This is really good basic instruction on how to start harmonizing. You might find it interesting to know that this almost exactly how I teach beginners to "street" or "woodshed" a song. In summary, its 3 simple instructions: 1)Learn the melody first, since you can't harmonize to an unknown melody. 2)Find a note that works and then DON'T move until you feel you absolutely HAVE to 3) when you do move, move the SHORTEST possible distance. Rinse and repeat :) This method can be used for multiple (at least 3) harmony parts both above and below the melody line, assuming the singer can at least find their own first unique starting note.

I’ve always sang “1st soprano” in choir so I’ve never learned to harmonize. I want to audition for my church’s worship team but knowing how to harmonize on the spot is a requirement. Thank you for this series. I pray this helps!

      Same.
I started really listening for the harmonies in songs I know.
I can hear them now on any song.
I started learning music theory to help.
Now when I try to sing harmony, it ebbs and flows like the waves on an ocean.
I am excited for the progress I made, and will continue to keep practicing.

I don't know how to describe it. Not sure if you remind me of someone or its just your ability to come through as such a good and interesting person I totally relate to. Greetings from Czech Republic. I hope that my English is understodable at least. I´m glad to find your videos. Simple, practical, usefull. They are helping me in many ways - rediscover the power of music (You rather dont play the guitar or sing=it´s terrible!!! My parents, my teachers, etc often use these words. I rather listened to them and stopped singing and playing so that nobody could laugh to me anymore. And I lost my joy for a long time. Now Im almost 50. Im learning to play the ukulele and the guitar, the piano. I learn to sing. I found out that I naturally sing in pitch (But not in the moments when I'm afraid that someone will tell me not to sing, it's a horror! But the more I practise the more I feel and hear that I am able to learn to sing with and for joy, without fear. My family members were very surprised and praised for my singing. And they asked who I was teaching from. :):):) Thank you= I appreciate your teaching. It gave me back the joy of music and healthy self-esteem. Never obey someone who tells you that you are embarrassed and that you do not know anything. It is not true. Your heart will tell you where your joy is. And where your pleasure is, is everything what you really need. This is my personal practical experience.

I really like how all your videos remind us to involve the whole body in music: listening, singing, and playing. Yes, of course it's all the same thing just using different senses, and you can do it wherever you happen to be-- on a skateboard or a keyboard! I am a bit isolated (1000km from any 'city' of 50,000+ ) so your personal examples and quality instruction are a lifesaver for learning jazz from the inside-out. Thanks so much.

Oh my goodness! I just found this and I’m so happy! I know NOTHING about music, except that I love to sing (and I can carry a tune). I’ve “sang” alto all my life, but never understood how to harmonize. Like your husband, I just have to memorize the alto if it’s taught to me, and then I’m fine. I’m going to put this phone next to my shower and practice! 🎶 I agree with others. You are an amazing teacher.

This was fantastic, and so enjoyable , even for us who are not really musically inclined, other than maybe sang in church choir in 6th grade. My passion is to sing harmony, even if taught it for only a few specific songs, as mentioned. But when y ou suggest these tips, it makes some sense, and is exhilarating, when it sounds right! Thank you so much for your very well thought out, articulate, video with some great demonstration examples. Yes, you totally make us feel happy, who want to, make up a harmony part! Thanks again, for your beautiful service, instruction, style, and your voice is absolutely breathlessly enjoyable, no matter what voice you sing, or what range, lol! Ty agin Aimee Nolte Music!

It's the warm smile. Isn't it great when a teacher does that? Makes learning so much more comfortable. That's how I was able to teach my nephew when no one else in the family could get him to pay attention, because they just scolded him and I smiled and was nice instead. - There's an old saying, you get more bees with honey than vinegar!

Thank you Aimee. I've been struggling with singing the harmony part with the folks I play with because I always want to go to the melody line. Even when I practice my part endlessly it's often a struggle to get it right. This has taught me that I don't necessarily have to sing a specific harmony line as long as the note or notes I'm singing mesh with the melody line. The master at this was David Crosby with Crosby Stills Nash & (sometimes) Young.
He also was the harmony magician with The Byrds.

Thank you with all my heart. I used to be able to sing complex harmony by ear but it’s like I’ve lost it completely. Singing on a praise team and a small bluesy group is very difficult and I seem to be really struggling. I’m fine and totally able to do the higher and lower harmony in a trio or just in the congregation, but up on the stage with the sound equipment in my ears, I’m dead to harmony.
So I will simplify and go with the one note

I imagine it with you especially helpful for people who don’t read music Or play instruments.

Nice trick. You're using C and D because I IV has C, and V and ii has D. I hate to sing and that's a great approach when you want to "help" with a little harmonization.
It made me think "why didn't I think about this before".
    Great.
