      Red Scorpion Where I train in Taekwondo they do in fact discuss techniques which are more flashy rather than effective. We discuss all the techniques we are training with and where they may be effective and less so. The instructors are very open about everything and certainly suggest to keep your mind focused and don't just go through the motions. One of many things I like about my club.

    I have watched you for the first time ever and I gotta tell you that I enjoy your mindset. Just having the bravery to publicly examine your art and play the pros and cons in the street or cage is a credit to your system. I'm not an aikidoka but I respect all arts, you've proven once again it's not the art but the artist, who is but a reflection of their teacher. I know you probably have a lot of trolls but any real martial artist will accept your views even if they don't always agree because that is the true essence of martial art. I'm subscribing to your channel for the inspiration alone to continue examining my arts for combat effectiveness.

      An overused platitude in the Martial Arts community that has no basis in reality. The art a person practices can be as useless as tits on a bull, (Taekwondo, for example), and it really doesn't matter how skilled the person, they have little to rely on to support that skill.

    I think the main difficult to connect a Aikido technique in a fight, once you get someone in a technique is quite impossible to escape but how do you get the person in the technique in the first place? that's why i think crosstrain Aikido with some other martial art is so important.

    You can never preempt any technique, no matter what martial art it is.... Any aikido technique will work as long as you adapt it to your situation, your size, the opponents or assailants size, and also strength,....Being quick enough to pull it off, has been my experience... Use what works best for you is my motto Azu... Good to let people know that you use it according to your own interpretations... As you know there are so many variations in aikido, as each technique turns out slightly different from the last, so is in fact infinite in its very nature....

    I love your channel. I do Taekwondo, Hapkido, BJJ, I trained Boxing and I also compete in Mma. I agree with you on the second and third technique but I think the first one is very useful and I've actually used it in an altercation at a bar. I didn't use it in a fight and I wouldn't use it once I fight is already engaged but it's a great technique to use before a fight or altercation before it starts. I used it when I was shaking a guys hand to tell him I had no issue and he refused to let go of my hand so I used that first move and put him on his ass. In Hapkido we call that move bent arm throw. I will post a demonstration video to show how I used it and made it work. I would love for you guys to check it out when I post it and tell me your thoughts. Keep up the awesome videos. You guys are great.

    • @ssw4m
      @ssw4m 7 років тому +3

      Shihonage is a deadly technique, you can rip someone's body in half with it, and this has happened on the street. I know that the video title is basically click bait, or trying to divertion attention from absolutely negative videos, but O'Sensei said that "Shihonage is the foundation of Aikido. All you ever need to master is Shihonage". So it seems disrespectful to say that shihonage is more or less "useless".
      The second "alternative" to aiki otoshi that you showed is in fact aiki otoshi as I know it, and I didn't recognize your first movement when you push their knee sideways. This sokumen iriminage or "kokyu nage" throw, which I think is the basis for aiki otoshi, can be extremely effective, my 9 year old son can get kuzushi and throw me with this.
      Juji garami or "karami nage" might be most useful when the attacker grips your shoulder or front with one hand to hold you still and strikes with the other, this does happen in real life. This is one of the forms studied early on in daito ryu ikkajo. With the juji nage from two punches, I think it helps to change hands twice, which enables you to maintain good grip position easily: block a stright right with right hand then hold it with your left hand (as if for kotegaeshi), then block the stright left with your left hand switching to grip their right hand from underneath with your right. This flows nicely into juji nage. I think it can be a good technique if you don't have much space to move, or if the uke is throwing jabs rather than heavy committed strikes.

    Hi Azu and Ondrej! Thanks for the video!
    Two questions:
    1) In this video, you chose one situation where shihonage technique might not work in a street fight. Have you tried other possible situation in which this technique works?
    2) The way I learned Aiki Otoshi is quite different from you showed in the video, it resembles the version that you showed that works.
    There are some aikido techniques which have no martial value, but they are useful to teach how we could move, etc. Anyway, thanks!

    • @azuspointofview5110
      @azuspointofview5110 7 років тому +3

      Edson Bezerra I'm agree. I'm sure that there are scenarios where all techniques work and we try to find them when we train. There are so many different versions of every technique, some are better than others but practicing all techniques help with your movement even if they are not practical.

    So conversely, which Aikido techniques would be the most useful in said situation?

  • @ruialmeida818
    @ruialmeida818 7 років тому +8

    Well, I have 2 remarks here:
    First - from my understanding (and this is the oppinion commonly shared arround the dojo), the techniques are learning tools mainly. To focus too much on the techniques is, in my oppinion, wrong - learn the essencials each techniques teaches, and reinvent them and reinterpret them - that's Takemusu.
    Second - I actually managed to pull a jiujigarami in a street fight - they grabbed my collar and went for punching my face... in THAT particular case, you have one hand on your collar, which makes it easier to perform that specific technique. However, a nikkyo might be easier (and safer) to perform in that situation. Bottom line, a good technique is the one you manage to use without thinking about.
    Congrats on the video

      Rui Almeida It's great to know that it worked for you, in fact it's inspiring. Your words have made me think and when I'm next in the dojo I will practice my Cross arm throws in a combat sparing situation and see how I can make it work for me. Thank you.

    • @ruialmeida818
      @ruialmeida818 7 років тому +1

      Greetings Azu. Well, as I put it, it worked for me in a very specific situation... I find that the concept of the very technique is, in fact, too specific... if your opponent grabs your collar and punches, it works, but I don't think that it's applicable on some other situation. However, a collar grab in order to repeatedly punch your opponent is something I find common on street of bar fights - but as a bouncer I'm sure you have way more experience with that.
      If you or the guys ever visit Porto - Portugal, please feel free to join us for practice.
      Cheers

    I'm pretty new to these Aikidoflow videos, but I'm really interested. I'm assuming that when Azu says "street fight," he means an actual, real-world scenario as opposed to a controlled sparring session in a dojo, right?
    I'm following these because I ride the train to work sometimes, and twice I've found myself confronting bullies harassing other passengers. Usually it ends in a flurry of insults hurled in my direction before the person gets off the train (one of the times the dude spit in my face), but I was realizing that I'm not really prepared to handle an attack. I've been looking at Krav Maga because it seems like it's geared towards tight spaces and defusing the situation, but I also really love the way that aikido does essentially the same thing but with the well-being of the attacker in mind as well.
    All that to say I'm already looking for an aikido dojo near me where I can learn the stuff properly. Now on to more Aikidoflow videos!

      Chassaj the best lesson is don't believe 90% of the stuff on UA-cam. aikido will work but not instantly. You need to work to acieve the 9 elements. once you have these then the defense part will come naturally. aikido will give you a better footing than some other sport orientated arts but it will take time. I have 16 years in aikido and still learn every day. I have tried other arts and have 30+years of experience. I prefer aikido. and that is the main thing. If you love it. keep doing it. If you want to just learn for fighting then bjj and one of the arts like karate for striking.

    Can you please explain wether or not ikkyo or sankyo works in street fight? I believe none of the technique in basic movements works, but I have imagined doing sankyo, then making him fall on the knee and launching punch in his ribs.
    Is there anychance that there is any base technique which could be applied in real fight? And I have actualy seen police using kotegaeshi to throw criminals on the ground.
    However as my sesnei have told me aikido is hard to use in real life, because even in police work there are 2 officers on 1 suspect, because it's really hard to detain or what so ever..

    On the first technique shihonaga at our dojo we enter and deflect with the left had and strike the opponent (atemi) with the right hand at the same time and then appy shihonaga. The strike disorent the opponent and allows you the time to affect the shiho. I apply atemi as much as possible when i do any aikido techniques. The right had strike is ment to occupy the space so he does not have time to strike you.

    nice video, simpler is better, but sometimes complex techniques will work, but only if your opponent presents the right opening
    the 1st one is too long but I see 3 workable techniques inside it when you first absorb you could drag them down from the 1st position, than when you switch to under his arm you can lock him by just lifting up under elbow and pushing down with your other hand than maybe kicking out the back of the knee to finish the takedown and the final take down after you change directions can work by itself, would this happen in a real fight very unlikely but just about anything is possible if you think of it as 3 actions and they resisted the first action by going forward and you followed with the 2nd move (bent armlock) and they resisted this by going back and than you use the last technique to take them down not fighting but following there resistance and using it against them,
    the 2nd one I've done a similar one in silat except we would brace the outside of their foot with our foot and push the knee across sinking to a ground position to avoid punches but what it actually represented was not a push inside the knee but using a karambit to cut the tendons and ligaments in the knee or if you didn't have a knife my instructor said grab a big rock and smash it into the inside of the knee
    the 3rd one I've also done in silat and kung fu and when I first learned it I felt the same way cool technique for demos but not so much for fighting but since then have used it multiple times in sparring you can't go looking for it but there are times when it does come up and it will work if they do pull back their first arm just strike them as they pullback while pinning the 2nd arm i think anytime you have a technique that is used in a number of unrelated styles from different countries you have to figure it most work at least in some circumstances but if it doesn't work for you of course find something else that works better

  • @J3unG
    @J3unG 7 років тому +1

    Well done, mate. The key concept in this video is to eliminate techniques that are useless for self-defense. I like your analysis of the stuff in the Aikido repertoire that won't work because it is essentially too slow and unrealistic to common assaults The knee thing seems especially pointless. With respect to the last technique with the arms crossed, I can attest that that DOES work in a street fight. It is essentially a trap of a lead punch with a cross follow up (the old one-two). It's a Filipino martial art thing, where if you've sized up a bloke who you think will do the old one-two, you parry and grab the first punch and wait for the second one to come in and cross that punch over the first one. The end result is a trap and you can follow up into some kind of a choke or clothesline (iriminage) technique. THAT will give you submission. They key to this entry is trapping the lead hand and positioning your own hand so that it can use the guy's arm as a lever on the second punch. You want to have your own hand facing palm UP on the first punch so that you can get the guy's second punch trapped as quickly as possible. That position will not hold a guy for very long so you must transition quickly into something else. The trapping is very fast and as long as you understand that it's a starting technique into something else, it will work. I look forward to your next vid. Keep up the good work. BTW, if you do decide to use the 'I ain't messin with that' nugget on a T-shrt, then I would certainly buy one.

    +Aikidoflow How about ...
    1) Use opening block *THEN ADD AN ELBOW STRIKE* (to distract them from throwing anouther strike with the opposite hand to buy you time to...) pull the first arm down and around into the finishing position.
    2) If you're being held down, *PLACE YOUR FOOT BEHIND THEIR LEAD LEG* (that you want to attack) *AND PALM ON PALM PUSH THE KNEE* to collapse them without taking yourself to the ground.
    3) If you're in the clinch, *GRAB EACH HAND SEPERATELY, AND CROSS THEM OVER* to execute.
    Hope this helped you see something extra :-)

    Cool video. Love your guys' approach to Aikido. I'd say the three techniques you demonstrated would require the practitioner to be at top level performance to be able to pull off in a street fight. Anything less and you're going to get halfway through getting set up before you get klocked! I do think there are people out there who could do it but you're talking about lineage holder/ train 8 hours a day kind of people i.e. not your average Aikido person. It's nice to see how you guys keep your attitude realistic without getting condescending or otherwise nasty.

    I will agree with what you are trying to say. There may be times and places for these moves, though there are more useful approaches.
    I remember my teacher when I was first starting with him, always saying to me too many moves. That and I need to focus on my basics.
    I thigh I was being clever. Though would have several moves to lead me to the finish. My teacher was trying to teach me to not try to be fancy so much but go strait ti the finish.
    It took me years of going back and forth like that. Refining what is was doing over and over to fallow my teachers advice to finally be able to look back and realize fully what all he was teaching me and the true importance of it all.

    One of the biggest problems with sooo many of the arts is that as the shortened versions of these arts was created starting about 400 years ago, such as karate which was taken from Gungfu and brought to Okinawa and Japan, is that the TRUE application and THEORY behind these techniques became lost.
    Each one of these type of techniques are either a leading or they're used as a controlling or finishing technique. Just as a rule with kicking, which I see broken ALL THE TIME in movies and in competition fights, is to Never start off with a spinning kick! Those kicks are either MEANT to be used with a distraction first or as a COUNTER to some punch or strike thrown at you. Not every single Punch kick or throw is meant to be used as an immediate counter in a fight.
    For example, you would use such a throw or trap ONLY after you have already hit the opponent a few times when they're dazed or disoriented and can't offer any instant or Strong resistance.
    In Gungfu there are specific techniques you use to attack with, distract and counter with and if you do them at the wrong time then you just don't know what you're doing.
    unfortunately this is the case with almost all the martial arts today as these videos I many others on UA-cam clearly demonstrate in pointing out the problems with so many martial arts today. this was a problem even back in the nineties when I used to visit many schools and it was already a pathetic and sad situation then. Today the problem is laughable by comparison.
    This is all part of the fighting theory, punching and kicking theory and the fighting drills that were deleted from Chinese Gungfu when the Communists took over in 49 and in which many other arts such as the karate family of arts never knew in the first place because it takes years of practice and real sparring with your instructors and Senior students to become proficient in it so you will succeed in a real fight.
    You can watch some of the more real world sparring here from this 85 demo. Keep in mind that this is STILL greatly toned down as the guys were specifically told to "go light" because there would be women and children and some elderly people in the audience to.

    Let's go in numbers:
    1) Someone trying to bottle you and you are out of distance, knife or a bottle stab to the lower part of the belly
    2) Like you mentioned, getting out of being kicked while on the floor. by understanding the direction of the push, you can roll someones leg using your knee
    3) against a left-right straight from boxing, just don't grub on to the arm, control it with your torso ;-)

    I like a lot of your guys video's, but I did aikido for 15 years to 18 years. I don't agee with everything said. The techniques could be useless concerning what type of attack the person is dealing with. Personally I never use aikido against a good striker or a boxer because I found out the hard way when I was a teenager that it doesn't work that well against boxers, but it works great against people who are trying to grab you. Aikido and Jujitsu are great martial arts against grabs. Shionage or jujinage can work great against a grab because there is time, but for strikes it might not work. When I found out that aikido had some flaws against boxers then that is when I found different martial arts, such as the Filipino Pangamot and the Kung Fu San Soo, or even the Wing Chun to fill in the gap that Aikido was lacking. I believe everything works, but a person just needs to understand the proper place for it.

    "Aiki otoshi" looks a lot like a baguazhang foot trap... you can do it entirely with your own shin, into theirs... more of a press than a kick. Harder to learn and master, but easier to execute in a subtle manner.

    • @asteriskcolon
      @asteriskcolon 7 років тому

      Also, Juji nage is awesome for throwing one attacker into the other -- that's the main reason I keep it in mind. For one-on-one, not as much.
      Sankyo is also good for the same, and is more versatile

    • @asteriskcolon
      @asteriskcolon 7 років тому +1

      Also, we get Juji Nage from two-hands-from-behind... if you don't let them break your posture when they grab each arm... it's a grab-and-stab defense... one person grabs both hands, the other comes up to stab, you throw the grabber into the stabber. There are other ways to get there, but that one is particularly easy if they try to grab both your hands behind your back, but you see them coming ahead of time.

    Shihonage orginally was designed to break the elbow over the shoulder when you step under the arm. Curling the arm was an OSensei modification that WILL NOT WORK in the street. So Aikido came from Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu and they break the arm, they do not curl the arm.

    Being the devil's advocate a bit here.1990's in a populated park, a guy off his head on speed/ice starts wielding a rather laden metal garbage can, the type they use to have on the street corners then, and for no apparent reason randomly swings to and fro into a group of shocked teenagers realistically trying to brain them. I stepped in as there was no one else willing to go near it and as he went to do the same to me, I, without thinking, did shihounage thus bonking him on the head with the bin just hard enough to stun him into a closer form of reality to everyone elses as he lay there on his back blanketed by the rubbish.Another night I blocked a high out of the blue ,sneak punch meant for my adult nephew's head as we were casually drinking in a bar. It was similar to the beginnings of ikkyo with out the hip follow through due to where my nephew was. With his lower hand he went to punch me in the stomach, I , again without thinking, dropped the hand that was on his elbow to cut past the incoming underhand fist and moved my centre so that in a way I had reverse loaded up for juji garame and because I was in a bit of a different position I was able to follow through.I guess it depends on what is thrown at you.I heard from a sensei once that aikido techniques are like a string of leggo blocks that can be pulled apart and put together as needs require.I know, as I have done that off dojo informative job of pub security too that this is true and found myself using either the ingrained foot work/body movement or end techniques combined with others to advantage. Shihonage is a great hold to guide someone gently out the door when they grabbed and pushed your shoulder too.

    I took Aikido w/ a friend for 3 years. That same friend was training me in boxing and kick boxing. I quit Aikido when after one night we were putting pads away in the dojo, and sensei remarked a/b us boxing etc. My friend said, if you stood in some of these forms, or tried Aikido techniques against a decent boxer, many of the students would be floored. Sensei, our head instructor challenged my friend to demonstrate. Sensei ended up sleeping on the mat. Never spent another dime on Aikido.

    and as blackbelt practitioners I think you should practice with an uke who can quickly find openings within your techniques and both of you can explore ways to efficiently administer the technique. for example that juji garami could've been implemented by getting close in after the first punch, this gives the attacker the feeling that he can quickly land a second punch with the other hand. and you don't want to hold down the first punch with resistive force, if an attacker feels that you're applying pressure on him his defensive response would kick in and naturally he would pull away from you and change his approach. aikido is about learning how to naturally flow with another person's energy and be naturally responsive towards their projection, Osensei wouldn't have created useless techniques as he came from a background of constant guns, swords and fistfights in his youth while studying aikijutsu.

    FYI I'm an instructor focus on self-defense, and just rant about an instructional video here in China, on the subject of BJJ's hip throw few hours ago. I also like BJJ and trained in this amazing martial art, but these days a lot of BJJ instructors and practitioners tend to ignore the difference between competition (which most people are there for) and self-defense. And that's why I don't go train formally any more.

    What would work for the last technique is, if he is hitting you with his one hand and then you go in, push the rear hand against his body and take your opponents "hitting" hand.
    It is possible, but you'll need a pretty good timing and the guts to go in.
    Nearly the same as the Pak Sau from Wing Chun, but without hitting someone.

    Thank you!! Like most guys in their 30s & 40s. I was very intrigued watching old Segall movies. Since I could remember, I had ALWAYS been very interested in martial arts. Irish/Spanish family. Oldest kid w 3 younger sisters. I was the protector. I remember my uncles watching every boxing match they could get on free tv. However, age 8 my parents divorced, & I grew up pretty poor. there was no formal training available. Id just learn from the boxing on tv, exercise, and actually wld set up an old mattress to punch lol
    . later on I stumbled on a channel that showed the old Kung Fu movies. So, started mixing in minor kicks with my boxing combos. Wasnt pretty, but it was what I had, & it truly DID make fending off bullies a lot easier. Of course a few yrs later Steven Segall came out. It was nothing like had seen before. I was hellbent on learning Aikido. Never did tho. Same reasons as above. FF into my very early 20's. I had started my 1st official "Art". Pentjak Silat, then a cpl years later. Met a friend who was a Muay Thai/MMA fighter. Started training at the gym with the team. 9 yrs later went into law enforcement. Learned some police systems (never quit Thai fighting), 2012 became a cert trainer. Still, after all of that. Maintained a level of passion for Aikido. My heart sank when I started seeing how many ppl would talk about its lack of street credit, so I kinda pushed it out of my mind. However, I am on a journey to explore other martial arts. Muay Thai will always be my core style, but I will say that if ppl taught a more street wise approach to Aikido, as you hv demonstrated in this video. It may be a great supplement to my Muay Thai, and boxing background. My apologies for such a lengthy comment. I wanted to share my story, & let you know this video made a great impact, & to say you are a true martial artist. Youve simplified this style to be more street effective. Great job!! Lastly, I've made a commitment to experiment. In Kali, Judo, and although not Aikido, but Aiki-Jutsu. Ive subscribed, and will look forward to more of your videos. Thanks again.
    PS: Anyone have any thoughts on Aiki-Jutsu?
