Catching A Madman: tracking down Sydney's family court bomber | 7NEWS Spotlight

  • For more than three decades, the seven crimes known as the Family Court Murders remained the worst series of unsolved serial killings in Australian criminal history.
Between 1980 and 1985, four people were murdered and dozens critically injured in a cruel five-year reign of terror across Sydney, aimed at the very heart of the country’s judicial system. Five bombings and multiple shootings targeting judges of the Family Court of Australia, their families, a lawyer and innocent members of the public.
There was only ever one prime suspect linked to all seven crimes but despite years of surveillance he was never charged. Leonard Warwick - ex-army, ex-fireman, crack shooter and expert ‘bushie’ - thought he was invincible, that he’d got away with murder.
In 2013, a major Seven investigation, led by award-winning journalist Ross Coulthart, would blow the case wide open. For the very first time in more than a quarter of a century, all the main witnesses who until that point had been too afraid to speak out, including Warwick’s daughter and ex-wife, would describe the events that rocked Australia.
Coulthart’s forensic investigation would put the horrific murders and bombings back in the public focus - and in the spotlight of authorities.
Unknown to Warwick, and long forgotten by police, was the crucial mistake that would bring him down. Buried deep in a box of archived evidence, Warwick’s blood collected from one of the bomb sites that would be analysed using advanced DNA technology.
Now, as Leonard Warwick is sentenced for his crimes, Coulthart returns to the most dangerous story of his career with the next chapter and major new development in this ground-breaking investigation - was there another victim?

Under 116 of the Constitution no test will be allowed if someone is a Muslim or not and one would simply opt for a Sharia court to hear their family matters. What is wrong with that? I was a police officer at Gosford when these bombings were occurring. Many of the judges had holiday homes on the central coast and they saw it as a haven. For a small office it was a huge task. Some judges and the wives were lovely, providing food and somewhere comfortable to sit, for up to 12hours, whilst regularly checking on our wellbeing. Others viewed us as the hired help, wanting us to run errands, walk dogs, and watch children. The term "high maintenance" was coined for them, Good job to put Warwick away.

Members will disconnect from mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and children if they are ordered to by their Kingdom Hall leadership. I doubt there was one guy who committed this bombing, probably a group of men which would mean conspiracy and terrorism was occurring in Australia. The Australian government wanted to blame it all on one guy because it’s easier and cleaner than prosecuting a group of bombers.

It wasn't about solving who it was. That's what they said at the start of the video. It was about the police not having enough evidence to take him to court and for him to receive a guilty verdict. It was only until DNA analysis technology came that they had solid evidence to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

I thought it was only later that replication techniques evolved that needed only a fractional amount and it was this that was the big deal in earlier cases, needing a relatively large sample. Then there's the whole cross-contamination deal with earliest samples which could provide a loophole.
I get your point but can also see why they waited, what with double jeopardy meaning no second bites at the cherry. Pretty unsatisfying though.
