I haven't had a stick car since high school, but driving w/ one-pedal regen in an EV on curvy mountain roads? awesome!
It's the same instant pedal control and G-force /pedal/driver feedback, but, infinite speed and no RPM/gearshfit worries!
(plus, you get range BACK going down, and don't have to worry about overheating brakes or clutch or engine!!)
(mostly) all of the fun (just no engine/exhaust note), and none of the worries/work :)

Great video, great discussion, excellent points!
I’ve had my SR+ for nearly two years now. 26,000 miles of driving across town, up and down the West Coast (LA to Portland OR), and across the US (CA to KY). Never. A. Problem.
With the updates I, like you, have no desire or need to buy the latest Tesla. Two years old and my car still feels fresh and new.
In my 50+ years of driving, I’ve never experienced a car like this: fun to drive, cheap to run, and easy to live with.

I’ve had my 3 RWD for 2 yrs now, no issues. I’ve taken it on long trips with the last being to Myrtle beach and back, never worried about range. The drive was more comfortable than my old ICE car, don’t mind the charging stops since I can never sit for more than an 1-1.5 hrs before my backside starts hurting. I like being able to walk around and stretch some, did the same with my ICE car. @Ernest Z 50+ yrs of driving! Wow! 😮

Years ago I drove a supercharged Acura Integra GS-R. Loved rowing through the gears and the Tenabe Racing Medallion exhaust. So much fun!! Then I got an Acura RL luxury sedan. It was the equivalent of today’s Tesla as far as tech is concerned. Today, I drive a Tesla Model 3 Performance. I do miss my Integra & RL but the immediate low end torque and low/no cost of maintenance makes the Tesla far better and I barely miss my gas cars at all.

Don't miss my gas cars. Couldn't get rid of them fast enough. Build quality of my December 22 M Y 7-seater is solid. I found two defects, and they are superficial only, hardly noticeable. A big factor in moving to Tesla was getting my life back. Too much time wrenching on busted parts late Sunday night so I could make it to work the next day. I was so sick of doing all the back and forth to mechanic after mechanic and being broken down on the side of the road. And I did all of the preventative maintenance, stuff just kept breaking. Tesla is like a breath of fresh air (literally, as I can pre-condition the car in the garage without killing the kids in it). It just makes sense. It's a better car all around, by a lot. Safety, Sentry mode, dog mode, camp mode, bioweapon defense mode, Joe mode, the convenience of Keep Climate On, the usefulness of the Theater, arcade, and premium connectivity for some kids while others use the app to demonstrate emissions test mode. I could go on... it's a bomb a$$ car.

We took a road trip in our Kia Niro EV which required a couple charging stops. We didn't have access to the Supercharger network (obviously) so we had to plan the stops beforehand. That being said, it was very doable, and the slight inconvenience on road trips is more than made up for by the convenience of everyday charging at home.

It's going to be an adjustment. I like the seat height of my Equinox when going through a drive through. We also got invited out to the country (100 miles away) for a Christmas party and took the Equinox because charging and range were impacted by the cold for our Tesla Model 3 long range. We just didn't want to sit and charge that long on the way home. Other than that the Tesla is super fun to drive. The ability to accelerate and "get out of the way" at any moment never gets old. It's a safety feature! 😁

09:48 - not having to really drive helps also. Not only is the car super comfortable, but I also don't have to drive much. I recently went on a 1K mile road trip, and actually drove for about 15 - 20 miles. All the highway driving was handled exquisitely by Enhanced Autopilot. Great stuff. FSD Beta is only $99/month now and I can subscribe month to month, so I can stop whenever I want. 10X+ more safe than driving on my own for less than $1k/year, sign me up. That's way cheaper and way less hassle then owning and operating an actual tank for maximum safety. Plus, the Tesla is a much smoother ride than an Abrahams.

I learned to drive in a Opel Manta, which happened to have an automatic. Two or three years later, my dad had replaced it with a Datsun, with a four speed manual transmission. That was in the mid 1970s, and in 1979, I bought a car for myself for the first time. It was a Subaru GF, with a five speed manual. Up until this past June, I never owned a car with an automatic transmission, and I hated the rare occasion that I had to drive an automatic. In 2021, my niece let me take a short drive in her Model 3. That drive infected me with a growing desire to have one for myself. By March of last year, I drove to the nearest Tesla center, and put in my order. Of course, with my luck, that was the day that they upped the price a thousand or two. It was finally delivered in late June, and my transition from driving nothing but small cars with stick shifts (Subarus, Hondas, and Mazdas), to driving a car with only a single forward "gear", was practically seamless. Any time I drove a regular automatic transmission car, at least once during the drive, I'd make a stab at the nonexistent clutch pedal. In seven months of driving a Model 3, I have only made that motion once, and that was perhaps six months ago. I have caught myself reaching for the nonexistent gearshift several times as I come to a stop before pulling out onto a different roadway, but that habit is fading fast. Overall, there is the occasional feeling that I miss the six speed manual that I had in my last Subaru, but the driving experience of a Tesla is so unique, and fun in its own way, along with the total lack of worrying about oil changes, and having to pump gas when it's -10°C outside with a stiff wind. So to finish a long winded speech, the only thing I miss from my gas cars, is the clutch and gear shift, but not nearly enough to make me question my decision to buy a Tesla.

For temps in the 20s or below, a gas car is definitely advantageous because you essentially have a fire burning to heat the cabin and keep you warm. In my 'ol 2013 Volt, if I run the heat to a comfortable degree, I loose about 10 to 15 miles of the roughly 40 mile battery range before the engine kicks on.

Good summary of pros/cons! For me, roadtripping is BETTER in an EV, mostly due as you said to the built-in rest (charging) breaks, plus..
AUTOPILOT. Having the car basically drive itself most all the time on highway, while I watch over things and rest a bit and enjoy the ride, is SO much less stressful and fatiguing... and then a 15min break every 2hrs or so as well, makes for MUCH more refreshed arrival.
The GPS/nav is also lightyears ahead of everyone else, w/ giant screen map w/ google maps and POI data, plus satellite photo maps ($10/mo sub for that and internet streaming music), makes driving to any unfamiliar place a breeze, and kind of like Google Earth-surfing in real life :)
and yes, the amazing sound system w/ multiple online streaming sources, plus MP3 etc on USB drive, I have my entire home AND internet music library at my fingertips. Even podcasts from TuneIn etc in the car , or anything you want w/ bluetooth from phone apps.
Plus, it's cheaper... varies, but in the west it's around 10c/mile, not counting free hotel overnight charges... much better than gas.
I really feel I get to enjoy the DRIVE, and scenery along the way, not just the destination, and arrive more relaxed and happier, which.. is kind of the point of a roadtrip!
(Now, if you are cannonballing it to just get fast to some destination, might not be as good, but... that's unusual.)
Main downsides is indeed slightly slower (15-20% in my experience), BUT- that time is usually NOT wasted, due to potty/food/stretch breaks...! ...
and, it does require some extra pre-planning, moreso for destinations like National Parks away from charging... city to city, just put it in the car nav and go, no real planning needed, the nav will take care of you completely including automatically all charging stops.
I like to plan & understand my routes, destinations, landmarks, things to see, etc anyway before trips, so... just taking charging into account, is a little bit extra. I've hit EVERY national park in CA, including Death Valley, with no problems. (Saved me $100 in $9/gal park gas, free hotel charging in DV!)

    @KineticEV Рік тому +1

To a large degree people drive 25 to maybe 100 miles a day both ways. In that case that's easily handled by most EVs. If a person is into off roading and simply want the sound of an engine or the ability to shift gears then an EV isn't for them. But we're talking about a smaller segment of the population.
As a Model Y owner and a gas car owner I much more prefer the EV now. The wife is working from home and isn't into tech as I am since it's my career....so she has the gas car. Both are saving us money because she only needs to drive once or twice a week. I drive daily so I'm in the EV.
I'm often in discussions with people who've never been in an EV, never driven one but always feel as though they're qualified to tell you what it can't do and how impractical it is.....meanwhile on the Out Of Spec channel he has a new video up showing his Model 3 that's a few years old (pre heat pump) with well over 110k or 120k miles on the odometer...and says in the video how a colleague took the car on an 8000 mile road trip.
The takeaway is we need a better charging network or we need Tesla to open up theirs to everyone because we can see that it's easy, at least now in a Tesla, to take long trips or just drive local and have little to no issues.

Also keep this in mind everyone, let’s say it takes you 10 min to drive to the gas station to fuel up, 4 min to finish if there’s no line, 10 min back, so that’s let’s say 20-25 min every… let’s say 2 weeks, to fill up, that’s 8.67 hours PER YEAR saved when you get an electric car and charge at home, so if a long road trip takes 4 hours longer each way, you still saved time overall, just won’t feel like it cause you don’t realize you’re saving time in the first place, and 20 min twice a week for a year seems way faster than 8 hours longer in a day, but it’s not overall! In my personal case I’d have to fill like once a week so you can go ahead and double the time saved for me personally

I find the extra/longer stops to be refreshing. I prefer road tripping in an EV significantly more....and just try to plan on stuff to do while stopped...bathroom, food, shopping, a refreshing walk....Plus...if you can charge at home overall you spend less time going out of the way to fuel your car...Instead of having to wake up early, drive to a gas station, fuel up for 5 minutes (plus the 10 or more minutes to drive to the gas station) you just plug-in at night...so if you think about it...yes a road trip takes a little longer but you're not tripping 95% of the time (for most people) but overall you spend more time and fueling your ICE car than electric.

The travel route is a valid point but there will get better for Tesla owners are the supercharger network expands. People sometimes take odd routes for a reason. They might want to sight see, visit someone (or business) on the way that is not on the supercharger route, take a detour to avoid construction, bad weather, congestion, bad part of town etc. Some folks even like to turn their trip into a food tour by stopping at out of the way restaurants. There is a loss of freedom to do those things with restricted range and charging stations. More charging stations (that work) and longer range EVs will help.

    • @cgamiga
      @cgamiga Рік тому +2

For me, the very good Tesla nav actually HELPS on that... if you do know detours ahead of time, you can plan ahead & make sure ok on ABetterRoutePlanner etc... but while driving, I've taken detours just "for the heck of it" as we saw something interesting on the sat photo map, and trusted the nav planner and many supercharger stations to ensure we'll still make it OK. Many updates ago, the car nav added waypoints, so you can add stops directly into your gps trip planning.
There ARE highways and locations without charging... eg, Hwy 50 across Nevada, spots to national parks in Utah, that you do have to check and plan ahead, and maybe are too risky to take an EV... but, for vast majority of people, those type of trips are VERY rare and unusual, and... you can always rent a gas car for those.
Sadly, non-Tesla EV charge networks still seem to be suffering, and much riskier/less reliable ... needs to be greatly improved, for overall EV adoption nationwide, can't just be all Teslas..

    • @dorvinion

I have both. Model 3 AWD and Model Y Performance
The Y has a higher seating position that feels more like stepping in/out rather than climbing out, so older/stiffer/larger people would probably prefer a Y.
We are active outdoorsy type people so we are constantly going places to hike and bike and the Y has more room in the back for gear, and the trailer hitch sits higher so bike racks have more clearance.
Car seats fit better in the Y than the 3 because its slightly larger inside.
The glass roof on the Y is more spectacular (I'm never a passenger so I don't really get to enjoy it)
Rear view visibility is IMO very poor in the Y.
I like the looks of the 3 considerably more than the Y. IMO the Y looks like a 3 that ate too many twinkies.
The 3 drives more car like
In my specific case, the 3 is considerably more comfortable, but that is largely because of 18 inch wheels on the 3, vs 21 inch wheels/sport suspension on the MYP.
Dunno how the ride comfort of the 19" MY-AWD feels vs our 3.
Rear view visibility is much better.
Model 3 should be quieter than the Y because the enclosed trunk blocks some rear road noise.
I like our M3 more, but the MY is just more versatile for a family.
If I was going to buy a Tesla today, I would go with the MY-AWD
I would add the 3rd row seat for versatility. (not available on MY-P) With 2 young kids we would be able to put one in each row and reduce fighting
I would leave the wheels at 19" (the stock MY wheel covers are IMO ugly but for $200-400 you can get more attractive wheel covers)
Lastly, I would do this only because we have the M3 now - I'd add the $2000 speed boost to the Model Y so it matches our Model 3 w/o the speed boost.

For all around utility the 4Runner is the workhorse. Although my Model Y Performance and my 911 have similar straight line acceleration, as a sports car the 911 still rules because of lighter weight and better suspension. The Tesla is pretty sporty but gets out of shape pretty quickly during hard bumpy cornering. Not so for the 911. It stays planted and in control. I plan to keep the 911 long term even though as the years go by it will no doubt be surpassed by electric sports cars. Great info. Also I believe Tesla Model Y was the best selling car in Norway last month and for the full year 2022 sales overall. Not just best selling electric car but best selling of all car models regardless of fuel type.
Norway is not known for its mild winters, so yes, although the range can take a 15-25% hit in freezing weather compared to summer driving, this is something you take in your stride as the in-built route planner knows exactly what to do: warm your battery on the way to a Supercharger to ensure maximum charging speed and route you a Supercharger earlier than you'd need in summertime, etc. Newer models also all come with a heat pump for more efficient warming, and below very low temperatures a PTC heater provides extra reassurance.

Only difference is that I had an absolutely terrible experience with my Model Y and an insane amount of phantom braking, and am very glad to have sold it. Currently drive a 2019 Audi e-tron Prestige. Very different to the Tesla. Nowhere near as quick (but more than quick enough), and nowhere near the range, but super luxurious (more so than the Model X), comfortable, and highly adjustable in things like suspension, steering feel, seat side bolstering, etc. But I do know many very happy Model Y owners. NHTSA has gotten 460 complaints of excessive phantom braking and were investigating over 400k Teslas. There’s also a class action law suit in progress. If all of these folks required just recalibration, I have to believe Tesla would have advised them of that. I got very unlucky, and you got sort of lucky. Good friend of mine has a ‘22 MYP and a ‘22 M3P, and neither have had any phantom braking incidents. I don’t know what’s going on.

@@t1328 I hope there is a satisfactory solution. Since I made that comment I have had additional phantom breaking problems. Not as many as before but definitely more than zero. So far my solution has been to just not use it.

First changed from leaded to unleaded then to diesel (both supposed to save the planet - found later to have little impact in the real world ), now battery is the save all option - suppose it will be Hydrogen next !

Still for someone who tows - Tesla's range cuts IN HALF - that's not doable yet - I'm sure they will eventually figure it out
