  • In this installment, I’ll be analyzing the Sopranos. Specifically, I am interrogating the role ghosts play in the narrative in relation to one very important scene within the series.

The ghosts in the Soprano's narrative. The characters suffer from a guilty conscience and conflict with morality. This is why their minds conjure up deep vivid haunting dreams, visages in mirrors, apparitions of the Virgin Mary, and hear thumping noises when they're alone.
Tony suffers multiple traumas as a small child. He sees his father beat up a neighbour, chop off Satriale's pinky, his eyesight is threatened by his mother with a carving fork. PTSD when PTSD wasn't even a thing, back in the 60s. He smacks his head every time he faints from anxiety. He further aggravates his mental disorder with multiple car accidents.
In Paulie's case, he is haunted by the unknown. His hyper vigilance, intensifies when he hears noises around him at night. His girlfriend suggests he see a medium, to get a clearer picture of what is going on in the supernatural realm. This does not quell his guilty conscience. It makes it much worst.
These are the symptoms of mental illness brought on by their addictions, dozens of murders, immoral behavior, and unconscionable multiple sex partners. David Chase and his writers, letting everyone know what scumbags these mobsters are.

The medium literally plays into it. He goes off Paulies accent, his clothes. He knew he was a POS monster, who guesses correctly that Paulie had killed people, after paulie has already been looking in the air. It could go either way, but I think there is more supernatural happenings, like the wine glass that moves on its own in season 4, after they decide to finally eat Karen's last ziti to the crow when Christopher becomes made and my favorite. The warning of 3 o'clock, they all think it's a time, but its actually a direction- in the last scene, right before black, where does Tony turn? To his 3 O'CLOCK!
Pure Kino made a similar video to this that goes more into the supernatural happenings rather than what this guy is doing, of which this vid is good too

I think mobsters as a whole are superstitious, or at least at a subconscious level. I remember one story told by Michael Franzese (ex-capo of Colombo Crime Family, now a motivational speaker and UA-camr) about one of his guys. The guy asked to give him a lift to his home in Michael's car. When they get there, the guy told Michael "don't turn off the engine". He walked out of the car and towards the door, ring the bell, waited a few seconds, then went back into the car. Michael was weirded out and asked the guy "Aren't you gonna come in?" The guy replied "Why? There's no one home. Michael, ever since that accident with my dad, I have never been alone in the house. I think this place is haunted."
The guy had previously lived in that house with his father and his brother. Some time after both him and his brother got "made", he had to whack his father since he laid hands on a girl that their boss is related to (or something like that). That event haunted them both ever since.

I was intrigued when you talked about parallel universes within The Sopranos. The only thing I can figure that you're referring to is when Tony is in a coma and dreams of being a different person - a salesman, with the wallet of another man called Kevin Finnerty whom he gets mistaken for. Other possible interpretations of this are that perhaps Tony is getting a glimpse of purgatory, being shown a different possibility of what he could have done with his life. That this is a vision of the afterlife would seem to be supported when he is given the choice of entering the big white house, which may represent hell, as I believe he had seen this house before in a previous dream and his mother was inside it - it made him terrified. The "Kevin Finnerty" persona may represent Tony's last chance upon waking from the coma to change his ways. OR, it could also be Tony's sub-conscious playing games with him, for similar reasons - showing him another possible life some part of him may crave. I don't see necessarily that any of it would have to be a parallel universe. Is there more to this?

    • @secondcomingofbast9908
      @secondcomingofbast9908 Рік тому +3

I'm sure that's what he meant but I agree more with your take. Though I'd say Finnerty represented the evil that hijacked Tony's real life.

It was comedic at the time. I never thought to observe it from your perspective until now. You're right. I never understood if these people were "haunting" them, why didn't this change their behavior? They were always haunted, in living with fear someone in the crew would snitch. Ghost would show up at other services, in dreams, or wherever. But diminished the humanity left behind, moreso? They didn't stop killing. It seemed to justify their rage or anger to hurt more. If not inward then outward. Death seemed transactual. Next man up. Ro was the only one you saw grieve sincerely.

Good video I liked it. Anything about the Sopranos is going to be good. I think it's an interesting dynamic maybe not seen in other mob movies. Coming from the Chicago area. I do know for a fact that a lot of the old Gangster hideouts are very haunted. I live next to one of the most haunted cemeteries on Earth just 2 miles from where I live and a lot of has to do with the mobsters. It was one of their dumping grounds. So, I feel David added this element to the show b/c it is a part of the story and never really has been told in a movie or series like this in a mob movie.

Melfi suggests "Alternate universes?" and Tony says "I don't know. Maybe." Ive been banging this drum for years. Its very relevent to "that" scene that finishes the series. I think to a degree that Chase himself doesnt understand the implications of his own work. All the smug folks have been for years saying "Tony got killed, it was all set up when (whatsiface) says its all goes dark". But given that afterlife factually exists in Sopranos verse then "that" ending just sucks. Its sucked then, it still sucks now. It was not clever. I recently heard an interview where Chase there had been a plan to have Tony killed on is way home as a roundout to the opening credits. So, fine , do that. Ah well, its was SO many years ago now. i just hope the smug gits finally shut up and admit the ending was not as clever as they/Chase thought it was.

Dostoyevsky wrote a short story about dead people talking from their graves. It’s called Bobok. Since the Sopranos has many literary references I wonder if the beginning of The Many Saints of Newark was inspired by it?

That movie isn't canon to me, even David Chase said he didn't watch the show again before making the movie

BTW since Paulie isn't married, would that really be his goumar? Wouldn't it just be his girlfriend? I'm just saying. And why do we never see her again anyway? She was excellent in Scrubs. But I'm interrupting you again....carry on my good sir, carry on!

You lost me when you mispronounced Mikey Palmice’s name. And the title, Many Saints, is just a translated version of Moltisante. Nice try but did you watch the show? There are a lot of other, more profound supernatural experiences. Big Pussy, 3 o’clock, Tony’s prophetic dreams, the Virgin Mary at the Bing, the cat staring at that poor dead kid. You got the medium right. But that was the most obvious

Ugh, for the MILLIONTH time, Tony Montana from Scarface is NOT A MOB BOSS. HES A CUBAN DRUG LORD. Not even close to the same thing. Ask a wise guy if he likes being compared to a cuban drug lord. Idc if he was played by an Italian, hes not Mafia

One more thing... For those of you that are wondering or not wondering... The pistol that takes the place of the letter r in sopranos regarding the opening... Is a Beretta nine-millimeter... specifically a Beretta 92 series. An Italian firearm. Well... originally.

You want to know to television show universes that were connected? Breaking bad and The walking Dead. I believe it's the first or second episode where Daryl pulls out a bag and inside that bag is blue methamphetamine... In addition to some other stuff. It's a bag that he takes I believe out of a side saddle on a motorcycle. What television show has blue methamphetamine other than breaking bad?
    They must be connected somehow.
The many saints of Newark was a shity movie. I did not enjoy it at all. And furthermore... Christopher's mother in the many saints of Newark and Christopher's mother in The sopranos apparently are two different people all together. 🤦
