Hi student coder here and I have a question in regards to the characters. When looking at the characters do you consider the period as part of the code IE; A00. and it says that you need a 4th character so A00.0 would be the 4 characters correct? I was told that the period is considered a character
ICD-10-PCS is used specifically for coding inpatient hospital procedures, while ICD-10-CM is used for coding diagnoses in all healthcare settings. If you're focusing on hospital coding, learning ICD-10-PCS will be important, but if you're coding diagnoses, ICD-10-CM is the primary system you'll use. Both serve different purposes in medical coding.
I really don’t understand why we use the book for codes, while we can use google to catch them out specified and totally correct, please tell what’s the difference? Thank you in advance,
While Google is a fantastic tool for quick searches, medical coding is a bit more complex. The coding books, like ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, are the gold standards in the industry. They're comprehensive, regularly updated, and provide the detailed guidelines necessary for accurate coding. Google can give you a general idea, but coding books offer the exact codes and specific guidelines. This is crucial because even a small error can lead to claim rejections or incorrect billing. In medical billing and coding, compliance with regulations is key. The coding books ensure that you're using the most up-to-date and compliant codes, which is something a general Google search might not guarantee. The books include not just the codes, but also important guidelines on how to use them. This includes coding for specific conditions, how to code multiple diagnoses, and more. Using the official coding books is a standard practice in the industry. It shows a commitment to professionalism and accuracy, which is essential in healthcare. So, while Google is great for a lot of things, when it comes to medical coding, the coding books are your best bet for accuracy, compliance, and professional standards. Hope this helps clear things up!
