"If you can get unstuck using traction boards than you weren't really stuck". Shots fired. Love it.
I mean if you dont have a winch or some buddies. Then you could be. This sentiment is mostly for western sandy mud. Out east we use these board paired with rocks to make clearance for axels and stuff. Not exactly a mud saving device for us just to get through without breaking crap.

So glad to hear him say that. I giggle every time I see a pavement princess Wrangler festooned with red tow hooks, a snorkel (and carpeting) and no winch with plastic traction mats mounted prominently on the outside. They are meant for sand and best in dry sand. Try using them when they are wet and it's like they are dipped in WD40. Totally useless.
Pozers will be pozers. Install a winch.
I spent almost 25 years working in the oil field and I have had locations that were made out of that mud, so I know exactly what you’re dealing with and how heavy your boots will be and how easy it will be to end up with more than just your boots covered in mud. Between the suction and the slipping if you’re not careful, you’ll end up, covered in mud to your shoulders. I certainly don’t miss those days.
Eastern Montana gumbo will stay on your tires making them taller and harder to get out of the stuff.

My guess is it is almost entirely clay. There is no silt and no sand in it.
Near my town here in Croatia is a forest in a swampy area. That mud is pure clay in some places and is very difficult to wash off, especially if it starts to dry on the Jeep.

Here's yet another fact you'll probably find very boring: The mud is likely bentonite. Like Matt said, it washed down from the surrounding hills. Highly absorbent, it's great for sealing the bottoms and inner faces of dams as it doesn't allow moisture to flow through it. Also, when we drill holes in the Earth below the water table, a slurry of bentonite is used to seal the inside of the boring to prevent collapse allowing us to obtain soil samples below the water line. Vernal pools are smaller versions of what you're in here. I've had a 16,000 lb. drill rig stuck a couple times. It is nasty, nasty stuff. A full day of bull dozing, winch lines, and struggling got it out. Where were you when I needed you? lol (It was in the early '80s)
Bentonite has great healing properties. It's absorptive property assists the elimination of difficult-to-release toxins. Mud baths, facials, poultices, and even taken internally (in very small amounts, with deactivated charcoal and a laxative) to detox the alimentary canal/intestine.
I used to be in the oil field in the 90's, Bentonite, Trade name WYOBEN (wyoming bentonite) was the base gel for all water based mud (drilling fluid). We would make gel water, and add some sort of caustic, sometime sodium hydroxide, sometimes potassium hydroxide to expand the gel. Then add weight material. sodium , Barium sulfate, hematite or whatever was called for. Point is, yeah thats thick, sticky stuff.
As I love nonsense, trivia, geology, hydrology, and nonsensology, this thread has me totally geeking out. 😵💫

I think a good running joke is giving the weather each video, despite us all knowing that Matt will have the same outfit on, whether it’s in the summer dunes, or if he’s on a snowy mountain.

I saw him pull the zip ties from the top of the package. But there's a better way. If you put a hole in the middle of the package you can pull them out and then have them not spill out once your done. The more you know. 😊

If you're out in the boonies and need to re-use a zip tie, you can unlock one with a knifepoint or small screwdriver wedged under the latching mechanism

the mud pit was the first time that i've seen matt and crew trying their darndest to stay clean.
SUGGESTION: if you want to prolong the winch line life, pressure wash the most wearing parts(first few meters, also those little loop thingies) after it gets pretty dirty or even muddy. The tests were made on climbing ropes, making two equally used ropes dirty, and then washing one of them- both lines would enter repeatable cycles of simulated use. The rope, which was cleaned before the test, surprisingly lasted more than double the number of cycles of the dirty rope. The idea behind it, lots of accumulated dirt starts to behave like sandpaper not only on the surface when rubbing against something but also inside between the stretching and bending strands.
Same thing all the lines on a sailboat. Very similar to static climbing ropes, but constantly getting salt water spray/mist if you are coastal. The salt grains are perfect little buzzsaws that cut the internal fibers. Washing them out saves lots of pricey "rope".
I'm pretty sure he knows because it's pretty common knowledge when you one is around these kinds of forces and working conditions of synthetic rope. Especially because he uses them for a business but not hating on your comment, always good to teach other readers.
lol , one episode a while ago they tried a whole bunch of ' expert ' tips for washing ropes & straps .. pretty sure these guys know what their doing on that dept
True story. We used to try to clean and flex our dynamic ropes in the fire dept when they got dirty. You can never get 100% but you are guaranteed to get a lot of dirt in between the strands and the Kern if you are doing cliff rescues and recoveries.
@@lyfandeth That's kind of obvious on mud, but never actually thought salt would have the same effect. I think it's because the salt gets crystallized only when the water evaporates from the ropes, so you don't really see the salt depositing in there. Kind of "out of sight, out of mind" situation.
On that note, is there anything to let you know when the ropes should be washed, or is it just something you intuitively learn along the way? That is supposing you don't wash them after every sail.
Using the drone to scout for the customer is a big brain move
This call may have been an exception, but the fact that drone flights are illegal over most of Utah is only the first reason that using drones to find the customer is generally impractical.
Hey Matt! You'll definitely want to apply some leather conditioner to your boots after you wash them, and wash them with Saddle Soap! The best method I've found once boots once my boots get muddy (granted, not with Utah clay, but with Cascades clay), is to use Saddle Soap and a brush small enough to swirl inside the tin -- just like lathering up for a shave! After you apply the lather (and really scrub with this stuff), wipe it off with a clean dry towel (and repeat if necessary). Let the boots dry for 10 to 20 minutes, then apply some leather conditioner, boot cream, or whatever will rehydrate the leather, so that it doesn't crack. Love watching you guys!
I love that first rescue. I know Matt hates mud as he says it just about every mud rescue Team MORR has. Here in SoCal we yearn for soft sticky mud. We love to play in mud. We’ve played in red clay and it is very sticky. We spray WD40 on the undercarriage prior to playing in the mud at times when we remember to keep suspension as clean as possible. We have seen axles, and bodies ripped from the chassis in heavy mud. When we have a say so, we opt for the winch instead but some insist on dead pulling a stuck truck. Parts fly and give everyone a show. Anyhow, great recoveries and thanks for sharing as always.

Matt is probably correct that the southwest in general has something about the mud. Think about all the ancient dwellings that are still standing after hundreds or even a thousand years: Mesa Verde, Chaco Canyon, Hovenweep, etc. They were built with stone and mud and have lasted all these years. Pretty amazing! And highly recommended places to visit for those of you who haven't been to the southwest before.

Matt is pretty much right about traction boards but I still use them. When I get to a point where I can't move I use them before I dig deep holes. I use them before I'm stuck so I don't get suck.

I realize conditions are different in other locations, but what works for me is white kitchen plastic garbage bags over my boots. The mud doesn't seem to stick to the smooth plastic. Plus, clean up is much easier. Stay safe.
Just found your channel a few days ago and have been binge watching. I particularly like the nearly complete lack of profanity - just nice people doing good things. Very cool. You know what's funny... is growing up we had the same exact shop sink. You don't realize how essential they are for a garage/shop until you don't have one.
I've been logging in western Oregon mud since I was sixteen. There's one of the reasons why we wear lace up boots while logging and fighting forest fires. That stuff will grab and not let go.
Speaking of Utah clay, that stuff is great for throwing pots. My wife is Western Shoshone and when visiting family down in that country she fills my rig with about a ton of clay, fires it in small thin blocks and grids it up fine and ads water and presto! She says its some of the best clay in the world. I just showed her this video and I guess we're heading to your part of the world next spring. I want to stop in and meet Ed. Get some desert prospecting tips.
I've spent some time in the mud in Appalachia, and I agree about the laces comment. I can't imagine wearing slip on boots or just shoes in the mud.

Morning Matt and the Morr crew! As a part time four wheeler and former river running four wheeler I never understand why anyone would head for mud. Mud is endless fun (hic) and no end of clean up and wash downs seems to ever get rid of it. Years later you take a part off a vehicle and what else there is dried mud .... from that one time way back!
Mud is a challenge and some people like the challenge, also some grown men like to act like toddlers and some toddlers like to stomp through puddles🤷♂️😂
You say you never understand why anyone heads for mud and then you give the reason. Mud is endless fun. In that moment that's all that matters. There may be some regrets later but those don't matter or stop you from doing it again because it was fun.
I will agree but with purpose built or minimum vehicles with tires and frame better suited then a typical primarily a car with street tires. That adds a bit to much "fun". @@grimsoul0

I’ve been in scenarios where there is no moving (deep snow, the dry granular stuff that doesn’t stick to anything) but you can get on top of traction boards and creep ahead 2ft at a time. It took forever and with a second vehicle or a winch you could move way quicker, but you could use traction boards repeatedly to get out.
Matt’s traction board idea is probably true in sand and mud and rocks though.

As a relatively new Hurricane resident, these vids are valuable educating me to what is around.
I've lived in the southwest for 26 years and any time it gets muddy I stick to pavement. Just the cleanup is a pain, let alone the stuck risk.
One hour of fun is 4 hours of cleaning😂. We got lots of mud here and that's the ratio we have to accept

Matt, you may not believe this, but they had MUD like this in I Corps section of Vietnam back when I was there in 1968-1970. Red dust in the summer & slick red mud in monsoon season. Greetings from the Old Jarhead in WNC
There are different types of clay for sure, but largely the clay deposits are composed of a mixture sand, silt, and clay. The more clay you have and the stickier it becomes. Silt deposits can look a lot like clay and will contain some clay, but will not be as sticky as a clay deposit. Gray clays can contain more organic matter, but you don't see that in red clays. The red color indicates oxidation and that process burns off the organic matter. There is a big difference in what contains 35% clay and what contains 80% clay! I'd say that clay deposit just has more clay in it! Somewhere there is an engineering report for the dam that details the clay content.
One of the other commenters says it was probably bentonite.
Yes ... I saw that and there is no shortage of bentonite in Utah, but clay deposits of this type are rarely just one clay. Most likely there is some bentonite, illite, kaolinite, and others. Bentonite is typically a light colored clay and the closer you get to the volcanic deposits the more bentonite you are going to find, but once you get out into the wide flats the more the mixed clay mineralogy you find.@@TheRealTburt
As the video showed, straight clay mud is a really good way to have a really bad time really fast. I’ve seen these conditions outside Utah, but always in a man made excavation site like the borrow pit they were in for this recovery. If a large exposed clay seam is something that can occur in nature I haven’t seen/heard of it. Im actually kind of surprised the excavationg contractors didn’t have to push the overburden back over the top of the exposed clay when finished digging out what they needed for the reservoir .
Wyoming is covered in an exposed clay seam called bettonite! When it rains you stay on the pavement.
Here in Colorado we get seams of it, completely exposed and on the surface. Just part of living in the southwest, seen it in Utah as well.

You can plug up the pipes or dry well or sewage tank. Try to use a outside garden hose. Just saying! I can't leave Tom Tom out of this, you're a good man. You may be right that if traction boards got you out, you were not really stuck in the first place. But here in Australia they're very popular because they are easy to use and usually get you unstuck fairly quickly with less risk of making matters worse. Pretty much every vehicle overlanding in the outback will carry them for that reason.
Great in sand to get back on top after you dig through. Sometimes you have to walk back to get them because you can't risk loosing momentum stopping to pick them up.

@@NoNORADon911 I was told to attach ropes to traction boards and pull-pal anchors so that you can get them back out of the sand after a recovery.
@@azmax623 Yep just make sure the rope is strong enough and that you tie the rope to the back of the traction boards. If they are buried in this mud clay though it might break the rope or tear out of the hole on the boards.

I worked in a chalk quarry - driving an old CAT D6 - and that was dusty and bright like a white desert until it _rained_ ! Then it was the stickiest slimy mud. EVERYTHING was damp in the shade and winters were like trench warfare. It destroyed everything, boots lasted about 6 months if you were lucky!
A 20 gallon pressurized fresh water tank with a spray nozzle charged by the air system in the wrecker would be very helpful on recoveries like this. Plus you would have drinking water on board for the crew and the dogs for those unexpected extended recoveries in the summer months.

One would think it’s not too hard to plan ahead. Put some hip waders and a tarp to lay on in each vehicle.
Cardboard is good too. Helps cushion you from rocks.
