This film was better than all of the Best Picture nominees that year. But Americans didn't want to accept that.

A bunch of US critics called it the best film of the year.
I believe one of em said that it was unfair that it was in the foreign language category as it was a shoe-in.

Scorsese is my favourite director ever but either “The Lives of Others” or “Pans Labyrinth” should definitely have won best picture over “The Departed”. Shows all the issues with the Academy; Goodfellas should have won in 1990 so they give Scorsese “The Departed” in 2006, Pans Labyrinth should have won in 2006 so “Shape of Water” wins. Constantly on catchup and very rarely award the best film of the year.

Watched both, the Lives of others is better, or at least I liked it more. PL was essentially a fairy tale, with black and white evil or great characters and had a strong political agenda, even if it was beautifully filmed. TLoO was great because it was just the opposite, a story for adults with layered/grey characters and with a nuanced political view.

Really got screwed by the change in rules that prevented films that were nominated for best foreign language film for competing for other awards in the subsequent year. For example - Day For Night won for foreign film in 1973 and was nominated again the following year for direction and acting. The new rule basically disqualified The Lives Of Others - as it was not on general release in 2006. A greats shame as it remains one of the best films of that decade.

what a huge injustice! it should have won "Pan's labyrinth"... but at the same time it's funny and interesting because this year (2019) another mexican director (alfonso cuaron) "took revenge" against Germany and the director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, because in this case "Roma" (from Mexico) won and "Never look away" (from Germany) lost... how ironic life is! Lol

The year the Oscars got it wrong…..Again
“The Lives of Others” a soon forgotten movie that not many people watched at the time not many talked about or even remember that’s what you get with a good movie based on more really boring spying escapade with a great ending thankfully many people have watched it now and enjoyed it as should be despite its floors. My vote goes for El laberinto del fauno, one of the greatest movies ever made though it should of won best picture in its own right and let “The Lives of Others” win Best Foreign Language Film as it was titled back then. So the the rightful winner in this category is El laberinto del fauno and 2nd to the nicely made but boring “The lives of others”
“The departed” won best Picture but should of given its Oscar to Andrew Lau and Alan Mak as it was a remake of infernal affairs and the Oscars were trying to make amends for Goodfellas so we know who were given the Oscars but we all know who should of won and today people still talk about how great El laberinto del fauno is an nobody really remember good movies such as though mentioned earlier and rightly so !

People talk about it more because of immature simps like you that need a fairy tale ending and evil vs good characters to spoon feed you it's political agenda. It's for teens and 20 year olds, not adults.

@@11Garrett11 and the actors, especially Muhe....you said it well, a masterpiece indeed. wish there were more movies like this one.cinema is dying, I started watching again and again movies of the past decades (Shawshank redemption, green mile, the godfather, a clockwork orange, someone flew over the cuckoo's nest, fight club etc.) because they don't produce nothing worthy of attention anymore. ;( I miss those great scripts...now we have only super heroes and fantasies sh*t with some exceptions of course.
