  • Today I try my hand at welding some headers for my Subaru EZ30R TwinTurbo Porsche Swap! TIG Welding is not my jam, but I'm working on it!

This is a Porsche 911 restoration that was abandoned in 1994 after being converted to a race car. My plan is a twin turbo Subaru EZ30 porsche engine swap with 400+ HP to the wheels. Stay tuned.

Nice work mate. There is no real problem using the MIG to tack the exahsut. The only issue using the MIG to weld exhaust is if you use mild steel MIG wire to tack, it will rust in those small spots. You can get spools of stainless wire for the MIG and then it is smooth sailing and the MIG is far easier to tack things together upside down under the car. TIG is all practice, and you are getting better every time. This all coming from me, who is a hack welder as well ;)

You may want to add an expansion bellows between to header and the turbo which will help with thermal expansion of the metal.

These are mild steel so I didn't think the back purge was a thing.

I am interested in seeing how you'll do the painted surround near those turbos. How will you keep them cool enough to not melt the paint and ruin the fit & finish? I don't recall hearing you talk about intercoolers nor are they in the front of the car to get air. They're in the slipstream where there's no fresh air. There's you and another YT channel doing very, very detailed Porsche rebuilds (but I use the word Porsche lightly in your case, LOL). Thanks for the great content!

Have you thought about relocating the Oilfilter to the OEM Porsche Location? With the Header in Place an oilchange could be a Mess

Practicing is surely the way to learn. That’s the way I learnt to mig, I’m sure I will have a go with the tig soon. Very practical tips, thanks for sharing

Michael- you might want to reach out to Tom P from “Ah Garage Time” he teaches tig welding and is a Porsche nut like you. Just a thought- thanks.

Your tig welding is far better than mine 😉Considering how expansive gas is now in the UK i am considering paying for a couple of hours tuition, hopefully that will enhance my welding quicker than just simply practicing.

nice job, i am learning about TIG from your efforts. I may go to a local community college and take a course on it for my future projects. Do you know if anyone has shoehorned in one of these into a 356?

Love this build... I just finished my EZ30R swap on my subaru BRZ. I was planning on next steps to turbo it but Im kind of worried the amount of boost it can take... you got 2 turbos on there... Im assuming cool factor more than power right..

Lord if you could just center the alternator, and get a 911 cooling fan to slip over the alternator, and build a faux cooling cover you’d really piss off the purists
It’d take a year of engineering, but it would be so damn cool
    See you at sema

If I didn't live on the other side of the country, I would be seriously noodling over throwing my SC in the ring for the final beta tester. It has a broken head stud(s) so it needs a $25k+ rebuild anyway.
And... are those Z-Rims up in the corner?
