The cone air filter is weird. The air filter is on the passenger side just above the battery, inside the big metal drum. I don't know where that aftermarket filter is plumbed to. Is it even connected to anything? New brake resi. Looks like it's had some rehab in the motor. Underside looks good. Get rid of the running boards. They have them bolted to the body pinch weld and frame. It will mess up the body. Stock boards are probably as expensive as a set of sliders. Since you're offroading, real rock sliders might be a good idea. Worth keeping if you can get the smell out. New seat leather and cushions are available for not insane money. It's a expensive detailer and upolstery shop away from being a decent off roader.
I'm sure you already know this or have had it suggested, but Ozone generators are not terribly expensive and should make a significant dent in reducing the cigarette smell from the previous owner. If left in too long it can cause issues with making plastics and other materials more brittle. Keep it stock I will definitely be following this and the recent Northstar addition to the fleet. I have stopped at 5 vehicles and have continued to collect vintage mountain and other bikes with an early 90's Haro Extreme and GT Karakoram, only mentioning because of your previous episode about automotive impact on cities and sustainability, Cheers!
Keep it stock and put a good set of tires on it. Unless you are HARDCORE off roading, these things are capable stock. Plus, stock means it’ll drive nicer on road and be less needy for maintenance.
I would keep it stock engine wise for the most part, then beef up the suspension and make sure all the maintenance is good and it looks like you finally got a good one from an auction!
The underside & frame look great! She's a little rough around the edges, but it has good bones. I agree- clean it up, and then enjoy driving it while you get around to fixing all the little things. Cool 80 Series easter egg is the hidden keyhole on the hatch that you can twist the chrome logo up to reveal.
Join some 80 Series groups and you'll probably find a deal on some OEM rocker panels - they're one of the first things people take off when they do any kind of offroad/overland build.
Solid purchase. None of the problems look particularly serious, and they're the sorts of things that can be tackled one by one as you enjoy it. I'd keep it near stock. Add some sort of push bar/grill guard to protect the front end, and attach the lights to that. One place I wouldn't scrimp would be to buy some really high quality shocks. They'll hold up better and can make a big difference in ride quality when you're off pavement.
Dang dude, I think you did great with this one! I would keep it stock, as a family off roader I bet it’s already more than capable for anything you’d actually want to bring the fam along for. Maybe this helped even out the bad karma of the Cadillac 😅
You should take an auto mechanic course. It's short and that way you save on fixing your cars. Also one of the joys of having old cars is the feeling you get when you fix it. For me its therapy.
Not a factory running board, but I think it would look good with some fresh black paint - edit nvm... just saw the rust on the other running board lol.
Always wanted an 80-series LC. I've got a '94 pickup 4x4, '88 pickup 4x4, and an '87 4runner -- all 22re 5 speed -- but the ultimate would be an 80-series LC.
Looks pretty solid underneath and even after the car theft damage, engine starts and runs, typical Toyota quality :) Brings back memory of Top Gear who tried to kill Toyota Hilux but failed to do so :D I vote for keeping it stock.
Such a better fighting chance with a Toyota product, especially it being the legendary Land Cruiser. I've heard that using an Ozone generator with care helps get most any smell out of a car. Just follow the steps carefully. My 2003 Montero Limited (poor person's LC) was a smoker's car that doubled as a storage unit & trash dumpster & I was able to resurrect it. It was actually very gross but also rewarding when done. Looks like a win if the foundation is strong and it looks to be so. Evaluate the engine & transmission before proceeding too far but I'd be thrilled with that LC. Congratulations!
Great Car, bit work but sorry. The rig is over 30years old. Show me some 30years rig that are used normal. Love my FZj80 1993 tripple locked, brings me every where
Love it. 1991 means it’s the slower but more reliable 3FE engine (literally a forklift engine). Pretty much all stock aside from the cheap China side steps. I’d say you paid about what it’s worth all things considered
Two factors tell me to turn this into a fully built "retro off road beast". 1) 1991 FJ80's are the slower of the 80s. FZJ80 got some good upgrades to the engine and makes them better drivers on the hwy. Also, the 91s don't have a full floating rear axle, which is not something I would off road. 2) It has a savaged title so it's never going to be a restoration build.
I am pretty certain that I saw the same vehicle on a CoPart auction site. We have 2 third generation 4runners and a 96 80 Series Lexus LX450 triple lock Land Cruiser with solid axle. You made the purchase of your lifetime. you will not regret it.
It has always angered me they issue salvage titles for vehicles that have no frame damage. The salvage title was designed to tell future buyers the vehicle was badly damaged. There is no reason a future owner needs to know it is a recovered theft.
You might need to change the upstream oxygen sensors, look at my video on YT, if the car is obd1, its computer won't tell you if they are worn out, don't change the down stream, ie the one between catalyst and muffler, don't even clean and unplug its connector, unless you want to have to buy yourself new catalytic converter.
You did OK. Please don't lift ,put a snorkel on it, etc. You're right, those wheels are so cool. It should be a crime to swap them out for ugly aftermarkets like so many guys do. With that engine you won't be doing much towing.
Do yourself a favor and have the solid front axle rebuilt and put Marlin Crawler aftermarket axle seals in it. The differential fluid has a tendency to mix with the wheel bearing grease after many years and many miles. (and NO it does not have ball joints) the 4Runners had some ball joint issues but the 80 series does not have ball joints.
You should keep the windows cracked to air it out. That's what you should do. And, did I miss something about the Minnie Winnie?! Has there been an introduction?
Ozonator gets rid of smells easy but as far as I know it's forbidden to use one in US for domestic purposes. If so it's a petty because for 40$ you can get a pretty powerful one from AliExpress and it works wonderful
Recover the front seat! Finding all the bits and pieces to have it as close to factory as possible will make it a joy to drive! Old man emu suspension and K02 tires!
Returning to that old Nissan NX dream, did you know there is one for sale in eBay motors (in Massachussets, sorry)? About the Toyota, I think the utilititarian vehicle approach would be better for this vehicle... As you say, it's a salvage vehicle, and it really doesn't worth spending too much money in it...
Typical Land Cruiser! Even with its slight imperfections and other unknown flaws, it starts right up and seems pretty solid overall. Easily something worth fixing and it'll last you a lifetime if all of its maintenance is in check. 💯

really cool rig. i personally wouldn't go crazy with modifying it. id get some good, off road oriented tires in the stock size for sure and maybe some bilstein 4600 series shocks to replaced whats probably very tired old shocks that are on there. i also do not believe that those side steps are a factory part, so id probably get rid of those, and since you wanna make it a camping vehicle of sorts, a sturdy roof rack, rear mounted ladder and roof top tent would likely be the way to go for additional things along with all needed mechanical maintenance & repairs. id also remove those yellow fog lights too, they've seen better days lol. if anything, a higher quality pair of ARB led running lights might be something better to do if you wanted additional lighting
Fix the window, belts, ignition, and then do a tune up and I think you’ll be good. Honestly if I owned that I’d drive it as is! Wash it and clean it first, interior and exterior. Give it a good detail, and then of course the basic maintenance. Then go from there. ❤️
