Making jesmonite / forton mg terrazzo style countertops

- Two countertops were cast for a pair of counters for Candied bakery in Spotswood. The process is the same as the shelves (see my other videos!) but at a much larger scale.
It was all hands on deck for the pours with four of us working on mixing, spreading and clamping as quickly as we can; the open time is around ~30 minutes before the mixtures begins to harden.

Thanks so much EL JAMA! Yes the counters required quite a lot when compared to a smaller craft project but we used 19mm (3/4") cores so when you minus that from the full thickness of 25mm (1") the Jesmonite is only 6mm (1/4") thick :)

I was wondering if I could ask a bit of advice? I’m wanting to make myself a terrazzo worktop for my bathroom vanity. Would acc100 be the best option to go for and can I just use the jesmonite sealant or do you know if I’d need anything special to waterproof it? Thanks so much for your time. Have a lovely day 😊
Hi Holly, thanks for the compliment! Yes you'd definitely want to seal the Jesmonite if using in a wet area as it is quite porous. After extensive testing with this project, personally I wouldn't recommend using Jesmonite for a worktop or any high traffic / wet areas. Whilst the shelves have held up very well, we ended up re-making the countertops out of HDPE plastic to simulate Jesmonite, video here: ua-cam.com/video/GxOX-ceu3Xc/v-deo.html
Hi Very creative of you well done! hoping i can get some advice can the cured jesmonite or alternative similar products be machined with a cnc and also cut using power tools table saw etc or would you say its very fragile. also how do you seal the products can water based polyurethane work ? I've got many ideas but theres a-lot of info out there that is not making sense to me. Thanks and keep going its so cool stay creative!
Hi Karim, yes you can use woodworking tools like routers, drills and circular saws to cut the material. Sealing is tricky however and we ended up going with a different approach (see end of video). Jesmonite does have some different product with different compositions so it'd be best to get your hands on small quantities and do proof of concept tests before committing to a large pour. Hope that helps :)
I noticed you sandwich a board in between how well does this stick over time does it crack away?
Hi Tara, I routed some grooves in the face of the board to help the Jesmonite 'key in' to the surface if that makes sense - so far has been holding well :)

Thanks Annelies, due to a Jesmonite shortage in Australia we ended up going with a similar gypsum acrylic composite product called Forton MG :)
love it! I've been wondering, is it possible to pour a floor with jesmonite?
Hi Steffi, anything is possible but I personally wouldn't recommend it - we had to replace the tops featured in this video as we had issues with staining; link in comments. If you're going for this look terrazzo would be a much better option as it is more durable!

Hi Joey, no we didn't as the polypropylene sheet and formply worked great for us as is. Hope that helps!

@@Furnitecture Yes I saw the HDPE update. I have found a lady called Olivia Aspinall in the UK who seems to be making a great business. Have a look to see how she cracked the staining issue, I have actually asked her re maintenance so I will see what she says....

can i make a showertray with it?
