Our septic is 40 years old. We just had a check today and we only have about 50% sludge. We’ve been there for 30 years and have never pumped it. But we also have never put toilet paper down the toilet. The guy was actually pretty surprised that the tank was as old as it was without any issues all these years. And only reason why we called him was to just do a pump out because we’re getting ready to sell the place there was no issues with it.
In 1993 they likely would have used those old white pipes. I am not sure when those half round units first came about. Depending on the tank type and condition a replacement field could be put in for a low cost. When I build my new house I intend to put in 2 systems, Gray water and black water systems. Which will all go to the same field. Which will be big enough. A black water and gray water system should make it last far longer between pumps and should be far less channgles. I also intend to install a grease trap in the gray water system.
Whoever does this should be getting paid ALOT of money. I could never. Thank you to all those people out there that do the necessary jobs no one wants to do!

There are too many rural communities that are miles away from water treatment plants so there will always be septic systems. Keep it clean and you'll never have a backup. Can't say that about municipal systems; sometimes all it takes is some rains and stupid people throwing wipes to backup everything behind you.
I can agree that as an assistant plumber it smells horrible and the most common thing found is paper towels, wipes, and condoms with other hygiene products.
fun fact: there is peole who has fallen in large industrial septic tanks, got stuck in the... "brownie batter" and slowly sink and drown in it, their last moments was of their mouth and nose filling with... that.
