No intro, no unnecessary chatter, just a clear and accessible explanation of the basic structure of an arm bar. Well done sir, you must be a tremendous coach
I love this type of instruction. Not about a series of movements. But actual concepts about opponent control. Your success is determined by the relationship between his head and elbow and your hip. He just taught you how to defend this at the same time that how to attack. off you go mate
Fantastic details. Looking forward to trying this. I've been training BJJ for 3 years and never armbarred anyone from guard, I just thought it was impossible to do because the beginner set up can be seen a mile away. Going to give this a go. Cheers
Mike Best I got this on a guy while tucking an injured wrist in my belt. Used my free hand to control his head, and since I couldn’t control his other arm, he apparently saw no risk in crossing centerline with that elbow. Top lock and he was done
Thank you and appreciate the way the process is put across, I find BJJ quite difficult to use in combat but it really helps understanding what you need to get where you intend to go. Thank you John 👍
Baret Yoshida has been doing these types of set ups back in the day. Can’t find his old tutorials anymore, if you find it I highly recommend it. Also let me know. Lol. Can’t believe I lost those DVDs.
Right. Baret yoshida vids were very instrumental in my earlier grappling career. I still have them on dvd's and on my external hard drive. Gonna upload them for you. Great instructional vids.
Using the top lock allows you to get your leg close to their head before the finish. When you go for the final spin it is a much smaller distance and window for the opponent to pull the elbow out.
@@taylorwollmancg Maybe I should try spinning for the angle by keeping the top lock and minimizing that window. Instead of opening the legs and spinning as is shown here..
@@meetthemasters754 because this is a training video he isnt showing it in one smooth motion, but stopping to show and talk about important points. I'm sure if you bought the vids he has many more views of him doing the movement all at once.
Notice how John’s left thigh doesn’t move much from the initial top lock position. It appears to me while he pivots 90 his left tight remains behind his tricep / elbow. I’m just a beginner so I’m making simple sailor observations without of even trying it yet so I’m It sure.
Two questions: 1. how do I get the elbow to my center line to begin with, even beginners pull their elbows to the outside the second you grab it. 2. when you transition from the lock over the shoulders to the next position where your taking an angle on your opponent, what if he postures up?, you don't have any control of his head in that transition.
The elbow is locked inside your hips so there is really no way to just posture up. Your opponent can stand up but he will just lift you up with him once you have secured the armbar and press your knees together tight.
On the last rotation to finish instead of grabbing his leg with the right hand if you undertook his left shoulder and secure it, you will prevent your opponent from creating space and pulling out his arm guaranteeing you can finish from bottom
I don't like John verbal excesses but this makes total sense. Been drilling the beginner arm bar with white belts lately and mentioning in passing that in 8 years I have never arm barred anybody with this technique. Most academies teach a bunch of techniques that don't work period, be it on white belts or black belts. If I were the instructor I would teach the more complex technique that will actually work if you master it than the one that won't work ever.
I’m having a hard time getting my hips up higher once I have the set up. Like my brain gets it but my body literally won’t allow me to do it! Any tips for getting my hips up higher?
My problem was getting the arm legs around in position but not able to finish due to partner standing up. Smashing me over Maybe I’m not pivoting either. Def gonna try to leg hook next time
Not much, when doing Gi I like to have a deep cross collar grip. Then having a grip on their sleeve to pull across to line their elbow up with the centre of your stomach. So where John is controlling head by grabbing round it, the collar can be used in the same way.
@@StHelensKarate same. I normally use a cross collar grip as well. I use this in my no gi game but with the gi I fall back on more traditionally taught techniques. This video has me curious on improving my armbars off my back. 🤔
there's a variation done roger grace somewhere in youtube, he uses a cross collar grip to control posture and use the same side elbow to bring the opponent's attacked elbow closer to the center line although he doesn't use the shoulder pivot to get angle
If you’d like to know my variation on this arm bar that works well with me. Use hips to move opponent arms into correct position to start. Use the traditional cross body grip and the arm at the same side of the body control the head (Danaher does it slightly different in the video and hold the elbow with normal grip but shows tradition grip complaining. I still believe it’s best grip for control and just break posture with the other hand!. You build legs higher up their back and make sure they are over the shoulder other it won’t work. To get over the shoulder I keep everything close together and push their shoulder back with arm that controls the arm. Also when it’s all right and u have posture heals down with legs and one arm, use arm that’s not doing them to rotate as their arm is stuck and controlling posture is more important to keep arm bar than holding their arm during. Rest you will know. But that’s my extra steps I hope they help. Reason I sent this was I was drilling today with some resistance from partner and they made it a lot more successful
Never understood why John doesnt switch hands for the head control and arm control, the way he does it doesnt seem as efficient, anyone have an explanation?
Was anyone else told to place your foot in the hip on the same side as the arm your attacking as a first move? I'm super curious if Danaher ever does this or if he'd just consider it incorrect
not really but you should be applying a lot of pressure with your leg that is on the head to prevent it in the first place. There are counters to the stack such as a pendulum sweep like he showed or by going belly down or something
prandz420 No, he has another counter for the stack. It's on youtube basically you direct your leverage. Away from their posted foot. Changing positions putting them on their back to finish.

3:05 is where the partner gets his elbow out mostly when you're spinning for the final angle and step over the head.
What to do about that ?
