There is so much excellent but unheard American 20th century music I think I'm living somewhere outside the USA. It's a shame so called classical music stations are so stuck on Mozart and Beethoven that no one else matters, not even the listeners.

I can't comment from an American point of view, but yes, that's my impression. At any rate, it's my impression from what gets programmed here in the UK so much superb music gets overlooked, and only pops like Appalachian Spring and Rhapsody in Blue have a real foothold in the repertoire. What's available on CD would seem to suggest as much, too, as there are no complete cycles available of symphonies by composers like Persichetti and Piston, as opposed to the umpteen box sets of Sibelius, Mahler and all their other bankable European counterparts.

After playing his symphony for band in my high school wind ensemble, persichetti is definitely my favorite composer. Work to work, and he continues to amaze me.
side note: the intro sounds very similar to Mahler 9 IV

+MrWalkingbass this piece is certainly his best, quite enjoyable when listened to via speakers. most people do not know the charm of contemporary classical only because they never found the power of quality speakers.

+Kuang-Li Cheng You are right. I listened to it again after I uploaded it. Through a nice set of speakers the experience is unique. I edited the audio on iMovie and I enhanced the audio. It makes a real difference.

Great harmony book, of course. But, superb music as well. The quality of this work is on a par with symphonic music by perhaps better known names (Hovhannes, Rorem, Harris, Schumann, Bernstein, Hanson, Barber, Gould, Copland, ...)

I'd say the composers you named are more comparable to Persichetti (more alike). In terms of quality, overall skill, etc., its always a rather subjective sort of thing of course, but yes, all these composers are quite good, yes...

@@BenjaminGessel Thanks for your reply. So many awesome composers to discover ... its equally inspiring and overwhelming ! Recently discovered two fine violin concerti by Americans, one by Samuel Jones, and another by A.J. Kernis. Best !

I've been a fan of Persichetti ever since I was given a piano piece of his to learn as a teen, so thanks for posting this. btw, MrWalkingBass, can you tell me the name/artist of the image you've used - it's piqued my interest. thx.

Another fascinating piece of music you will never hear on BBC Radio3. Plenty of mediocre film music and quota-inspired choices though.

Whose art work is that? You should attribute the artist. Thanks!
