This vid was a great find. I bought a starter kit online. Studs, punches etc. but there were no instructions with it! I had no clue as to what component fit with what or where to use the punches etc. This vid sorted me out. So thank you so much for your time in making it. I'm very grateful. I would have been well stuck without this instructional video. All the best.
I've already tried setting snap fasteners. It was crooked and now I know, from this video how to do the male female on each end, and to put through the leather first. Thank you. I definitely need more practice.
Annette, we have some large hole spacers with loops that can be riveted to leather, and might be useful for what you're thinking about doing. Take a look on our webstore* and look for our Beaded 10mm w/Loop, part # 94-5747. (* Do a web search for "TierraCast webstore". Unfortunately, we cannot embed links in a comment here.) If you think it will work, ask for the part at your local bead store or check online suppliers. Have fun!
I have a dress that I made, kind of a vintage western theme, and I want to put these snaps on. The dress is looking great but I'm really worried about messing it up because I haven't actually tried putting these on; I know I will need to practice beforehand. Do you have any tips that might help? I really don't want to mess up my project. Thanks.
Our experience with snaps is not in-depth. While we do produce the glue on snap caps, we do not produce snaps themselves, and our practical experience was limited to learning to set them in leather strap as we shared in the video. I would suggest your local fabric store or sewing machine shop for more help. And I would definitely practice! Good luck - I hope your dress turns out great! - Tracy
Great video. I just started using leather and snaps, but I'm unsure what am I doing incorrect? My leather is 12mm flat about 1-1.9mm thick and the snaps I am using are the line 20 fastener 12mm cap and 4.5mm snap. I am using a chasing hammer and all the correct tools, I think? Please, any help is greatly appreciated.
Hi there, I have a project I want to work, and this is the closest I've come so far to finding a way to do it. I'm trying to find a way to add a domed piece of metal to a leather belt. Something similar to a domed or dapped coin. Do you know of any techniques where i might be able to secure it to the leather without ruining the domed shape? Thanks!
Hm. Domed components are tricky. We have another video here ua-cam.com/video/7yFm0zO981E/v-deo.html that might help, but please note that our videos are specific to our tools. This video may also be useful ua-cam.com/video/ML9O4ySAzcEH/v-deo.htmlope these are helpful - good luck!
We have not worked with conchos, but did a search for "how to attach a concho" and found many resources including an informative video here binged.it/2xIUau6. It may help you decide if it would work for your project. Good luck!
Hello , and thank you for this very usefull guide. I would have a question. I would like to add and replace spring snap fastener on a coat made in Cordura 500 fabric. I'm having trouble finding the right size for my snaps as i don't know on what part of the buton i should take measurements to determine what size to order ? Which one should i take te measure from upper/lower female/male ? Could you please help me with this issue ? Thanks
***** - Hello Alexis - the size of a snap is the measurement of the cap. Most common sizes are Ligne (Line) 20 which measures 12.5mm (1/2") and Ligne 24 (15mm, 5/8"), but there are many other sizes. Can you take the coat to a fabric store and get advice from the staff there?
could you please help- I know you talked about leather but I need to install a snap rivet on a newsboy cap (male & female) I don't know what tool will be the best because I need it to go through the strurdy plastic (and subsequent cloth) used for the visor..i don't want to struggle to do this so which tool would be most effective, also, I need to install those copper rivets you find on levis 501 jeans (typically found around the coin pocket of these jeans). Could I buy ONE machine that will work for both projects? thanks
We're a jewelry component manufacturer so our experience in rivet and snap setting is fairly limited to jewelry making with our leather and leather findings. That said, I imagine leather hole punching pliers and the snap setting process described in the video would work for the cap, but I don't have any experience with the jean rivets. If you have a local leather shop they may be able to help you. Good luck! :)
I have compression rivets but when I try to set them, the post flattens and the rivets are not in line with each other. Are compression rivets designed to squash down ?
Our smallest compression rivet is what we call our 4mm Compression Rivet. The length of the post is 5mm, the diameter of the tube on the cap is 2.4mm (also the approx. size of the holes you'll need), and the diameter of the dome of the cap is 4mm. :)
Absolutely. There are many online retailers that sell our rivets. Do a web search for "tierracast leather and rivets" and try any of the jewelry supply websites that come up. If you are a wholesale purchaser, try Beadmaster.com or Beadsmith.com.

Hello Ellie - Sorry for the delay. We were out of the office e for a trade show. Are your snaps not setting properly?
Can you super glue a rivet metal cap on a metal pin on a broken handbag strap ?

Hey there, i'm just wondering if it would be possible to use a concho as a snap button, any thoughts as to why I couldn't?

If the post is too long it will fold crooked. If the setting tool is crooked it will also fold crooked. Try shorter post lengths.
Really cool video! Compression rivets and snaps make life easier! I will share on my blog - The Beading Gem's Journal.
Thanks, Pearl!
