Hi Max, great work, I love how you kept going on the diagnosis to understand the problem.
Guess I’ll be buying a new part for my Triton or doing some testing to get rid of that expensive light!

For sure, it's no use being a parts changer if they are not needed. That's why I test so much - to make as sure a I can be with the data provided to replace the correct part only. Also you need to try and figure why the part failed in the beginning.

Thanks Max. I had an MN triton, we cleaned the EGR and intake. still had the P0403 and 2413 codes code up. EGR wasn't that bad before, valve works very free after clean, the spring would just closed. but after watching your video, we found that we had 0% EGR duty command and 99.2% error. So I hooked the 12v up to the motor to see if it went in and out by itself, off the EGR valve. Went in and out. then we mounted back to the valve , we could hear it operating the valve ( plug disconnected) . Then we plugged it back in, started the ute, the Cheap EML327 scan adaptor with Car Scanner app showed the duty cycle working 67%, no error. thanks, I understand a little more.

Thanks for your feedback Gerard. Just like you, I've always liked to pull things apart to see how they work and what failed.
Good idea on putting parts in description.
I haven't used the scope enough to properly review it, but will give an opinion in future videos. It's pretty good for the price & once you sort out the navigation, quite useful.

@@rogerwhite2653 Hey Roger, welcome to the channel.
I find electrical repairs and testing both frustrating and satisfying. When you are trying to diagnose something difficult and it doesn't make sense, you can end up ripping out your hair. But, if you slow down and think about what is actually working, move forward to find the fault, that can be the most satisfying part of the repair.
      Thanks for your comments. 😁

i enjoyed watching your video. i have the same P2413 error on my obd2 code reader on my SUV Mitsubishi Montero 4D56 diesel. there is black smoke on the exhaust during quick accelaration and noticed higher fuel consumption. check engine indicator goes on and off for several days apart. I try to pull out the EGR motor and connect it to a 12V PWM DC motor controller to check its action. I dont have a pulse generator to simulate ECU control voltage. I learned a lot from you video. I plan to buy an economical full systems scanner, what brand and model do your recommend for Mitsubishi / asian/japanese cars. i dont have auto shop. im looking at Ancel FX4000 or X6
Do I need to have bi-directional active test option on the scanner to have a complete diagnosis and confirm the failing component of my car? or a full systems scanner is just enough for a hobbyist like me. thanks. Pls keep doing more videos to help everyone.God Bless you and your family.

Hey Francis, I'm glad you are getting something from the videos!
Obviously with scan tools, you get what you pay for.
A few things to keep in mind. You must make sure the software that they load into the tool will cover the vehicles you require. Some companies get you to pay for updates each year.
I would ask if the tool is bi-directional as that is a crucial feature that helps diagnose faults quickly.
I don't know the brand Ancel, so I really can't comment. Also, I don't know what your specific needs are for a scan tool, so it is a little hard to give advice.
Read reviews on the tool before you buy.
I hope that helps a little

I tried to move the egr to 50 or 100% sending the command using diagnosis and its not moving. The egr never moves except if i force it with my hand to open. In that case the egr is returning to close when you turn ignition off. Is the only situation where the egr moves.

Did you carry out all the tests shown in the video? Is there a large amount of carbon built up in the intake system? When the EGR valve is activated, can you see the MAF reading change in live data? Does it have any exhaust leaks? Is the air filter clean?

Hi Max, I swapped the old EGR with a brand new one. Cleared all codes, when i try an active test to set EGR to 100%, I can feel there is no movement with the EGR motor, EGR stays at 0% and it throws this code ? What do you think ? Also putting 12v to the correct pins on the EGR opens and closes the valve no issues.

    • @MiracleMAX
      @MiracleMAX  3 місяці тому

So did you replace the EGR valve because of a code? Have you checked for 5 volts, tested ground and varying voltage at the signal wire? Have you tested it at the PCM?

    • @Dru180sx
      @Dru180sx 3 місяці тому

Hi Max, thanks for your reply, I replaced the EGR as I was getting P4213, after a clean the old EGR motor did not actuate with 12v applied to neg and pos pins, new EGR worked fine.
Update : After I cleared the codes, and de-energised the car, the new EGR Position is at 65% after idling for a few seconds (Engine at operating temp), however, EGR ERR value is eratically fluctuating anywhere from -70% to 69%. After a 3min test drive, same P4213 code pops up, and both EGR values are back to 0%
MAF g/s reading is also eracticlly fluctuating from 19.00 to 29.00 g/s on idle, and CAT temp has a static value of 22 degrees Celsius... Im guessing dirty MAF and blocked CAT ? The turbo had a history of oil leaks into compression housing(now fixed), which left heaps of engine oil in the intercooler & in the piping on hot and cold side (now cleaned), any thoughts?
      Much appreciated!

    • @MiracleMAX
      @MiracleMAX  3 місяці тому +1

@@Dru180sx Does yours have a CAT or are your referring to a DPF? Carbon buildup can cause this issue. It is strange that the MAF is reading this way. Is it clean? The MAF reading will change with the EGR actuating, therefore changing the reading, however it should not be erratic. Temp sensors can play up. Can you disconnect one and see if it reads -40 degrees on the scan tool? Are the EGR readings at the actual valve consistent with what you are seeing on the scan tool? If you had oil leaks through the intake system, it is possible that you have carbon buildup that must be removed. Have you carried out a smoke machine test to see if there are any intake vacuum leaks?

Mine has a CAT. It's the 2011 MN model. I'll clean the MAF, and check the intake for vacuum leaks, and clean the temp sensors, including EGT sensor, I think is a good start to see if I can rectify the MAF readings... than a EGR Relearn. See how she goes. Thanks again mate.

I have an old egr. When i drive it with 12volts.. the valve does not fully open.. is the motor already broken?

So what issues are you having with the vehicle? Do you have a fault code to work with? How many kilometres has the engine done?
Are the target values the same as the actual values?

@@neiljohntolentino6365 The EGR valve is driven by duty cycle. However when you put 12 volts to it, it should open and when the wires are reversed, it should close.

Excellent video. With this information I hope to solve my P2413 on a 3.2l Shogun/Pajero. I am interested in your function generator. I have built various gadgets to help me solve other real world problems and would like to build one like yours. Have you a link to your solution?

      Hey Paul,
I'm glad you got some help from this video. If you subscribe, you won't miss out on any future related videos.
Here is another video where I used the function generator to diagnose an ignition coil.

@@MiracleMAX Thanks. Subscribed! I lifted my EGR and found 6.4ohms across the servo motor. Applied 12v across the yellow and purple pins and got crisp movement out and back (with mechanical valve coupled so physical resistance probably not an issue). With unit removed from loom I measured (at connector, ignition on, from connector pin to vehicle ground) G pin1 5v, Br pin 2 9.3v, Bl pin 3 9.5v, Y pin 4 9.4v and Purple pin 6 9.4v. I failed to get a reading with loom connector fixed to valve motor as the seal between loom wires and connector pins is sealed and water tight. I set up mobile phone on video record, cleared codes on OBD-II tool and turned ignition on, waited, off and saw valve pop open/closed and then the unit, without valve movement, heard electro/mechanical pulses that had no visible effect, but may have been an attempt to cycle the valve to open and closed several times (a cycle I've seen reported on other forums), no movement. I'm left wondering whether the motor for the valve is faulty, or the wiring to the value faulty. Any thoughts? I wish I had your function generator to exercise the motor/valve properly.

      @@ibslpaul Hey Paul,
      Has your code come back?
The fault code P2413 EGR System Performance, can mean a range of problems, not just the EGR itself.
Not sure if you have seen this video relating to the same code.
      ua-cam.com/video/nlErGRhRFMA/v-deo.html&ab_channel=MiracleMAX
How many Kms has the vehicle done?
The EGR valve will mechanically wear and then put extra stress on the motor, causing the fault code. Or, carbon build-up can create faults as well.
If you have cleared the code, then the EGR will work again. As shown in the above video, these vehicles will not allow you to do activations until the code is cleared.
Just keep in mind, that this is just a motor with a potentiometer attached, so the ECU knows where the valve is at the time.
I show you further testing in this other video I have given the link for.
It's best to leave the EGR connected to get correct voltage readings as the ECU may run a bias voltage or other strange things may happen. Just use some dress making pins to carefully go past the weather seals to back-probe the connector. You can see I have used some in the linked video.
Here's a link to some information that might help

Check out that video - it might give you some more direction in your testing process.

@@MiracleMAX Thanks. My engine is the Pajero 3.2 DiD, 200,000Kms, 2012. I studied the info via the links you kindly sent. I was able to fit dress pins to connector and after clearing codes could see a change in the output voltage from the potentiometer 0.8v closed to just under 5v fully opened (manually moved). Bolted EGR back in position. Ran a live recording on my scanner and noted once engine warm the EGR Command could be seen to vary the EGR Error % seen to grow on command change and quickly drop to 0% as the movement matched the commanded position. It operated at tick over for about 5 mins before the P2413 was thrown. I have the live recording and a freeze frame. Nothing jumps out in the various readings leading up to and immediately after the code being thrown. Once thrown the Commanded and Error stay at 0%. I noted that my scanner has another monitor feature which provided the following information: EGR Monitor Bank 1 (title) followed by a list of parameters and settings, Component ID: $01; Limit Type: Min/Max; Test Value: 0.00mg/stk; Minimum Limit: 655.35mg/stk; Maximum Limit: 655.35mg/stk; Status: Fail. Is this an indication of a MAP/MAT sensor error? I think this is my best lead at present.
I have cleaned the valve in past and recently - no play in the value and smooth to move. I have cleaned the pipe from EGR to Manifold. I have not removed and cleaned the manifold and wonder if the ECU is clever enough to identify flow problems if manifold is badly gummed up? It's such a big job to remove the manifold. I have a tin of the Wynns EGR cleaner so may give that a go tomorrow. Any thoughts or guidance on next diagnostic step most appreciated.

      @@ibslpaul Hey Paul,
As you saw in the video, I have used Wynns EGR cleaner with a certain amount of success. These engines suffer heaps from carbon build up. At 200,000 Km, I'm sure there is a fair amount of carbon build up.
Just keep in mind that the EGR valve is only part of the intake and exhaust system in the EGR system. If any part of this path is blocked, then the EGR system will log a code.
If you are concerned about if you have a faulty MAF sensor, check out in live data what your readings are at idle and about 2000 RPM.
