Yes! See where it says "Wanted Lists" and "Wanted Items" in the bottom left-hand corner. Click on the "Wanted Items" tab. This will show the items that are needed to get up to 100%!

Completely agree with you, Lego is a toy meant to be build and played with. So bricklinking a model you really want to build is a really good way of getting it. Sure some of those mint boxed collectors disagree, and in all honesty I disagree with them too. I think it is a waste to keep sets in their sealed boxes just standing there collecting dust.
Lego is to build and play not stare at it while it sits in a cardboard box. Even if you want it put in on display, put the built set on display! Not a cardboard box.
I have done the R2-D2 thing mentioned at 8:40 , I did it without caring for the colours are all. So I did it by the cheapest colour I could get the specific part in. It cost me £32 + shipping, which is very cheep for the set. (I am taking about the UCS R2-D2) when built it looked amazing. It gave of the vibe of when you build legs from your own parts at home where you used random colours. And it's still easily recognisable as R2-D2. If anyone wants anymore information or pictures let me know and I'll post some as a UA-cam video slideshow or something like that and leave the link in the comments.

@@tcuc3e I did it manually which took a while because there are 276 unique parts in the set. On rebrickable there is an option to "switch colours" if you have the pro plan. I've never used this so I can't confirm this achieves the desired goal. If you already have leftovers Lego sets rebrickable can be used to enter up to 3 sets you own and tell you what you can build using those parts and you can filter so not to care about the colour of parts. I don't know what all the fuss is about. Lego means play well, and a few slogans ago the advertising campaign was called Just Imagine. Well just imagine you changed the colours of r2d2 from white to red. You've played well used your imagination and loosely created your on MOC. I want to build the Giant super truck set 5571. I don't care about the stickers or a few bricks being wrong. I want the challenge of building the truck then a week later taking it apart and turning it into a helicopter. Keep up the good work Jake.
100% agree with you. Nobody cares if the stickers are not there and you need to buy a very small amount of pieces in a different color(and even that doesn't happen often).I only care about building the set and once I'm done, I can use it as a decoration for my room, playing with it, and if I don't want the set anymore, I can just sell it, or give it to charity.
yes, actually building a lego set you don't have with parts you do have, is a very interesting challenge - you can get any instructions online for free, then try to build the set as best as you can - you will need to improvise, because you will definitely not have all the parts ie. change the colours or completely rebuild parts of the model (even so, you will usually need to have multiple times more pieces than are contained in the model you are trying to build, to get nice results)

I’m glad you are showing people how to use BrickLink 😃 I wish it didn’t cost so much to ship overseas from the US - between shipping and VAT can be tough on people that buy from me. I should clarify that nothing is wrong with your method. It genuine LEGO and satisfies what you want without buying knock offs. I do something similar but I do try to get all the rarer pieces. I know many have substituted minor parts that are expensive and there is nothing wrong with that for a collection. Just don’t like it when someone tries to sell a set with substitutes as “complete”
I think BrickLink could work on their approach to shipping. Why can't it be more upfront, like eBay? I guess people order different amounts of LEGO, but I really don't think it should be too challenging to provide a realistic estimate for each order. I'm always grateful when you comment on my videos; you're a real LEGO UA-camr! I agree with you that it is very annoying when people pretend that a set is "complete" when it isn't. Even more annoying for me is buying a "complete" set that has a handful of missing parts. Grrrr.....
Dr Jake's Very British Reviews because with eBay you aged generally buying an individual item. With BrickLink the size and quantity can very greatly. They have worked in shipping based on the weight of the item but many sellers are not using it. I do but it has flawed and can grossly under estimate based on size. It’s getting better. The reason some don’t use it is they don’t trust it. Plus you have to update it for so many different options when the post office changes rates. But if more sellers opt in for it - then it would be easier for the casual user. Personally - I kind of like that BrickLink was hard to use - it kept kids off the site and people that don’t know much. Never had the bad experiences like with eBay

I really enjoyed these videos, they helped me look at how to buy Lego sets without spending a lot of money. I agree, Lego is still a toy and I'm not going to spend anymore than i have to on some of these sets. I don't see anything wrong with pricing out a Lego set. I even bought a "used" set, if it's in pieces and not already put together. Putting it together is half the fun! Sometimes you can find a real deal if you look around.
I know this was made a year ago but just wanted to say thank you for making this video. I used to play with legos as a little kid but I stopped once I got older. Now I’m older and in high school and I’m back in collecting them. Problem is I don’t have enough money and knowing that I can save money and get these discontinued LEGO sets. So thank you very much in helping me gain these new LEGO sets
I lost so much time trying to order bricks on bricklink or brickowl, I always end up with ridiculous shipping or minimum not reached... the lego website is much more simple and the shipping is cheap. And I was surprised to find out a lot of pieces are even cheaper on the lego website than bricklink... so the only way it could be useful is if the parts are not produced anymore.
Your a real Dr as far as my son is concerned Jake , thanks mate. He's Autistic and Lego mad. He gets quite down if he cannnot find what he wants and doesn't really understand the concept of obsolescence. He's made a couple of big sets one being the original Hoth ATAT and Slave one and loads of Star Wars mini figures which is ever increasing. I ordered the parts for him and he built them. Aye aye! I wholly concur. That really is the "true spirit of Lego". You have a bunch of parts and you make something using your ingenuity and your imagination. Perhaps it's old-school, but it's hugely satisfying. Building and experimenting with a MOC that I came up with by myself versus staring at a MIB pristine set gathering dust. I know which I'd choose every time. Note that the latter could be a great investment strategy, but the two have very different purposes, both valid.

I completely agree with you! I buy sets primarily because I like the model and enjoy the process of putting it together to achieve that model that I spent my money on, not to keep it sealed in a box just so I can possibley make money in the future. If a set I own is worth something after it is retired, great! I can just say I have something valuable in my collection, not to invest in a toy.
I think the Lego Group put the debate to rest when they bought Bricklink and have no plans to discontinue any buying and selling. I just found your channel while doing some research for my Lego crazed daughter. I admit I’m loving Lego as well.
Just had at it your way on bricklink, could buy the Tie Defender for 31.53us, minus instructions, pilot and extra peices. The set with no box or stormtrooper being sold for 35.00us on bricklinks. I applaud you're effort to get around the Lepin conundrum, sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. I will allways prefer Legos, but I also have never had a single issue with the three Lepin sets that I have bought, other than the moral aspect.
I really enjoyed the last video and went straight to work searching for sets that I want. Retired modulars didn't really work for me as some of their pieces are very specific to the set. However, I was able to part out 2 smaller sets for significantly less. What I learned from this though... instead of creating all carts and then removing pieces, I remove those pieces before and then create carts. This allows to further reduce how many stores you're buying from which helps to reduce shipping. Overall, I use your method before I buy any used or new set to see if I can part it out cheaper. Thank you for this second video - after your first I have managed to complete 3 of my old sets from the 1980s which were missing a couple of parts, and to completely recreate another one from scratch. One of the problems I found with brick link prior to these videos had to do with not knowing the name of obscure parts - but the 'part out' method solved that for me. Thanks again.

One of the very best sets to use Bricklink for is the giant minifigure man from 2000. It has a lot of pieces, but all of them are very common, save for a few stickers.
Don't listen to the haters - this is an amazing way of allowing Lego fans to build old sets, without going to a counterfeit version. So it's helping the Lego company whilst fuelling the flame that burns inside true Lego lovers. You are doing a great thing! Thankyou
Haha! Your opening playing with the toy made me laugh out loud. Good reminder about how Lego is intended to be played with. When my 5 year old son breaks sets or minifigures apart and mixes up the pieces to make something new, it takes great restraint for me to let him play like that. My children's interest in Lego started my own interest in collecting. So there are just a few Legos that are only for mommy, lol. A little embarrassing to admit 😳.
Another bricklink tip: I have a handful of parts I always want more of. Castle walls, horses, minifig weapons, technic gears. Whenever I buy parts I check each story I am buying from for these parts. It saves on shipping in the long run.
One thing I’ve noticed is that it seems to be cheaper if you go to the effort of individually buying used bricks, it’ll take a while but it might be worth it. By using the wanted list function you’re getting charged about 10c a piece. Whilst most pieces can be got for 2c or even less!
Hidden bonus of this method, touched on slightly here: you have greater control of the bricks in your build. You can save money by foregoing some unnecessary and ultra specific items (like flags, banners, stickers). You can also use it to change colors! For example, if you want to build a bunch of medieval castle + gothic cathedral designs, but you can make them all in the same variety of brick colors, like light brown to match your Hogwarts, or all white/light grey bricks to become Minas Tirith.
A few years ago I made the Lego Technic rc excavator from what i had (a few medium-bigger sets, small sets and a few remote controllers and receivers). It looked terrible, a l-motor did stick out, but my point is: I only had to buy 2 parts from Lego and the set worked with only spending €5, - including shipping. My friend gave me one of the more recent X-wings, like a $70 set. I had enough spare parts that, with some alterations, I put together a modified black version of it. Then I spent about $10 on brick link and made it a little more true to form.
Tries to save money. Says “five dollars, not that big of a deal”. Jokes aside, this is literally how I get my sets. And I love how you mixed your legos as a kid, same here.
Try excluding the expensive items in your wanted list before searching stores - there might be a more optimal combination if that expensive part isn't ever considered in the algorithm. Also, you can run an average price on your wanted list to exclude these items before you even search stores the first time.
Some shops doesn't have the handling fee nor shipping availible first hand, if it needs to be invoiced, so the order could accumulate another 10 euro per order depending on the fee's, sourcing a few missing pieces is usually great, but I'm sceptical to a full set.
I just watched your part 1 and the first thing I checked parted out was UCS R2D2. Saw the flex hoses cost 100€ total and was looking for a replacement. Actually have it in the carts currently. Now I saw this part 2. :D
Some good tips there. You could also try Rebrickable, you enter the details of all the set you have plus any extra bricks and it will calculate what other models you can build plus list any missing parts when not 100%. You then only need to by the missing parts.
I just did this to get the retired Ferrari F40 set and it was around $200 after shipping and handling. Included wheels and stickers (which were most of the cost) A NIB is 300+ before shipping !
I agree that LEGO should just be played with because essentially what you are doing is just buying pieces to a set you want which is kinda the same as just buying a mixed bucket of LEGO and building a set you like.

I didn't know about many of the Bricklink features you mentioned - ESPECIALLY where the site will auto-calculate the best combination of sellers & prices! I'll be using THAT feature a lot now that I know about it! Please reveal more "super-user" Bricklink tips as I am a complete newb on that site and could use all the help you can give!
I like your method but there are some sets I would prefer to buy the set but most sets this is useful but one bit of important advice is swap parts out for other substitute parts that do the same job once when I was little there was an app my cousin had witch was Lego instructions for simple models we used parts from our own inventory and one model needed 1x2 snot brick we didn’t have them so we used a 1x2 technic brick and pine with studs on the end and they do the same job and it can be done with many examples like 1x4 or 1x2 + 1x2 next to each other
used this method to buy a few old aqua zone sets. the 8 year old in me almost made my adult self cry after i built the small shark sub. the first set i bought and assembled myself when i was a kid. this "old" dog thanks you sir. cheers!

No VAT within Europe on Bricklink 😢 I guess 2018 was the days. Had to pay a surprise £40 this week on a bricklink order this week to get it out of customs. Don’t think I’ll be ordering from outside the UK anytime again soon.
Great video! Hundred percent agree this method is the most in the spirit of lego! Depending on the set you can get all the minifigs and stickers and still be cheaper than a sealed box one. I mean your'e just gonna open it and ruin the whole point of paying the premium for a sealed box anyway lol.
If you did want to buy other LEGO sets for parts, it's a good idea to go for sets that have had the minifigures parted out. You can get some incredible deals on sets where the minifigures have been removed. It's a great way to obtain lots of new parts for pretty cheap.
Screw the collectors, they often hate anything they see as threatening the value of their "investment" by driving prices down. If you want some fun with your lego this is a great way to go, well done.
Thank you, I wanted to buy the 30365 set that on Amazon that was 6 bucks which is fairly priced. I checked bricklink and it was only 1.30, even if it's small I like the 4 buck decrease
I feel like the true joy of Lego is what you make it. Some people like the original set fully sealed, some people are Afol collectors, but many are a bunch of kids who love to open and interact with their sets. I have not against collectors but some of them should be more open to embracing the creativity of Lego.

This is awesome. As far as retired sets go, I’d rather be able to just buy the parts from BrickLink and download the manual from LEGO then build it. It’s all about being able to own it and build it. I could careless about the box or things like that.

I know this was made a year ago but just wanted to say thank you for making this video. I used to play with legos as a little kid but I stopped once I got older. Now I’m older and in high school and I’m back in collecting them. Problem is I don’t have enough money and knowing that I can save money and get these discontinued LEGO sets. So thank you very much in helping me gain these new LEGO sets
I lost so much time trying to order bricks on bricklink or brickowl, I always end up with ridiculous shipping or minimum not reached... the lego website is much more simple and the shipping is cheap. And I was surprised to find out a lot of pieces are even cheaper on the lego website than bricklink... so the only way it could be useful is if the parts are not produced anymore.
Your a real Dr as far as my son is concerned Jake , thanks mate. He's Autistic and Lego mad. He gets quite down if he cannnot find what he wants and doesn't really understand the concept of obsolescence. He's made a couple of big sets one being the original Hoth ATAT and Slave one and loads of Star Wars mini figures which is ever increasing. I ordered the parts for him and he built them. Bricklink is a serious lifesaver and your advice has been superb. So thanks Jake, very much appreciated.
I’ve used this method to build the 2016 Death Star, stickers I managed to get from Lego and already had most of the mini figures from other sets. Thanks for the videos.

Aye aye! I wholly concur. That really is the "true spirit of Lego". You have a bunch of parts and you make something using your ingenuity and your imagination. Perhaps it's old-school, but it's hugely satisfying. Building and experimenting with a MOC that I came up with by myself versus staring at a MIB pristine set gathering dust. I know which I'd choose every time. Note that the latter could be a great investment strategy, but the two have very different purposes, both valid.
I used your method to make a classic space themed x-wing. Really happy with it.
Very nice video. Lastly I've heard about brick link, but I didn't know that there is such a winderfull option to "part out". I love it very much! Maybe I will complete some sets I dreamed about when I was a child.
I completely agree with you! I buy sets primarily because I like the model and enjoy the process of putting it together to achieve that model that I spent my money on, not to keep it sealed in a box just so I can possibley make money in the future. If a set I own is worth something after it is retired, great! I can just say I have something valuable in my collection, not to invest in a toy.

I think the Lego Group put the debate to rest when they bought Bricklink and have no plans to discontinue any buying and selling. I just found your channel while doing some research for my Lego crazed daughter. I admit I’m loving Lego as well.
Just had at it your way on bricklink, could buy the Tie Defender for 31.53us, minus instructions, pilot and extra peices. The set with no box or stormtrooper being sold for 35.00us on bricklinks. I applaud you're effort to get around the Lepin conundrum, sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. I will allways prefer Legos, but I also have never had a single issue with the three Lepin sets that I have bought, other than the moral aspect.
I really enjoyed the last video and went straight to work searching for sets that I want. Retired modulars didn't really work for me as some of their pieces are very specific to the set. However, I was able to part out 2 smaller sets for significantly less. What I learned from this though... instead of creating all carts and then removing pieces, I remove those pieces before and then create carts. This allows to further reduce how many stores you're buying from which helps to reduce shipping. Overall, I use your method before I buy any used or new set to see if I can part it out cheaper. Thank you for this second video - after your first I have managed to complete 3 of my old sets from the 1980s which were missing a couple of parts, and to completely recreate another one from scratch. One of the problems I found with brick link prior to these videos had to do with not knowing the name of obscure parts - but the 'part out' method solved that for me. Thanks again.

Couldn't a person also check a flea market, i was able to buy a retired lego star wars hyena droid bomber set for only five dollars when it costs up to 80 bucks
Of course, that's a great idea. Flea markets, ebay, gumtree, charity shops; all good places.
The hyeana droid bomber only commands about 15 bucks it’s a well hated set by most (not me I have 4 lol)

One of the very best sets to use Bricklink for is the giant minifigure man from 2000. It has a lot of pieces, but all of them are very common, save for a few stickers.
Don't listen to the haters - this is an amazing way of allowing Lego fans to build old sets, without going to a counterfeit version. So it's helping the Lego company whilst fuelling the flame that burns inside true Lego lovers.

Haha! Your opening playing with the toy made me laugh out loud. Good reminder about how Lego is intended to be played with. When my 5 year old son breaks sets or minifigures apart and mixes up the pieces to make something new, it takes great restraint for me to let him play like that. My children's interest in Lego started my own interest in collecting. So there are just a few Legos that are only for mommy, lol. A little embarrassing to admit 😳.
Another bricklink tip: I have a handful of parts I always want more of. Castle walls, horses, minifig weapons, technic gears. Whenever I buy parts I check each story I am buying from for these parts. It saves on shipping in the long run.
One thing I’ve noticed is that it seems to be cheaper if you go to the effort of individually buying used bricks, it’ll take a while but it might be worth it. By using the wanted list function you’re getting charged about 10c a piece. Whilst most pieces can be got for 2c or even less!
Hidden bonus of this method, touched on slightly here: you have greater control of the bricks in your build. You can save money by foregoing some unnecessary and ultra specific items (like flags, banners, stickers). You can also use it to change colors! For example, if you want to build a bunch of medieval castle + gothic cathedral designs, but you can make them all in the same variety of brick colors, like light brown to match your Hogwarts, or all white/light grey bricks to become Minas Tirith.
Totally agree with your comments. My nephew uses parts from new kits and builds his own moc's. It's only plastic and costs a lot to buy.
A few years ago I made the Lego Technic rc excavator from what i had (a few medium-bigger sets, small sets and a few remote controllers and receivers). It looked terrible, a l-motor did stick out, but my point is: I only had to buy 2 parts from Lego and the set worked with only spending €5, - including shipping. My friend gave me one of the more recent X-wings, like a $70 set. I had enough spare parts that, with some alterations, I put together a modified black version of it. Then I spent about $10 on brick link and made it a little more true to form.

Try excluding the expensive items in your wanted list before searching stores - there might be a more optimal combination if that expensive part isn't ever considered in the algorithm. Also, you can run an average price on your wanted list to exclude these items before you even search stores the first time.

Some shops doesn't have the handling fee nor shipping availible first hand, if it needs to be invoiced, so the order could accumulate another 10 euro per order depending on the fee's, sourcing a few missing pieces is usually great, but I'm sceptical to a full set.
I just watched your part 1 and the first thing I checked parted out was UCS R2D2. Saw the flex hoses cost 100€ total and was looking for a replacement. Actually have it in the carts currently. Now I saw this part 2. :D

Some good tips there. You could also try Rebrickable, you enter the details of all the set you have plus any extra bricks and it will calculate what other models you can build plus list any missing parts when not 100%. You then only need to by the missing parts.
Totally agree with your attitude for Lego.
I just did this to get the retired Ferrari F40 set and it was around $200 after shipping and handling. Included wheels and stickers (which were most of the cost)
A NIB is 300+ before shipping !

I agree that LEGO should just be played with because essentially what you are doing is just buying pieces to a set you want which is kinda the same as just buying a mixed bucket of LEGO and building a set you like.

I'll be using THAT feature a lot now that I know about it! Please reveal more "super-user" Bricklink tips as I am a complete newb on that site and could use all the help you can give!

I like your method but there are some sets I would prefer to buy the set but most sets this is useful but one bit of important advice is swap parts out for other substitute parts that do the same job once when I was little there was an app my cousin had witch was Lego instructions for simple models we used parts from our own inventory and one model needed 1x2 snot brick we didn’t have them so we used a 1x2 technic brick and pine with studs on the end and they do the same job and it can be done with many examples like 1x4 or 1x2 + 1x2 next to each other
used this method to buy a few old aqua zone sets. the 8 year old in me almost made my adult self cry after i built the small shark sub. the first set i bought and assembled myself when i was a kid. this "old" dog thanks you sir. cheers!
At the end of the day there will always be more loose bricks compared to finished sets, so this is a great way to re purpose them.

Depending on the set you can get all the minifigs and stickers and still be cheaper than a sealed box one. I mean your'e just gonna open it and ruin the whole point of paying the premium for a sealed box anyway lol.
If you did want to buy other LEGO sets for parts, it's a good idea to go for sets that have had the minifigures parted out. You can get some incredible deals on sets where the minifigures have been removed. It's a great way to obtain lots of new parts for pretty cheap.

Screw the collectors, they often hate anything they see as threatening the value of their "investment" by driving prices down. If you want some fun with your lego this is a great way to go, well done.

I feel like the true joy of Lego is what you make it. Some people like the original set fully sealed, some people are Afol collectors, but many are a bunch of kids who love to open and interact with their sets. I have not against collectors but some of them should be more open to embracing the creativity of Lego.
I might buy each brick on brick link for some retired sets and the minifigures separate. as for stickers I could print them

@@DrJakesVeryBritishReviews You can open your store on there as well. I've been on it since the start and prefer it to Brick Link, although I know that's had a big overhaul in recent years so may be better than my previous experiences. A lot of stores sell on both as well.

This is awesome. As far as retired sets go, I’d rather be able to just buy the parts from BrickLink and download the manual from LEGO then build it. It’s all about being able to own it and build it. I could careless about the box or things like that.
