Great summary of what the era meant...1984, last semester high school, when friends and I had the luxury of lazing around my parents’ comfy house watching Repo Man confident we’d obtain all of the material success we’d seen in movies but without selling out to The Man like our parents did! 😀. Counter culture would be easy breezy!
I have not seen Repo Man, but your review Morgan, definitely makes a deep impression to seek it out to watch. Thanks again for another stellar review! 😊
I vividly remember tiny postage stamp-sized advertisements for REPO MAN in the NY Daily News and maybe a random poster on the subway. I was 14 in junior high at the time but remember it was marketed as a "Bladerunner-esque" future dystopian film- which is wasn't so I was quite confused when I finally rented it from the video store a few years later and felt disappointed. The whole story went over my head and bored me, but now, decades later, I'm ready to give it another shot. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would miss the '80s because at the time I felt life sucked.
I've heard of but never seen this. I will look it up after your review, Morgan. The 80s had a weirdness that will never be duplicated. And that's why I love them so much!
One of my favorite off-beat films! Mike Nesmith also played Otto's father. Speaking of generic goods, punk band Public Image Limited also released the "Generic Album", which was even one of their best. The cover was the same plain wrap the everything in this film has, lol.
This film was very ahead of it's time. The music, the story. It was a true staple of the 80s. And once this movie came out on HBO and the movie channels everyone my age in elementary school thought this movie was the absolute best! I seen it when I was older I watched it and I loved the movie even more as I understand it much more. I realized the castcwas pretty incredible for a low budget film. This was Emilio's first lead film abd he killed it. But the cast was really great! He movie plot was fun as hell! And boy this movie is was abd always beca timeless classic! If it's on TV, I'm definitely going to be busy for an hour and a half or so. This movie had a fun script abd this was Emilio's coming out party! This was definitely his movie and he was incredible! I mean out of this great cast, Emilio Estevez notonly stole every scene. But the whole dam movie! Such a classic masterpiece!!!
Nice summary - I had the privilege to see Repo Man in 1984 in Raleigh and the band Johnny Quest performed right before in the theater. So many good memories - all my pals and I would quote this movie all the time. Also, Morgan dig your library behind you, you have a decent selection on books.
Obviously you can’t hit every moment Chris Farley style “remember that part when…?” but I was hoping to see an aside about the moment when goons show up at Otto’s former grocery store boss’ house and when he answers the door we see behind him Kevin IN HIS PAJAMAS. A throwaway beat that is a good measure of how inspired this movie was because, as you say, it’s all connected. And thank goodness we don’t know exactly how it is connected.
I've watched a few of your reviews and this is so far my favorite. I have watched Repo Man countless times and didn't catch all the references (the plate of shrimp sign, the guys named after beer among the most obvious). This movie is gleefully dystopian and full of punk attitude both of which I fully enjoy. As you mentioned, it is endlessly quotable but most people don't know which movie I am quoting. "Ordinary fucking people. I hate 'em""
Hi from Australia.!!! I am in your demographic....... I love that your presentation is also Gen X. I am bit over all the yelling, fast talk, flashing lights, cuts and negativity in everything UA-cam reviews currently...
Have you seen the interview between Alex Cox and the actual inventor of the neutron bomb? (where they discuss Repo Man, among other things) It's _seriously_ odd, and on YT
Brilliant. Possibly the best film of the decade. And the best line... "Relationship? ..." Thank you so very much.

The Ralph's Brand was marketed as "Plain Wrap" lol.

My husband loves repo man!! I now have to watch it. What fun!! And I totally heart Emilio Esteves!!
I've never seen the whole movie. I'll have to rectify that.
So glad you're continuing your excellent in depth reviews of 80's entertainment. I'm a '74 kid as well.

Say Anything has to be on your list. ❤
Good morning. 🌞
Cool video Morgan. I cant wait for Valley Girl. The soundtrack made it such a great movie. Be safe.

Big Alex cox fan. I had no idea that guy was jokers sidekick. Thanks for the info
