I meet Moebius one time, in Belgium
He tell me, on Incal, "one day, one page"
But one page mean storyboard, ink, color, everything!
    Its my favorite comic artist!
    Thanks for the video

If you’re interested in getting a deeper understanding of The Incal, ya gotta check out Jodorowsky’s thoughts about the Tarot. Both him and Moebius use the symbolism from Tarot cards all the time and if I remember correctly every card from the major arcana shows up in this story. John DiFool is card 0 of the Tarot, The Fool, for example. Really fun stuff!

Thank you. I was going to comment that point. Jodorowsky wrote a book about tarot of Marseille, describing each lame as a step by step process of a human's development, describing some kind of archetypal journey through life. Incal means inner call (the 'anima'), and the last pages tell the union between Difool's self and the whole universe (21st lame is called Le Monde, the ultimate achievement, the highest connection between you and the universe, when you + the world make one). Le Monde is followed by Le Fou, the only lame that has no number, so its place is before the first and after the last lames, because life is eternal cycle. That's why the last panel of the Incal is the same as the first. Like a Möbius' strip.

Read Incal from "Heavy Metal Presents Moebius" back in 1981, they were selling them at the local 7-11, blew me away! Also later when I found a comic book store, I jumped on PC comics "Dalgoda" because I thought it was the dog character from Incal. I was wrong, but not disappointed. Good times!

I bought my Incal hardcover here in Brazil last week. I just waited 10 years to buy, and man, the wait was totally worth. My favourite comic to this date, and the latest Brazilian edition (by Pipoca & Nanquim) is AMAZING. I'm a fanboy of both Moebius and Jodo, the reading was such a trip, full of hidden and not so hidden symbols for those who like to search this field (tarot, alchemy and all kinds of weirdness)!

The Incal is the Number one Dune's offspring, and completely deserves a cinematic or a series adaptation

It's called Fifth Element. Moebius and his French artist colleague whom worked on Valerian and Lauraline did the concept art for Fifth Element directed by Luc Bassant who directed Valerian and Bladerunner2044. A lot of the same story beats were so close to Incal Jodorowski tried sueing Luc Bassant but it didn't go through cause Moebius worked on both projects.

Here I am... in my late 50's and remembering how I'd bought the Incal 1,2, and 3 and suddenly I'm sad for the kid I used to be. Becuase back then, I had no friends to share this deep appreciation and even obsession over the comics, especially my faves. So thanks to you two for bringing back the teen I used to be and being as geeky/nerdish as I used to be... hell, as I still am!

Signing every (or every second) page is common in France and Belgium, because these comics were traditionally published in short weekly segments, generally 1-2 pages.

Moebius's hatching is so accurate, and in a very unique way. Big respect for my favorite drawer. And when you think this comic was edited so early, and all the influence he makes after this, throw the manga and also the movies. Incredible artist.

I finally read Incal, so now I am able to watch this video! And an awesome video it is. For me, all of that detail you were talking about in terms of background characters, costumes, architecture, etc., falls into the category of "world building", and I feel that Moebius is a master at that. I recently bought the entire Edena cycle, and man, sometimes I just spend time going back and looking at the world building in that, and in the Airtight Garage, too (and of course The Incal). The stories range from playfully fun to mind blowingly amazing, but no matter what is going on narratively, the world building art is worth the cover price alone, and worth looking at over and over again throughout the years. Thanks for this great video about it all, and thanks for pointing me in the Dune documentary direction! I will certainly be rewatching this video from time to time!!! What you guys do here is a treasure.

Thanks guys! This was so great!
I read this, serially, in it's original American run in _Heavy Metal_ in the 80s. The story ended at the acid lake whirlpool. 8 years ago I purchased the big _Incal_ omnibus, and then Gimenez' _Meta Barons._ Such great science fiction story telling and art.
And, yes, I have watched the _Dune_ documentary several times. I wish that storyboard book would be available somewhere, even as a PDF.
As you mentioned, it was Jodorowsky's son, Brontis, who was to play Paul in _Dune,_ and was the kid in _El Topo._
    Next, do Caza.
    Also, Liberatore!

As an european guy (from Galicia... look it up if you feel like it) I often find that what are considered essential classics around here may not be known or sell well in the US market. The reverse is rarely the case: American comic's classics are classics in here, whether we talk about mainstream or underground stuff.
So I have this question: is the Incal the essential work that is here (one of the most important works in the history of comics), or is it one of those things that only connoisseurs know? What about its spin-offs, the prequel and sequel? And what about other works by Moebius, like The Hermetic Garage or Edena?

15:24 you guys skipped over the genius of the “sex bank” idea. The touch screen with like 15 kinds of butts, 15 kinds of breasts, lips, eyes, etc. Difool makes his selections and the combination of his choices shows up at the door, personified. When I read this as a kid (and it may have been in French, which I could read growing up next door to Quebec) it blew my mind :-)

I'm not a fan of Jodorowsky's writing, but Moebius' artwork really carries everything along.

you're so right about making every panel interesting, eliminating/reducing talking head shots. we should hold ourselves to a standard of immersion and visual storytelling, not just for the sake of our readers but for our own sakes. because honestly drawing those dialogue/head panels aren't even fun, you can feel how un-stimulating they are and just want to move on

Jodorowsky also did some collaborations with other artists, e.g. “Diosamante” with Jean-Claude Gal -- now there was an artist who spent way too much time detailing his drawings. Unfortunately he died before finishing that work ...
