He’s what happens when chaotic neutral is magnified and taken to its natural conclusion. He isn’t good or bad he just wants to mess with everything and everyone. The problem with that is it ends up becoming bad for everyone that gets caught up in it.
My big gripe about the Beetlejuice movies, is that he is the only one that keeps his end up of the bargains. He does what they ask him to do and then gets betrayed.
Only Keaton's answer was genuine and honest. Beetlejuice is like playing with fire. Definitely a selfish villain willing to kill if it helps him somehow. His abilities so powerful that they even tease him to be on the dark side, who is gonna punish him? Not many....
He is the definition of amorality. He’s neither moral or immoral, he’s more like a trickster god like Loki. He does whatever the situation calls for for himself.
My daughter grew up watching Beetlejuice. She watched it for the first time when she was 5 and it's one of her favorite Tim Burton movies. Who btw is her favorite director and she takes inspiration for her artwork from him.
Really it depends on what happens if he gets what he wants. He's rebelling against a system that punished him for how he died. He is also always trying to scam others, with the Maitlands he called them as suckers and used them to get closer to his own goals. It all comes down to what happens if he gets what he wants.
Beetlejuice was never an evil guy. He’s just a misunderstood ghoul who just wanted someone to love him. And never got that, which led to his demise. He keeps his end of the deal, and helps out when he gets something out of it. But no he’s not a villian. I find him adorable, charming, and lovable ☺️💚💚💚💚
Beetlejuice is a villain, but as stated, he is a villain that a lot of people like. He is creepy, selfish, and not against killing. The only reason he was willing to do what he was doing was that he wanted to return to the world of the living without the restrictions. He was not even holding back on how little anything besides him getting what he wanted mattered to him in the first film. He pulls a finger from his pocket to take the ring off of it, and it is that mentality that gets him into more trouble. The fact that he sees the world as nothing more than a playground kind of pulls you in unexpectedly. It was what all of the characters in the first film wanted. The other characters we think of as being villains in the first film were the same way, but without his abilities.
Beetlejuice isn’t evil. He never forced Lydia to marry him. He made a deal with her. She needed him to save the mainlands from an exorcism. Not a bad guy.
He's literally the embodiment of chaos and mayhem that does more than just scare the living and enjoys every bit of pain and torment he causes. His name is feared by other ghosts since even saying his name can summon him... you bet you Sandworm he's a villain!
@Realtrollking2988 after she poisoned him, so while he was dying he basically did a "If I'm going down, you're going with me!" He killed his own murderer.
I would argue that he's just a human that's passed on and had a long time to accumulate power without much change he may even be a bit jaded. At the end of the day he's just as human as anyone else.
To be fair mr b is seen as a villain because hes trying to scam his way into the living world but in his down time he seems like a fun guy to be around, besides he only wanted to marry lidia because it was the easiest way to pull-off a green card scam
I'm on the fence on whether Beetlejuice was a creep for lydia getting married when she's a kid or if it was just a contract. Like when people marry a foreigner so they can get citizenship. Beetlejuice marrying lydia apparently he wouldn't be cursed anymore to be summoned by his name or maybe the marriage was so he could stay among the living. I'm really not sure. This video did say there's something going on between them.
It was indeed a contract with the end goal for him being able to stay among the living. It's pretty clear on that in the original film. The marriage is simply a way for him to be free.
People want to talk about how he tried to force her to marry him, but they never mention the real problem is that he could marry a 15 year old in the first place. He would've married anyone he could IMO
He tries to marry an underage girl against her will. That's not a "prank". He is the villain of the movie, tricking the heroes into "quick fix" solutions that come with strings attached.
He’s a trickster. They’re meant to ride the line between good and bad. Also, it’s so good to hear that Michael made the original film such a positive experience for Winona. It’s so often the opposite for young actors back in the day.
Already been 2x to the cinema, wish there would be 20-30 min more Keaton/ Beetlejuice in it - can't get enough now 💚🎬 Great song selection - Tim Burton = brilliant as ever ⭐️
HERE’S THE THING!!! A true psychopath would hold a grudge towards anyone who slights and/or rejects him or her. Lydia has done both to Beetlejuice. Yet, he genuinely still cares for her. Is he a creep? Absolutely. Is he dangerous? For sure. Is he purely evil? Not at all.
Not since Ferris Bueller has there been a villain so likable that they charm you out of all awareness of what they really are. Yes, Ferris Bueller was the bad guy in that movie! Case in point of how he charmed you into thinking he was the protagonist lol.
BJ is chaotic neutral for sure. Self-serving, arrogant, salesman type. Maybe narcissistic. But hell, he's objectively likable, so maybe not so much a narcissist as knows his worth.)
Well, given the character died during the Black Plague, being married at 15 was actually common and acceptable at the time, so he wouldn't see a problem with it.
Anti-hero? He's an anti-hero because he's one of my favorites and almost all my favorite characters are anti-hero. Punisher, Jack Skellington, The Crow etc etc etc
Beetlejuice is definitely a villain. Just not the pure evil kind. The man spent his life as a con-man and a grave robber. And he only got more deplorable after death. Beetlejuice being likeable doesn't change his mildly evil nature.
Haven't seen the second movie, so I'm not sure if his role changes, but in the first movie, yeah, kind of. The first movie has two antagonists; Beetlejuice and the living interlopers in the Maitlands' home. The Deetz family (excluding Lydia), is more of an annoyance to the Maitlands except for that exorcism scene where they pose an actual danger to the main characters. Beetlejuice, on the other hand, is happy to cause harm, and is a huge creep towards Lydia. It's a comedy, so of course Beetlejuice is fun. But comic elements aside, he's a bad guy.
He's not a bad guy but he's just having fun and is a freak Also It was my gateway into horror movies it falls into the same boat as evil dead it's splatstick witch is my favorite kind of horror movies there's something just sooo fun about it
A lot of people says he's a predator, but if you watch the second movie, he is clearly sexually interested in his ex-girlfriend which tries to destroy him throughout the film. He was never like that with Lydia, never did he ever try to pursue her.
Beetlejuice is antagonist but isn’t evil when doesn’t harm anyone but a wacky trickster demon antihero which he’s a chaotic troublemaker out of his naughty stuff😂 and also alerted of ever say his 3 time name Infront of him or having talks with, then he’d be Poofing away in out of sight!😂 when only other around too call out in need for ‘help’ but not ever say his name at his presence 😂
he definitely functions are a villain because he is selfish, so if its in his interest to be the villain he will be. if he needs to be the hero, and its in his interest to be, he will be. A hero for hire, or opportunistic villain. hes more fun as a villain
If he’s a villain because he’s selfish. 90% of humans (or more) are villains. That’s an old argument. Does altruism actually exist. Does anyone do anything purely from an unselfish standpoint.
"Villain" is the wrong word here. The best term would be an anthropological term used in mythology - "trickster". He can fulfill both good and bad roles in a myth, often both in paralel. But that does not mean he can;t be dangerous or detrimental for the protagonists at times.
Beetlejuice isn’t a villain, he’s chaotic neutral. And he acts helpful when it’s beneficial to him. He’s an antagonist but not a villain.
I've used these exact same words to describe Beetlejuice. It's really the best description of him.
Best answer
I think that basically he's a mischievous ghost (a poltergeist), but not in an evil way.
He’s rude, crude, and socially unacceptable, but he’s not actually evil. He’s “extra” and wacky in a macabre way, but he’s not villainous.
He’s a Poltergeist.
He could be if he married Lydia and could stay out in the living world he may become a menace
He’s what happens when chaotic neutral is magnified and taken to its natural conclusion. He isn’t good or bad he just wants to mess with everything and everyone. The problem with that is it ends up becoming bad for everyone that gets caught up in it.
he could have killed Lydia's dad when he was a snake tho

Hah! Winona has made herself clear several times now that she is Team Beetlejuice and 100% ships him and Lydia.

I ship Beetlejuice and Lydia
My big gripe about the Beetlejuice movies, is that he is the only one that keeps his end up of the bargains. He does what they ask him to do and then gets betrayed.
Beetlejuic's chemistry with Lydia is hilarious and weirdly adorable. Winona Also admitted she wanted Lydia and Beetlejuice to end up together.

He's chaotic neutral. No rules and he's ultimately out for himself.
