I’m so glad you said that about not chasing scratches. I did full correction on my wife’s white car. I was doing headstands to find scratches. I said screw it and did my best.
That’s exactly right Matt, but I try and maintain with my cars paint correction about 80% sometimes 90 silver is just like that mine is ice silver metallic, Plus it’s a daily driver I finally came to that realization I think I’m just “obsessed” for me I get up in the early morning 4 am and I’m getting gas at a gas station and I look into my paint from those high pressure sodium lights and I don’t see Marring or scratches I’m not gonna touch it anymore !
The end goal isn't to remove all the scratches, the end goal is to make the car look better. In this case, making it look better doesn't have to involve removing all the scratches, as is typical on other colors. Light scratches, haze, and marring, are what make a Silver car look dull. Simply removing those, without removing the deep stuff, is more than sufficient for even the most selective person on a color like this. If the haters want to hate, fine, but you are doing what's best for this car in terms of getting the look you want, and preserving as much of the clear as possible.
Saw the title and watched just too see if you had the same problems I did. Polished my F10 a few weeks ago and it was a pita. Carpro clearcut and still could barely remove scratches. Clear coat is hard as. Ended up doing the same thing. Looks great but most scratches are still there. Lucky for me it's white so scratches are hard to see most of the time.
Blue is best color, silver being a close second. IMO. Thanks Matt now removing the badges on the new GTI. Now looks so clean and used floss and some goooff. Need to get more TAR-X.
You should buy a in-shop electrically actuated waterfall machine and spray compressed air against the waterwall in order to keep the dust to a minimum.
I second your comments on the rock hard paint. I’ve just recently corrected my Alpine White M5 F10 using Shine Supply Chop Top on a Lake Country purple wool pad. This was using a Flex VRG primarily. This quite aggressive combination was quite effective at removing some of the heavy swirling that my car had. Worth a shot if you don’t feel like you’re getting adequate results on the 101 and MF pad (albeit on the Rupes machine which is obviously another variable).
Yeah, I just don't have the time under machine and skill set to make a rotary more efficient for me. I should probably invest the time to learn the machine for when it's appropriate.
I feel your pain, I have a Vapor Silver Metallic Mustang. I tried to correct the paint but ended up at the same point as you. I decided i would just push compound around the whole car, polish it, seal it, and call it a day. My biggest disappointment is it really made the paint better but if you look hard enough, in the right light, with the right angle, and the stars are aligned just so, that one scratch just hopes all around the car LOL
This may already be somewhere in the comments- after you make a pass you can spray the pad with water (very little) to extend the working time of the 101. There's no need to try and find some correct ratio of 101 and 210...
It's amazing, i thought i was the only one who removes stickers and crap from new stuff and then remove the sticky stuff with cleaner till its perfect haha.
Blow the pad out into a running shop vac. Just set the hose nozzle on the vac to a convenient level. I would think that would keep the dust down to an acceptable level.
I have an AW X3 M40 and the paint is super hard too. I also used M101 and there's a point where you just have to call it, rather than grinding on the same spots for extended periods.
I've got serious perfectionist tendencies, but silver cars are my happy place. For the reasons you start this video with, it gives me a break from some of that overkill that is typically my default.
That’s what you should come up with Matt, some sort of vacuum system you can use like a vacuum and a bucket to blow out your pad some sort of containment system!🤦♂️
Question: why didn’t you wet sand the deep scratches? You need to build a vacuum catcher that Kevin brown uses to collect pad dust. Super easy to build
I've always had good results with Meguiar's compounding/polishing products. I've been using them for a good 40 years. Since I worked my way through engineering school painting cars and motorcycles, etc. And yea, I'm one of those grandpa type guys, so careful with the grandpa comments, although not a grandpa, ...FYI. lol
If you just remove the rubber shroud of the Rupes machine it works just as it would with the washer mod. The only downside its that always ends up some dust inside machine easily.
Matt, at 22 min, how hard was it for you to just walk away? No inspection and such. I struggle with that on some jobs. Great of you to "honor the source" of Ward, Kilmer, and White. Thanks for the video
I love the F10/F11, but man I hate compounding them, they are rock hard and have all these invert panels, that makes it take extra long. I tend to spend about 25 hours on a 2 step, on F11s. They look stunning afterwards, but god..
Here before 1000 views 😂. I couldn't wait to see you getting this bad boy ready and corrected! Love the channel. I appreciate it because now looking at used cars I just think how much detailing does it need to make the previous owner want to buy it back 😭😭. @@ObsessedGarage Everything takes time. im the same way in some regards. I started taking my health seriously and focusing my energy to positive things and its helped me. Me: looking for the scratch you are pointing to. Also me: realizing my IPAD is set to 480 definition. LOL Matt, I have a silver Jeep and there are a few larger scratches that I want to compound. I know what you mean about making a decision between going overboard vs doing a great job. I’m gonna try to get thr big scratches out and then polish, seal and wax. I’ve never used a microfiber pad before and I’m a little worried about using them. Should I only use them for the largest scratches? Thanks
Hey Matt, have you tried Cutmax yet? I use to use 101 and hated the dust. Cutmax has almost no dust and is actually more aggressive. Sped up my process significantly.
How about dont use meguires compound at all ? I hate that crap. I learned with that line.....When I used other products after that it was like a revelation. I actually enjoyed the work more.
Creatures are just so good. I have so many different towels and aside from glass (obvious) and interiors (too thick), I just keep going back to them. Thicker pile for cleaning/drying, shorter for buffing. Downgraded creatures for wheels, tires, utility, etc.
Hi Matt, love your work. I currently have gtechnic CSL on my BMW in saffire black. It's not as glossy as I'd like or expected. I'm aware that I can't polish and then put a coating like CSL on. What would you suggest for ultimate gloss/shine and protection. Thanks.
CSL has very little to do with the "gloss." It's just topping what you achieved in the polishing stage. I would compound it off and then polish with a RUPES yellow pad and Sonax Perfect Finish.
For me I always wear a dusk mask when I compound and or polish when using a DA. The product you are using does make a ton of dust and that dust is really nasty when it gets in your lungs and it will put you at a higher risk of getting cancer. You may think you are not breathing it in but you are especially when you blow out the pads. If I were you I would wear a mask because this kind of problem will cause an issue a few years down the road and it is just not worth the risk. Have you ever thought of wearing a dust mask? I wear the 3M type with the two cartridges.
My opinion is you should also wear ear protections if you use the machine for more than 1 hour straight. A pair of goggles too? This is a dirt job, no wonder why engineers usually prefer to sit in front of a personal computer instead tweaking in the garage.
How does this guy make a living? What exactly is Obsessed Garage? I see he’s got quite the rides and the shop is pimped with every high end tool one can imagine.

I'm selling about $10,000,000 of the stuff that makes up my garage: flooring, lighting, cabinets, tools, detailing stuff, etc. I'm building it out to provide a total solution for everything I am using or will be using in the future.
Obsessed Garage Matt, thanks for the reply. So you are reselling already built equipment? Basically a reseller? Just trying to wrap my head around for example why I should buy washer X from you vs. going straight to the source of who built it etc..

Why don't you prime four pads and switch to a fresh one after each pass. You could then blow out all four pads together. Should cut down the time wasted walking in and out

I tried that. Microfiber was yielding a better result on this one.
