    I am a drummer.I really enjoyed these monologues & the group interactions in a virtual a room full of great bassists-was never expecting to stay up so late tonight but got into it, committed, and hung onto every word. When I came up in my late teens in New York, Jaco was part of the scene downtown, and I got to sit in with him on percussion a few times (he loved our samba band, Grupo Batucada).
    He was already pretty far gone, but the genius power, that fire, was still in his belly.

    🎉That was cool, hearing the stories, Jaco effected and touched many peoples lives, aside from the millions of fans, he was respected by all the musicians that knew of him, yes there are outlandish stories, pre and post his difficulties, but don’t judge the man by what people say, just put on his debut album and be awed by the genius of Jaco… thank you to all that contributed.

    Thank you for this excellent Jaco tribute. I thought in the beginning why isn't Pat Metheny here and then you mention him at the end that he may be coming next month for another tribute to Jaco. Love it!👌🎵🎶🎶
    Cannot put into words how special this show is to me. You get the youtube award of the year.🏆

    As a fan, as a human, I’m deeply grateful to John for his honest yet gracious appraisal of what had to have been difficult situations with Jaco. He was a near-magical talent harshly impacted by bipolar illness which was not known to most. Many witnessed the mania half of the illness, very few the depression. It was something we shared, and privately helped each other with.
    The “world’s greatest” was actually a gag to him, a nerve settler. I don’t know anyone who didn’t hear it once. So, thank you, John.

    Thank you so much for posting this! I was born in the early 70s and it sucks to have missed all of these guys during their early years. I would have loooooooooved to see Weather Report during the Jaco years. Just listening to their stories though is so entertaining.

    This was such great conversation and I had to pause many time times to absorb it all… i had tears when Victor Bailey was telling his story with Jaco’s friendship… being a longtime worshipper of him, this stories resonated with me on so much deeper levels, especially hearing from ALL OF MY FAVORITE musicians in this podcast, that I admired dearly speaking in so much respect and personal experiences knowing Jaco… this had impacted me on such profound and deeper way, it was like discovering Jaco as a PERSON and fellow musician that I never ever imagined: I RE-discovered Jaco on whole new different way and thank you ALL , gentlemen!!! I mean it, THANK YOU for this amazing personal stories and your appreciation for TRUE GENIUS that they had privilege to know personally and share lives with him… I bow down to ALL OF YOU, and Preston to make this happen…I mean it!

    Alphonso Johnson was not fired from Weather Report. He announced he was leaving because he wanted to join the newly forming George Duke/Billy Cobham band in mid 1975, although yes, it is true that seeing how amazed Zawinul was by Jaco, Alphonso's decision was hastened to move on from WR. Most of the Black Market record had been completed by mid 1975 with Alphonso on 90% of the record. Upon Johnson voicing his desire to join Duke/Cobham, and with at least one Zawinul tune left to record for the Black Market record, Zawinul brought Jaco in to play on "Cannonball," a ballad that Zawinul had written as a homage to the recently deceased Cannonball Adderley. Zawinul was approached initially by Jaco after a Weather Report gig in Miami in the summer of 1975. The next day, Jaco came to zawinul's hotel room at Zawinul's invitation and played him the demos for what would eventually become Jaco's debut record. These demos, which are not the debut record itself, were released in 2014 as "Modern American Music.... Period! The Criteria Sessions recorded in 1974, approximately a year before Zawinul and Jaco meet.

      Can't believe McLaughlin talking that nonsense. Zawinul was interviewed about this and it's on UA-cam. In his words, Alphonse Johnson was a fantastic bass player. So he told Jaco he didn't need a bass player.

    • @vbassone
      @vbassone 4 місяці тому

      @@reidwhitton6248 EXACTLY! Al Johnson was not fired. Johnson realized that Zawinul was very interested in Jaco to say the least, and he saw that it would be a good move for him to move on to the Duke/Cobham band at that time, a band that Johnson really and genuinely wanted to join anyway.

    • @vbassone
      @vbassone 4 місяці тому

      And it should also be clearly stated; Al Johnson was playing fretless bass guitar in Weather Report BEFORE Jaco Pastorius!!! Johnson plays FRETLESS on records as early as Mysterious Traveller which is 1974, almost two years before Jaco was ever a member of Weather Report.Johnson also played fretless consistently, not exclusively because he also played fretted bass guitar, LIVE with Weather Report during his entire tenure with the band which began in late 1973/early 1974. It boggles my mind that this is not common knowledge.

    John McCloughlin got his Jaco and Jo Zawinul Weather Report story wrong, Jaco introduced himself to Jo after a concert in Miami, and he met with Jo at his hotel the next day gave him a tape, and arranged a rehearsal with the band, Jaco also got Peter Erskine in the band after Akuna left. Alphonso Johnson had already planned to leave Weather Report. It's not like they got rid of him to have Jaco in the band. Tony Williams did recommend him to Jo, on top of that after meeting and playing with him in New York

  • @vbassone
    @vbassone 2 роки тому

    Jaco's first RECORDED take of "Cannonball" is the one on the album maybe, but there was an initial playing of the song that Jaco did before that where Zawinul stopped him because he was too busy and over playing. After Zawinul spoke to him about what he wanted, less busy, play beautiful and melodic etc, Jaco complied, and what you hear on the record is the run through immediately after this conversation between them. So technically speaking, what's on the Black Market record of the tune Cannonball is at the very least not the very first and only attempt Jaco made at the piece. Nevertheless, Jaco is AMAZING on it of course!

    • @vbassone
      @vbassone Рік тому

      There are several interviews online with Zawinul talking about that first session basically auditioning Jaco by having him play on the track "Cannonball" from the Black Market Album. This also is talked about in at least two books; Zawinul's biography, and the best book out there on WR called "Elegant People." Also, there are interview segments with Zawinul in the Jaco documentary where he tells the story of the recording of "Cannonball." The entire chronology and reasons why Alphonso left the band and the entrance of Jaco into WR can also be found in the two books I mentioned.@@gregdefazio1478

      Listen man, Alex doesn't remember in this case every detail accurately. That's all, I mean it happens that even though people who were actually "there" at an event etc may not remember every single detail accurately. Hey man, I've even heard Chick Corea and John McLaughlin INCORRECTLY recount certain years they recorded certain things etc etc. If you go and read the interviews and watch the interviews etc you will see those details don't lineup EXACTLY between what Joe and Acuna say. Also, what is in the books is probably most accurate. Ok? P.S. I mean IN NO WAY to be disrespectful to Alex Acuna... I'm just pointing out some finer points of the details...@@gregdefazio1478

    Avery Sharpe mentions Stanley Clarke. I know Jaco was phenomenal and brilliant, but I'm going to be tremendously honest, because I've seen both Jaco and Stanley live in the 70''s and 80's peek. In my personal opinion there's no comparison to Stanley Clarke's improvising on electric bass. Jaco wasn't a great improviser compared to what I've heard Stanley do especially live. I understand Jaco had a bigger than life personality and energy that's great to talk about.

    • @kohl1999

      I think when musicians are at that level, debates about "who is better" become just trivial and almost meaningless and more about what your musical tastes are.

    • @musician069
      @musician069 3 місяці тому

      I would have to honestly say. Electric Jaco is the better improviser. Acoustic then Stan is the man. I wish there were some recording of Jaco on upright.
