- This video shows how to remove the steering wheel on a Toyota Corolla. This particular car is a 2000 Toyota Corolla, but the process is identical for 1998 - 2002 and similar for other years with an airbag. It is good practice to disconnect the battery when working with an airbag. The center nut for the steering wheel shaft is a 19mm (3/4") and the airbag fasteners are a Torx T-30.
Thanks very much for this. The only thing I would add is that there is always a capacitor somewhere in the airbag circuitry that actually triggers the bag's detonation. Depending on the make and model, manufacturers specify waiting at least 30 minutes or more to allow the system to fully discharge after battery disconnection. Thanks for the T30 and 19mm callouts. I was going to a junkyard and it's always a terrible feeling to come up short with a missing tool. Much appreciated.
Hello, thanks for watching! I have never seen or experienced a capacitor in the SRS system and I would hate to think that any automaker would hate us that much, but anything is possible! I have seen someone accidentally drill through a live SRS wiring harness and deploy $2500 worth of Mercedes airbags though, oops!
@@andrew_ball Hi Andrew, I think, "It's a feature" ;-] As I recall, this 'battery-less fire' feature was (is?) there because the NTSA required it. I don't know if this requirement still stands, but I was just pointing it out.
"Capacitors were placed into vehicles to solve the problem of the vehicle
battery being destroyed early in a crash and therefore no power was available to
deploy the supplemental restraint systems. While these capacitors solved the
problem of power loss they created a problem in that they can hold a back-up
power supply for up to 30 minutes. This back-up power supply can lead to the
deployment of the supplemental restraint systems during the patient extrication.
The best way to attempt to prevent this is to disable the capacitor’s power source
- the battery.
When disabling the battery the battery should be disconnected or cut on
the negative side then the positive side. If disconnecting the cables, push them
away from the terminal so that they will not go back into contact. If cutting the

cables it is best to cut them in two places therefore placing a gap in the wire so
that they cannot reconnect.
Even after disconnecting the battery there is no guarantee that the airbags
have been deactivated. As mentioned before the capacitor can hold a charge up
to 30 minutes. The length of time each model of vehicle will hold a charge varies
from 0 seconds to 30 minutes. Even after the capacitor has been discharged
there are several factors that may allow for discharge of the airbags"

Hello, thank you for watching! The airbags are specific to the steering wheel frame they are intended to mate to, but I have seen cases in the past where the airbag fits properly, but the springs in the frame get bent a little and do not suspend the airbag / horn assembly properly. In that case you should be able to expand the frame springs a little to hold the airbag better, but if it is the wrong airbag altogether it would be best to get the right one.

Hello, my apologies as I have not done this before, but I wonder if you could remove the clockspring from the steering column which has the airbag cable sticking out of it. Removing the clockspring disc may cause the airbag light to come on, but I am not sure. Best of luck!

Hello, I tried to find a source online, but I guess they are a little obscure. If you have local access to a wrecker, they may have some still on the cars that you could buy, or if a wrecker is not local to you, they may take part requests over the phone and then they would charge for the part and shipping. Failing that, the dealer should be able to source the cover caps.

Hello, I think the process would be similar, but the airbag wire may have a different connector as the newer airbag appears to have a different profile.
Is the leather cover on the steering wheel standard? Or is it aftermarket never seen one before on this model in Australia. Great demo by the way thankyou.
Hi, that is an awesome $20 amazon special! The leather is slightly stretchy and comes with waxed thread. It takes a bit of patience to install and tolerance for slight imperfection, but the end effect is pretty nice if you are okay with a slightly thicker wheel.
