SIX STEAM SPECTACULAR: With Banking, Clanking and Synchronised Sound!

- Probably the most ambitious Neville Grove video yet - this one features 5 steam hauled trains plus a banking locomotive pushing hard at the rear of a scale length freight.
See the whole banking procedure from the approaching goods train "whistling ahead" for assistance, right through to the banking engine dropping away from the guards van at the summit and returning for its next duty at the rear of another train.
The continuous sequence at "Vigo Lock" shows both locos working hard on the same train. The video footage has been accompanied, uninterrupted, by a classic Peter Handford recording of two clapped out, but ever strong 8F's on the Heart of Wales Line in the 1960's near Llangunllo. The scene was created on the model railway using two 8F's working a train of matching length and speed as the archive recording.
With resident 8F 48045 on banking duties, the sequence was only possible because a second 8F (also 48045 by extraordinary coincidence!) was sent by @BlufferstoBuffers and had just been outshopped from the Neville Grove weathering workshop. Since named Colin, this filthiest of filthy locos can also be seen at work on their excellent UA-cam channel. Be sure to check them out!
A constant source of inspiration for me are the recordings of Peter Handford that were taken during the last two decades of steam trains on British Railways. Thank goodness that a large portion of his work is available in digital format via Old Thundridge Records who have been kind enough to grant me permission to use the material. Thoroughly recommended, take a look at the link below:

Last week I was blown away by some recent superb footage taken by @sam6200 of Jubilee "Leander" roaring through the Mallerstang Valley towards Ais Gill Summit. I had to include this in a video and is used here in the opening sequences of my Bachmann model of "Alberta". Again, the audio has been used with kind permission from the owner, Thanks Sam. See the actual video here:
• Leander performs well ...
This is the best model railway action with sound ever, without a doubt.
Wow thanks Steven! I’ve always loved the sound of the railway as much as the sights. Thanks for watching and merry Christmas 🎄
American here. Steam and aircraft enthusiast.
Grew up around Union Pacific. Cousin was a fireman on UP's 844 back in the 80's
Very realistic work. Took me a few seconds to realize this was not 1:1 scale.😄
Great to hear and glad you enjoyed - welcome aboard. I’d love to see & hear 844 working hard one day - or the Challenger if it ever runs again - definitely on my bucket list!
By far and away the very best model railway video ever, so realistic and matching sound,
Thanks Norman for such a nice comment! 🙌 Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow
Sounds,Picturisation,Motion
Extraordinary work.
Great thanks for sharing memories
Aside from those two 8F's sharing the same running number this was perfect.
Thanks! Yeah unavoidable unfortunately as by coincidence my customers one had the same number as mine. What were the chances? 1 in 852? 😂
Absolutely b****y brilliant!!! All synced to perfection, loving the two track running and what a beautiful, disgustingly dirty 8F!!!👍
Thanks Bob! Glad you enjoyed this vid, it took a fair bit of working out 😅
A dirty loco is a happy loco... 👍
@@BassandoForte An 8F wears filth like a favourite old slipper! 👌
Just How I Remember Those 8fs Outstanding Realism
That’s great to know thanks Robin - must have been fantastic witnessing BR steam hard at work, particularly on long, heavy goods trains - a sight and sound that’s seldom recreated in 1:1 unfortunately.
You have a amazing layout, love the rolling stock. Great filming style and soundtrack. Thankyou.
Thank you very much, and not at all it’s a real pleasure making these videos (at least it is when my phone has enough available storage 😅).
....I can almost smell the smoke and steam. The skylark singing in the back ground just captured those long lost summer days. Absolutely amazing modelling and production.
Thanks very much Dave, smell-o-vision would be wonderful!
Magnifique matériel roulant à des vitesses très réalistes. La sonorisation synchrone des locomotives est remarquable . Bravo , bravissimo!
Merci Beaucoup Pierre!
What a bloody good railway my chap!
Cool thanks! 👍👍👍
Fantastic layout, must be one of the best and with some of the best filming I have seen many thanks for posting 👍
Many thanks Knappster glad you enjoyed it!
These are really cool, love the sound effects
Thanks very much - the sounds of the real railway are so evocative in their own right, thank goodness for Peter Handford!
Surprised to see you here! Love your videos
Most impressive, took me back to my childhood, what an amazing presentation absolutely first class.
Awesome thank you, and thanks very much for watching!
This is INCREDIBLE 🤩🤩 absolutely the best one yet - seriously impressive. It’s so authentic it feels like a window into the past. I’m definitely having this on loop 😂 thanks for sharing and constantly raising the bar - it’s such an inspiration to me!
Thanks dude, this was good fun to produce but not without its challenges 😅 A window into the past - that’s exactly how I feel about Peter Handford recordings. He captured workings in audio such as this that can never be properly recreated, despite having a truly wonderful preservation movement hear in the UK. I’m looking forward to seeing more on your new channel - keep up the great work! 👍
Love the video filming especially the close rolling shots. And the weathering is superb, even the wagons!
What an absolute joy to watch. thankyou.
Thanks Stephen, I’m so glad you enjoyed 👍
Superb synchronisation and weathering. Feels like archive footage.
Thanks Alan, glad you enjoyed it 👍
spectacular. memories all over again of the Tizer years
Thanks very much indeed! Get some Tizer in for the next video! 🍻
Wonderful video. Thanks for sharing. Roy.
Hi Roy, thanks so much, I’m glad you enjoyed the show!
Rarely do I watch a layout video all the way through but this was a joy to watch. The eye level views shifting from side to side, the sweeping aerial views, the authentic weathering, (that 2-8-0) , the background and foreground soundtracks and the rare as hens's teeth scale speeds of the trains themselves... Absolutely love it.
The weathering looks amazing and the sounds just complete the scene
Thanks very much indeed, and thanks for watching!
Great video and superbly put together
Thanks very much indeed, glad you enjoyed 👍
Absolutely brilliant. Best layout on UA-cam
Big praise Thomas but thank you very very much indeed! Glad you enjoyed 👍
@@NEVILLEGROVE there’s certainly other layouts out there that I enjoy watching, but nothing comes close to your weathering, sound sync and smooth running ! Love the glossy finish on the Loco paintwork, how do you achieve it ? Cheers
@@TheGarageRailway thanks again! Super kind words. To get the polished effect I usually use a gloss varnish in conjunction with some light weathering. I have also used TCut which can also yield nice results and you don’t need an airbrush to use.
Have been following your series from way Down Under! I especially loved the Bullieds, being a Southern man.
Coś pięknego. Dźwięki starej kolei na tej makiecie, dla mnie emerytowanego kolejarza, kiedyś maszynisty parowozu, to miód na uszy.
Dziękuję bardzo 👍
Weathering perfection. A brilliant job all round!
Thanks very much, I’m glad you enjoyed it 👍
Good show. The sound is superb.
Thank you! In case you missed the caption the Jubilee working hard was taken from video footage made a couple of weeks ago of Leander, (link in caption) but all other sounds are archive recordings made by the late, great Peter Handford back in the 1950 & 60’s. They are brilliant 👌
What an amazing layout. Love how dirty some of the engines are. Fantastic sound, so realistic. Well done. Thank you for sharing 👍
Thanks a lot Charlotte and for watching - I’m glad you enjoyed! 👍
Oh my Days, Loved the Skylarks View, also the Synchronised wheel slip. This has deffo been taken to another level and then some! Many thanks for progressive Setting of Standards, just how high can the bar go! 🤩🏆🥇
Thanks Donni for such a glowing comment! 🙌 Glad you enjoyed it 👍👍👍
Excellent 2-6-0 Crab. Sounded right.
Yeah I love a crab! I have several fantastic Peter Handford recordings of them working back in the day.
Stunning! Thanks for sharing.
You are very welcome! Thank for watching!
The scenery of your layouts and the cinematography always make it feel so real, as does the sound. The banking sequence was incredible, with the local train passing it making it feel like a real, populated, active mainline. Stunning work!
Thank you very much indeed for your very kind words! It was a challenge to put together, but its amazing what you can do on your phone these days!
That really is sheer brilliance! I really, really enjoyed that. Probably the most satisfying video I've seen on UA-cam. I take my hat off to you Sir!
Thanks Mark, glad you enjoyed it and that’s amazing to hear 😊
Best video yet, loved it !
Cool! 😎 I’m really glad to hear that as it is certainly my most ambitious to date, thanks! 👍
Wow! The sound synchronisation with the loco driving wheels is the best I have ever seen and heard, ! The time and effort to produce this video has really paid off! Superb work!!
Cool! I’m glad you think so and thanks for watching. It is a lot of planning, filming and editing, but I do enjoy it and comments like this make it all the more worthwhile - thank you!
What a fantastic video. Made me feel as I was really there. Some really well thought out running shots made into a great story. Top drawer!
Thanks very much I’m glad you enjoyed and that’s great to hear 🙌
The best I've ever seen!!! Congratulations. Brilliant!!!
Really? Wow thanks Bernhard! Glad you enjoyed 👍
Told you that you’d make it by end of July 😉 very well deserved and what an epic video to celebrate 🤘 best channel on UA-cam IMO 💥💥
Yes you did indeed 😂 Thanks for the kind words and for sending Colin that made this video possible 🙌 Extremely generous words actually, but then seeing as your locos often perform starring roles maybe your more than a little biased 🍻
Extremely well done, wonderful scenery and loved the dubbed sound.
Glad you enjoyed it, the full length / unedited archive sounds by Peter Handford are wonderful in their own right, but also make a huge difference to the video. Many thanks Tom!
The work you put into these is incredible and superb to watch.
Thank you very much Mike! Glad you enjoy them.
Ohhhh! Bravo!!!!! Incredible!!! Beautifully!!! Greetings from Prague. 🙂
Many thanks Pavel, glad you enjoyed 👍
@@NEVILLEGROVE I'm not good in English. Thank you for your kind response.
I will add:
I would like to trade my real life for life in the miniature world of these railways.
Good luck and success! ;-)
@@pavelkajetan888 I often think the same thing! Much simpler in 1:76!
@@NEVILLEGROVE It is evident from the shots from that camera 🙂
This is so good, I thought I was watching 7mm.
Thanks very much indeed, and thanks for watching! That really is a compliment.
Beautifully filmed and timed sound sync. Very impressive!
Awesome thank you Alan, and thanks very much for watching!
Your videos always amaze me great work!
Awesome, that’s great to hear thank you! 👍
Absolutely brilliant
Amazing. There is nothing like these videos anywhere else on UA-cam! If you've just come across this example then subscribe and explore the others on the site. The sound editing on this video is just extraordinary. Peter Handford would be delighted to see his work live on like this.
Thanks MrT for the extremely generous praise. Now there’s a thought, I wonder what he would have made if it? 🤔
Pretty impressive! Great sound synchronisation.
Amazing, spot on👍👍
I only can say , WOW perfect!!!
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
Dźwięki tych modeli to dla mnie jak miód na uszy
Dziękuję! Nie ma lepszego dźwięku niż ciężko pracująca lokomotywa parowa.
What a layout superb💪💪💪💪
Cheers Neil, and thanks for watching.
Special 😀
Beautiful video.
Gee thanks - glad you enjoyed 👍
This is so good that you should make it into a television show called the tracks of Neville grove
: )
Thank you so much and I love the ambition! I’ll need to put a team together to get enough material and another team to edit! 😂
@@NEVILLEGROVE i could make scripts
Excellent filming, very well made video really enjoyed watching.
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching!
Great! Very beautiful!
Thanks very much! 👍
Fantastic !
Cheers Gav! 👍👍👍
Nice video today thanks
Thank you, and thanks for watching 👍
The sound on here is bloody fantastic.
I thoroughly recommend the archive sound recorded by Peter Handford. The excellent audio of the Jubilee in full flight was taken from a video taken last week of Leander approaching Ais Gill. Great shot, thoroughly recommended- see link near the end of my video and in the text of my description.
Amazing 🤩
Cheers Johan, and thanks for watching! 👍
wow awesome video!
Glad you think so! Thanks so much for watching.
The sound is just perfect 👍
Thanks, the audio tracks are superb and a wonderful resource for videos like this.
Fantastic video, but both 8f locos seem to have the same number 48045!! 🤔 Love the loco weathering and scenery. Perfect.
Thank you very much! You’re eyes are not deceiving you - the banking 8F with the Stanier tender is mine and I renumbered it from LMS 8042 a while back, whereas the train engine was only visiting my weathering studio from my customer @blufferstobuffers Considering I had hundreds of 8F's to renumber mine to, it was just an extraordinary coincidence. For what it’s worth, 48045 did run with both types of tender in the late crest period.
@@NEVILLEGROVE Haha, thanks for that. Glad my eyes are ok, as I drive for GBRf!!! Phew :) Really loved the video and will take a look at the others. Fantastic layout and the details are just amazing.
@@railfreightdrivergallagherGBRf I know GBRF don’t have any 37’s but you might enjoy Triple Tractor Trash anyway. Plenty more diesel videos to come too. You have my dream job by the way!
Inspirational.................cheer's Tony
Thanks Tony! Glad you enjoyed 👍
Excellent!
Thank you and thanks for watching 👍
This one is great. No... it is magic!
The scenery looks like the real landscape, which is beautiful.
The rolling stock, so perfectly weathered and detailed.
Every little sound...
To sum up, this is superb! Congratulations from argentina. Cheers!
Thank you for the super kind words - amazing to have you watching all the way over there in Argentina! Glad you enjoyed it 👍👍👍
What a superb layout. Can't fault it (apart from the tension-lock couplings!)
I’m glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!
Nice job 👌😎
Thanks ✌
Top shelf 👍
😂 Thanks very much! 👍
This is really good!
Thanks Mats, glad you think so!
Most of those engines are exactly the livery I remember. Midland Region dustbin grey with BR priming.
Excellent stuff.
Hahaha! I actually quite like it, if I ever win the lottery I would love to buy a Black 5 or 8F and out shop it in that livery. Something that preservation rarely recreates - for understandable reasons.
Superb filming editing and audio not to mention the model. Cheers.
Many thanks Steve, glad you enjoyed it!
Who exactly would dislike this video..??
UA-cam should make people give reasons...
Anyway this is one of the most realistic layouts I've seen... 👍
Thank you Andy very kind! I don’t know I’ve never “disliked” anything on UA-cam either, but it might be because it unexpectedly came up on “watch next” and was watched by someone that has no interest in trains at all. I think if you dislike something, the UA-cam algorithm tries to make sure you don’t get similar videos suggested again - a bit like on Netflix 🤔
JUST WOW!!! So good!
🙌 Big thanks that’s super kind 👍
This is pretty awesome! Well done sir!
You got a new subscriber - Many greetings from Berlin!
Great to know! Thank you and welcome aboard - plenty more to come!
Well, that was quite something.
Cool 😎 Glad you enjoyed and thanks for the comment 👍
That was awesome
Thank you Francis! 👍
Wunderbar!!!! Tolle Alterung. Schöner und passender Sound. Das wirkt wie in 1:1. Mach weiter so und wir erfreuen uns an deinen schöne Aufnahmen. Real Modellrailway
Danke sehre!
What a fantastic relief from seeing the Olympics for the last fortnight!
😂 The Premier League starts again in less than 2 weeks!
Tip top !
Thank you kind sir!
Super 👍👍👍
Thank you very much 👍👍👍
Impressive camera work!
Thank you very much - some shots needed several takes! 😅
A rare treat indeed, 👏👏👏👏
Cool! Glad you enjoyed it! 😎
Absolutely brilliant Steve. I've noticed a couple of other YuoTubers trying to copy your style which was inevitable but you are in a different league and top of it..............................Mouldy Rasberry's pretty good too.
Hi Steve thanks for watching and thanks very much! Yes Mouldy Rasberry is very good indeed and what a layout!
The true Edward and Gordon story is done right.
Two 48045s??? Your weathering is perfect though!
Hi Ron thanks for watching again! Haha yes I wondered how many would notice that. By pure coincidence I renumbered mine to 48045 (could have chosen any other BR 8F), and then a few months later my customer sent his in for weathering with exactly the same number. What are the chances? 1 in 624? You couldn’t make it up, but it did run with both tender styles in the late crest era - not that you can see it on either model…
Very, very good. Have always thought con rod clank should feature on sound equipped locos. Make rail clack a feature generated at or by the trackworks. As a ,trackside' 'spectator' all wheels of a train crossing a joint should audible, so the sound or a generated 'sound bite' should be the result detecting the wheels (or axle) as they pass a 'joint'. The other way is to build track above a sound box which amplifies the track sounds. (a feature of Millers Dale O gauge Layout). The feature which is impractical to generate is the clash of buffers when a freight stops (unless the brake van is perfectly matched) or reverses. Possibly needs an audio track from a real train matched to train control. Drop in voltage triggers sound track.
A lot to consider there for the manufacturers but your right, the railway is (was) so rich with various sounds. The potential for DCC to develop further seems limitless.
Excelente
Thanks Juan! 🙌
Great camera work and truly amazing synchronized sound ! Congrats !
(just missing realistic smoke, but of course, this is asking for too much!)
Thanks very much! Yes nothing out there i my opinion is convincing or affordable as yet in OO Gauge - that's why I modelled the layout in the height of summer and on a hot summers day! Obviously not 2021 then.
Lots of well known Peter Handford recordings here.
Thank goodness for his foresight, and the execution of the recordings was masterful.
Good video, I subscribe
Awesome, thank you!
Spot on video!! If there was an Oscar for model railway video's I you would get my vote.
Prehaps we could call them a "Beeching"?
Regards Roger.
😂 Well thanks for your vote in advance! Glad you enjoyed 👍
(almost) as good as the real thing! great camera shots too

tak bardzo różne dźwięki, im głośniejsze, tym lepiej!
seem like the high lands greeting from argentina
Ok cool thanks!
WOW !!!!!!!!!
impressive looking (and sounding) trains. Is it likely they will eventually build sound like that into the models?
My father used a room 15 meters by 10, for guage O......Bassett lowke. But, this is quite incredible. What guage is this?
Wow that sounds like an incredible layout! Thanks very much, this is oo gauge.
Excellent as always, but why do the locos have the same number 48045?
Thank you, pure coincidence, I’d renumbered mine some time ago then a customer sent his 8F in for weathering. Against all the odds it was exactly the same class member out of a choice of 800+ The opportunity to run two 8F’s together on NG was to good to miss though.
Top Drawer all round , but why has the banked freight got both engines with the same number, (or are my eyes deceiving me?)
Thank you very much! No they're not deceiving you - the banking 8F with the Stanier tender is mine and I renumbered it from LMS 8042, whereas the train engine was only visiting my weathering studio from my good customer @blufferstobuffers Considering I had hundreds of 8F's to renumber mine to, it was just an extraordinary coincidence. 8045 did run with both types of tender by the way in the late crest period.
