Thank you very much, it's always a great pleasure as a Frenchman to see Manu's incredible international success. You know how to elegantly showcase all his formidable "savoir faire" and "savoir être", while getting even older :D I've been a fan of Manu for years and he's an incredible artist who's always accessible and always so professional. From my point of view, he's not recognized at the same level in France as he is internationally, and that's a shame. In France, musicians of Manu's stature are still not given enough recognition, despite his incredible career. Manu has made a huge contribution to the world of drums and music. Immense gratitude. Sorry for my broken English, I hope I made myself understood.
Ah Manu , met him twice in studios in London. One of my favs Manu tracks Tears for Fears Badman song !! I guarantee you will be on the floor ! What a great guy. He's always got time for everyone.
Thanks John, as always. Manu was a huge influence for so many of us. "So" is a massive, landmark album, and that's only scratching the surface of all he's given us. Fascinating to hear how his style evolved because of working with Peter Gabriel and Daniel Lanois. We kind of don't know the version of him from before that. Those Robbie Robertson tracks are underrated jems. ❤ That 6" A splash was basically Manu's signature cymbal. 🙃 His sounds were so great, and it's clear that his touch was always so special.
Thanks so much for this interview! Manu is one of my favorite drummers ever and seems like about the nicest human being that you could ever meet. I've watched many interviews with him and that comes through each time. I've also been fortunate to see him live with both Sting and Peter Gabriel. An amazing talent.
Wow. You nailed it with saying you can see and hear the joy of music and drumming with Manu and watching him listen to In your Eyes you can see his smile of knowing he played an amazing track. Another great episode John and Manu!!!
Thank you for this. I am a saxophonist and was way into SO when it came out as well as Garbarek but at the time didn’t quite make the musical connection. Now i feel it very strongly. i am most impressed with Manu’s choice to play with Garbarek after doing all the mega tours with Gabriel, Sting etc. Plainly put, Manu is all about the music. I would love to feel that pop with me on stage.
Super conversation. And tucked away in a quiet corner of a genial drum chat, there's a deep insight into the mind and the manners of Mark Knopfler. Thankyou John, this series is a treasure trove.
Thank you John for this one. Since Manu is my favorite drummer ( along with Charlie and Tony ) here’s a little selection of great songs you may not have heard 1/ Bernard Song - Veronique Sanson - Sanson à Olympia 89 I was there, he plays this fast 16th groove one handed and goes between a piccolo snare ( could have been a Brady) to his main snare - Absolutely stunning grove and it’s the first tune of the evening, you hear the public then him banging… 2/ My Secret Place - Joni Mitchell - Chalk Mark on a rainstorm It’s a March, could have been Gadd but it’s undisputed Manu who could have come with a part like this 3/ Stop on by - Paul Young - Other Voices There a video floating around on UA-cam when you here them trying to find the groove and it’s not a obvious one. It’s a Manu Katche festival starting with a rim click and open hi-hats then he goes to heavy straight heights then shuffling with a very active left hand - A masterpiece of fell and groove with the voice of Chaka Khan 4/ All his ECM solo albums, one of my favorite is Take Off and Land, again 16ths on the hats and active left hand , Toms, splashes, rolls you name it you’ve got everything in it. A must see is the making of Joe Satriani album when we are witnessing him not be happy with Manu’s playing against the producer opinion. Manu is still on the album that ended up to be a favorite amongst the fans If you want more I have more, let me know - Peace
Thanks for the tips here. I need to explore more of these. I'm a huge fan of the ECM self-titled album. My phone ringtone is "Running After Years" and many cuts on that record are favorites of mine. What a fine band! I also agree about "My Secret Place" by Joni and Peter Gabriel.
Thanks John and Manu for an interesting discussion about his career. My first exposure was when Manu played with Peter Gabriel. His sound, approach and subtleties attracted me to his performance.❤
I don't think young drummers will understand the impact that Manu had when he showed up. It was like, in the span of a week, or a month of the release of So, everyone was like... " What ? who is this guy ? " His impact cannot be overstated..
Thanks everyone. 👍❤️

one of my favorite drummers of all time!! :)
What a great interview. Manu is such a lovely and humble guy and really hope one day I meet him in person in France.

And I love the story about Manfred Eicher hearing the Robbie Robertson track while driving in Munich…
Nicely smashed John! A “wow” drummer!😀👍

Wonderful interview. A true artist. Thank you both.
Manu seemed particularly entranced by hearing “Showdown at Big Sky”. That was super cool.
Thanks John and Manu for an interesting discussion about his career. My first exposure was when Manu played with Peter Gabriel. His sound, approach and subtleties attracted me to his performance.❤
He has a unique approach and plays to the music, doesn't need to flash all of his chops all of the time. Great taste!
looking forward to watch this later!
Great interview great tracks that Manu has done over the yrs super player!
Oh yea!
Iconic Legeandary Drum Track🏆👏👏👏
Another great episode from the drum room. Such tantalising and inspiring conversations. I love it.
Big JD!!!!!!!! Fantastic interview, I saw Manu and Peter Gabriel at The Forum in 1986!
@@thetype85 Big Dan! Thanks for watching! 🙏❤️
Awesome interview, John!! Manu continues to be an exceptional musician.
Manu fuente de inspiración constante !! Musicalidad única e inigualable !!!
Thanks for this J & M 🙏🏻

@@mannys1930 I remember. He was everywhere after that record. Thanks for watching. 🙏
@@livefrommydrumroom Dude... Soul Cages ? That's SUCH a great record... Ridiculous.. I saw that tour in NYC but he had hired Vinnie by then..
I had a splash cymbal on my kit since the age of 14, BUT didn't understand how to use it until I heard Manu on the SO album. Great interview!
A great one John love Manu! Excellent interview!
Great player thanks for this
Manus album Neighbourhood is worth checking out...
Is my favourite 🙏
Fantastique.
Sage advice. Be yourself… no matter what you do
🤩⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
So rad!
Thank you!
John... did you produce that Zildjian video where Manu plays the same song 3X with different approaches ? That is so bad ass....
I didn't produce it.
Played with Kate Bush, her drummer of choice
Im sorry but manu did not yet have a signature snare in 86 it came much later... I wish he could answer the snare question regarding So.
Lanwah (Lanois) … French Canadian …
Manu is French and didn’t correct him. Is this really the takeaway from the entire interview?
@@drummer78 🎯 I heard it, but I didn't feel like I had to run in here and correct anyone. 🤷♂️
