperfections lol. Just perfect for the story or scenario
Thats actually his dad in the video, he was dying of stage 4 kidney disease and needed a new kidney. His dad had already donated one and the other was failing. He did survive and get a transplant but it was a good opportunity for them to speak their true emotions to each other. Both being typical British men we don't talk about our emotions enough. Then one day unfortunately it's too late. So James done it as a song with his dad there.
This broke me, I was lying beside my dad when he passed from cancer. Sitting on my mothers bed when she passed from Alzheimer’s. Opens a huge pain for me. Everyone always be there for your parents. I’m grateful I was always there for mine. Appreciate how blessed you are if you still have your parents. That final goodbye is heartbreaking 💔
Oh My God! I've never heard this song before, and it's obvious that James Blunt is VERY emotional as he's singing it. It is obvious he is fighting back tears
I heard recently that James donated all the proceeds from this amazing video to the brilliant UK charity 'Help For Heroes' who do such fantastic work for ex-servicemen and service women. As a former officer in the British military and with a family background in the service...I think that was a wonderful thing to do. Good on you James!!
This does have a happy ending. James's dad was in desperate need of a kidney transplant & they couldn't find a donor match, so he wrote this song with his dad in the video. At the minute a remote relative turned out to be a match & thankfully his dad is recovering & doing well.
Oh why did you have to play this one, now you've got my in tears. It could apply to any friendship, not just father and son. Pass the tissues please.🙂🎶👍❤️
With all due respect and I do respect your opinion, I don't agree. I think the lyrics regarding the role Reversal of how his father used to comfort him as a child and now he is the one "chasing the monsters away " mean this song can only really be describing the dynamic between a parent and child. That's what makes it special and an outstanding track by who many ppl once thought was a very mediocre musician. This masterpiece changed their mind and also my own, so please don't make it meaningless by saying it could be about anyone. Let it be what it is .👍🌷
I saw him in concert just after this song came out and the whole arena was emotional when he sang this..It was an amazing experience. He is such an underrated artist.Thank you for reacting to him
My father is Terminal and this song put me in floods of tears. I've not been able to see him in 2 years because of Covid. I cry every night like I've already lost him. 😭😭
I feel this. Was with my dad till his last breath, something you never forget. Talked to him even though he was fading away hearing is the last thing to go when we journey to the next life. Beautiful.
Mate, your content is absolutely just what we need this time of the year. I don't watch much, because I just am in abit of a muddled atm with my life. Your love for music is absolutely epic and I love you bud. 💙
This is one of my favorite songs ever. I'm not ashamed to say it makes me cry almost every time I listen to it. "Don't be afraid, it's my turn to chase the monsters away" really gets me.
Oh wow. Bless you and your dad. I can see how this song would mean so much more to you. I've never heard this before now, I'm a daughter who lost my dad in 2008, and I just sat here and cried my heart out through the whole heartwrenching song. My dog demanded to sit in my lap, so he could lick my tears away. lol. Peace to you, sir.
I just stumbled across this. I’d forgotten I’d watched it before and forgot I’d commented on it. I cried through it, again, it’s remarkably personal to me. I started to read the comments, in particular this one and wanted to say that it was my experience too, then saw it was my comment. Weird! Miss my dad.
The most beautiful and emotional song I think I've ever heard, full of love and I'm crying like a baby 💖😭😭😭💖 How many of us wish we could have spoken to our parent like this before they passed? I'm not your son, you're not my father, we're just two grown men saying goodbye 😭
This reminds me of my parents and brother who have passed. This song takes my heart and grabs it, reminding you of what you had and have lost. I have not cried in years due to a mental block but this made me weep. My Dads last words to me were he loved me and was proud of me. He was my rock and my hero, and we adored each other. I can't imagine listening to this beautiful song and not feel emotional. Your reactions were so honest and genuine and your words touched me so much sweetheart. God bless you Jayvee love and hugs sweetheart Mary-Ellen UK
This is my favourite James Blunt song, so raw, both the song and the video. Thankfully James’ dad made a recovery, he needed a kidney transplant and a donor came forward after the song was released. So emotional ❤️ xx
My GOD! I have never heard this song before but the second the piano started and his voice kicked in I knew I was in for it. What an incredible emotional rollercoaster. If your parents live, you will cry, bc it is one of the most sad thing to realize they grow old and you have to change places. Know you take care of them as they care of you in your life. If your lost your parents....needless to say: cry like a baby aswell.
That was his real father on the video. His father was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney disease and needed a transplant but there was no match. Thanks to this video, a relative came forward and the operation took place. His father as of today is not doing so well as I gathered from different comments. One last thing, please: Do you have any information concerning a reactor who used to be very active on YT but totally disappeared from the scene? She goes under the name "Smylyface" Thanks.
Daddy, it seems or father/son roles are reversing. I will take care of you now. I'm not the son and you're not the father. But I'm not quite ready for the complete role reversal. I lost my father last year in November 6 days before his 67th birthday a day that we shared our birthday are the same day the 17th and it still hurts but I love this song because crying is also healing 😭💪💪💪
Monsters is simple, minimal and stark. A heartbreaking ode from a son to his father, the track showcases James’ emotional vocals at their strongest and is sure to reduce even the most resilient to tears. On the new track, James reflects, “Monsters is a song for my father who I idolised as a child, has been my best friend through adult life, and now urgently needs an O positive kidney donor.” His father received a kidney from a distant family member…
Singer James Blunt has told the BBC how he refused an order to attack Russian troops when he was a British soldier in Kosovo. Blunt said he was willing to risk a court-martial by rejecting the order from a US General. His dad in the video also served in the British army. James also stood as an Honor guard when the queen's mom was laying in state.
Another moving song is about his time in Kosovo, called No Bravery. I don't know if you know but he was a captain in the British army, a tank commander. His father was a colonel and helipcopter pilot. James was partly responsible for preventing what could have been world war 3, by refusing to carry out an order. An amazing man as well as a great singer. He said that everyone in the studio was in tears except his father who simply said :why is everyone crying? I'm still here.
Thank you thank you Jay!!! I’ve been asking for this a long time!! The emotion is absolutely real. It is his dad in the video with him. As others have said, he was in end stage kidney failure and desperately needed a kidney transplant, but was very difficult to match so they believed he would die before one was found. With the release of the video however, a match was ultimately found, his dad had the transplant, and as of a year ago was doing ok. 😘
His dad needed a new kidney but they couldn't find a match. He wrote this song for him, telling his father he will chase all the monsters away from his dad.It worked. After this song came out a distant cousin heard it and stepped forward and was a match. The kidney transplant took place and his father is doing well. This is literally THE FIRST TIME I listened to this song and didn't sob like a child
Heard this song for the first time today and it brought me back to the time surrounding my father’s battle with, and loss to cancer. This song totally wrecked me. Most visceral reaction I’ve ever had to a song. Wow…
James Blunt can really wring it out of a person. He is especially good with these emotional, melancholy songs. I love 1973. It's more of a driving/up-tempo beat background. The man is talented.
Because James released this song a cousin they didn’t know about came forward. He was a match for Charles and gave him a kidney. He is doing well last I heard. Charles donated one of his kidneys when he was younger. Then his second one failed. He was probably down to weeks when this song was made. It is emotional because it is real.
Thanks for reacting to this one. Its a song that means so much to so many of us. I said goodbye to my dad at the beginning of covid and held his arm the final two days whilst he was dying in hospital.. This song gets me every time I hear it x
You are intelligent and sensible and I enjoyed your analysis. Me and my 11 year old son are big James Blunt fans and I remember we were in the car together and they said here's James Blunts brand new single and by the time he got to the first chorus we were Ballin, so I don't know how you held back but...damn ...what an emotional song
Never lost a father, but I still cry anyways lol. It’s that pure emotion in his eyes an voice. The lyrics hit hard, cuz I naturally feel his pain and hardship. Been a blunt fan since 2011. I knew w of him in 05 with his big hit Beautiful, But didn’t start listening to his albums till 2011. Instantly became a huge fan.
I would like you to listen to Goodbye my Lover by James Blunt if you have the time 😇 His biggest hit is "You're beautiful " but I find that track underwhelming and clichéd, Goodbye my Lover suits his voice perfectly and is a wonderful song.
I've been known for the last 40 years as the guy who knows everything about music and who sang what song and when. But this is the most emotional song I've ever heard
I don't think anyone was ready for this one. No one, NO ONE that I've played it for, girl or guy, could stop themselves from being touched by it, tearing up during it, or like me - just fall apart. It's just so beautiful - the music (piano, especially), the lyrics & mostly James Blunts face & eyes broke my heart!! What a song.💚
It's not often you introduce me to a track and I'm quite aware of who James Blunt is. For some bizarre reason however, I had never heard this song before. Made me cry.
What a punch to the gut! I lost my Dad 7years ago this coming Remembrance Day(Nov. 11th in Canada), and didn't get a chance to say goodbye in person. Powerful sentiment and message. 💔😥🌺🌈🌉👋💖
Interesting to hear your take that he's saying 'I'm not your son, you're not my father' because its less painful - to me its always seemed its more about when death comes around then you go beyond the whole father/son thing, and everyone's just a person, everyone lives and everyone dies
Just a little background here, James' father had just been diagnosed with stage 4 terminal kidney cancer. This was the very first time James had sung this to his dad. ❤❤❤
It was cancer

The record execs wanted him to do another version, to hit the notes better. Luckily he stood his ground - the imperfections makes this song perfect!
Kinda baffles me that anyone would think this song is about being pitch-perfect.

Oh My God! I've never heard this song before, and it's obvious that James Blunt is VERY emotional as he's singing it. It is obvious he is fighting back tears
hes not fighting back tears, hes really crying in it, you can see his father hold his arm and rub it after he starts to cry.

Me and my 11 year old son are big James Blunt fans and I remember we were in the car together and they said here's James Blunts brand new single and by the time he got to the first chorus we were Ballin, so I don't know how you held back but...damn ...what an emotional song
Yeh sung with real emotion specifically about his dad's health battles....so it's full of genuine raw emotion.
Well done for holding it together, this song makes me a blubbering mess.
I've been known for the last 40 years as the guy who knows everything about music and who sang what song and when. But this is the most emotional song I've ever heard
😪so much emotion. Never heard it before. Can't stop crying. His words are so emotive and so true when loosing a loved one 💔
I just lost my dad recently so this is a very emotional song made me cry
So glad James never changed the song. It is perfect in every way. Stunning 😭😭😭❤️❤️❤️
I really appreciated this one. Pure emotion..
Interesting to hear your take that he's saying 'I'm not your son, you're not my father' because its less painful - to me its always seemed its more about when death comes around then you go beyond the whole father/son thing, and everyone's just a person, everyone lives and everyone dies
I think he may be right.
I read he did an interview and he wanted to convey to his father that he was more than a father. That he was his friend too and he loved him.
This one made me cry .....first time I have heard it!
Just wow is all I can say. Thought of my own dad RIP
Beautiful and Heartfelt!
