- A few years ago I ditched my flat-screen TV in favour of a projector for watching media in my home. Today I'm going to get into the benefits I've found from making this change, as well as mention the devices I've used and enjoyed since then. Let me know what you think in the comments!

I have a 20 year old TV and rarely use it, a projector might be a good option if it fails and I want to replace it. I used to have a projector mod for my Motorola phone. It rocked! Highly recommend. I like that it's made you mindful of your media consumption. Great point 🌻🍄

@@spencers-adventures Moto Z phones have magnetic terminals that attach to various "mods," yes, official accessories. The projector was called "Motorola Insta Share." I had the speaker mod as well. The system spoke to my geeky heart.
My home videos setup is a small flatscreen, an xbox360 for dvd and gaming, and a vhs-tape player.
I love my Xgimi Horizon 4K, I highely recommend it because of the sound and image quality, but wait till it’s on sale.
I own a 32" 1080P LCD, so it's not massive, but it's big enough to not feel cramped like a computer or phone. Paired with a PS3 for local media + blu ray playback, it's been quite nice and not too dominating of the space. My problem is that I am hopelessly addicted to my computer and UA-cam. Probably doesn't help it's a 27" monitor. I know I need to fill my time with other hobbies and tasks, but it's difficult to know how/where to start.
In my opinion you need epson or optoma or any known brand. I have a akiyo projector and it’s ok for the price but its not very good. I still think a tv is the best option at those prices.
That’s fair, an Epson certainly is a great make and will last a long time. With this item I think the built in speakers really set it apart, and the general fact that projectors can be stored out of sight while not in use, while a large TV dominates a room and becomes sort of a focal point. I second this, I’d also add Panasonic though they are tailored towards professional use

We’ve a very cheap projector (looks similar to the first one you showed) that we sometimes set up for gaming on our kitchen wall. It does the job but wouldn’t be great for tv/films. And the sound is 😬.
I have the Nebula Cosmos Laser projector and I freaking love that thing! It replaced my tv almost 2 years ago and I haven’t looked back since.
I haven't switched over to projectors just yet.
The idea if having a gaint screen experience in a small portable box is appealing.
Especially moving. I ended up selling my 77 inch Sony OLED 2 years ago because I was moving 250+ miles.

I like the freedom of movement it affords too. I’ve moved a few times in the last five years and each time my setup has got lighter to accommodate that. It’s a good way to go!
I remember those giant projector TVs. I had one friend whose dad had one and they used one of those old drop down screens that people used for home movies with it.
I thought those things were cool.
Now I don't watch TV. If I want to watch. DVD or something, I have my laptop. I'm simple.

Spencer: How does the Aurzen projector look when projecting standard DVD's? I am meaning at some point to gradually re-buy titles in the Blu Ray format. I think that Blu Rays are acceptable enough in regards to resolution. I just can't see 4K. In regard's to the James Bond films. Sometimes you can see wear in the elements of these on Blu Ray already and I find that the older Sean Connery titles can look better (wear wise) in DVD format in some cases. I collect 16mm prints as well. I think I will buy this projector soon. But just was wondering how DVD's look projected. I think that some of these Blu ray players can indeed upconvert DVD's as far as lines of resolution. Have no idea what DVD's would be like number wise compared to the resolution of 1080p. Thank you for any and all information. I would guess DVD's are 720p or less. Thank You!

I think there is one scenario where a small projector could come in handy. Some people watch movies alone, and to get good audio, one just needs a decent pair of headphones, and a way to connect to a streamer. As of now, I still use a 32 inch flat screen television. It has really tinny audio. When I'm watching TV alone, I'll sometimes use my HD 280 Pro headphones (studio grade vocal mixing headphones) paired up to my TV via my phone and Roku. Since those old studio headphones are wired, I have a minimal wireless amplifier that pairs to my phone, which then pairs to the Roku. I can tuck those away in my pocket. The latency and audio resolution is actually quite good (For the audio nerds out there, it isn't lossless, but it is far better than an integrated TV speaker). I don't need to invest in a big speaker setup, especially since the room isn't all to large. The only issue, is that when I want to play some old games on the Nintendo Wii or 360, I'll have to go back to the tinny speakers. Amazing video, underrated channel!
I have owned two projectors in my life now and even when I purchased my first one in 2004 I found out that to get something of real quality it was going to be fairly pricey with the first one being a NEC for around $1000 but was more intended for classrooms or board rooms, I seen plenty of the same model in college and boardrooms. I loved it. I just connected it to my laptop, and I used it for years from playing Xbox with the neighbors on the side of their house, connecting it to other video equipment for video displays for my brother who was a disk jockey, and using it for a host of different reasons other than being just the way I could provide a big screen experience anywhere I wanted. Unfortunately he got lost several years ago during one of my moves to a different place. To replace this I bought an Epson true 4K for roughly around the same price as my original, and I have a 120-inch screen set up in my living room as my primary way of watching everything. This has Bluetooth connection to go straight to the soundbar that I have placed directly behind the screen. I don't care that it doesn't have anything smart in it since I already had a 4K Roku that I keep it connected to. I also connect my PS4 to it when I want to watch any of my physical copies of films or shows I owned already and gaming on it works great also. The other thing I knew to look into from my previous one was the cost of a replacement lamp as they all have a certain shelf life that also depends on how hard it's being used. I prefer the price of this replacement lamp over even my previous one. The picture and contrast make the experience of watching films in their intended full glory makes watching anything on it a real treat. That might be a decent one, but once you're willing to spend a bit more for better quality, you might find it hard to go back to inferior products. Also, just because it says 4K doesn't mean it actually is, and I doubt it has capabilities like projecting 3D movies, which I own several of them on Blu-ray. It looks alright, but I wouldn't trade my current one for something like that. I have spent most of my life being into everything in electronics and even have a degree in this field, I'm always looking into what goes into these kinds of products and what are the pros and cons of everything I buy.
This is a great comment, I think it’s important like you said to put a lot of thought into purchases like this and “buy once, cry once” as they say. Because I don’t leave the projector hooked up in a specific place I appreciate that this one doesn’t require anything else but power, but it sounds like your setup is very well thought out. Aurzen price range is something I can save up for. I agree on being intentional of what to watch especially with a projector. Looking forward for my future projector and watch Charlie Chaplin’s movie or Little Rascal or The Three Stooges. 😊

I use a completely different way of media consumption.
I watch documentaries, movies while I cook or do household chores, so no sitting down. And don't have space for a laptop (it has the big keyboard base=need a kitchen table or so), so I use a tablet (now iPad pro 12") on a stand.
When I watch visual media sitting then I'm studying it or let a nature documentary run in the background (without sound) while I program.
So I'm not the target for projectors at all.^^

Update on the library audio book video. My library has its own service so signed up to that but they got rid of dvd rentals and such a long time ago they said
Yeah I was grateful that they thought of me, it’s been a great machine and really levelled up movie night around here! And great to hear you got the libraries digital services sorted out - but sad to hear they don’t have DVDs any longer. Hopefully you can find some benefit in the digital offerings though!

Loved the video as always Spence quick question tho can I watch dvds, vcr tapes and maybe the app Tubi via a projector? And what video game systems would connect with a projector?
Glad you liked it buddy! Anything that can connect via HDMI will work. If you’re using something that uses the older AV (red/white) cables then you will need an adapter that converts to HDMI. I did some digging and couldn’t find TUBI in the supported apps, but if you connected your laptop or another smart stick like the Firestick via HDMI you’d have access to anything those devices can get, including other apps. I’ve been using Plex’s free movies and shows on there - a lot of similar offerings to what Tubi has so check it out as well if you haven’t. Hope that helps!
@@spencers-adventures that helps more then enough I think plex is perfect just prefer Tubi but if I can connect my ps5, ps3, dvd/VCR combo, surround system, Nintendo switch, Super Nintendo, sega genesis and few other systems to projector that can handle all of this which I’m hoping I’ll be happy!!!! Any suggestions for all of this as far as projectors?
If you don’t have speakers for this setup then I think the AURZEN is the best option to do this. It does have only 2 HDMI in on it so you’d have to disconnect and reconnect to plug this number of devices into it, but it would work for that. Rather than using a standard projector screen I use a retractable blackout blind that has a white back on it and it makes the perfect screen that stores easily when not in use.
Is Aurzen Boom 3 water and dust resistant at all?
Would love to be able to store it in my patio box and take it out to use for outdoor viewing
I just looked into it and I see it’s listed as dust-proof but I don’t see anything about waterproof. Hope that helps!

Yeah If I could start over I'd probably just get the metaquest 3 (which I have) and an Eames chair and not have anything else in the room (Except maybe some nice art on the walls). Goodbye couch. Goodbye TV. Goodbye stereo. Goodbye Xbox. It could free up space from my guitar and my guitar gear.
Right now with social gatherings, a lot of folks don't wanna watch the TV. So I'm usually just watching it by myself anyway. TV is now Individualized to people's taste and so a lot of people don't wanna watch the same thing at the same time. That's why it might be better just to have it in a private setting with VR goggles. The projectors are interesting but I I don't think I have the room to use it.
If I did have a projector I would wanna make use of this large audiophile grade stereo that I have. And it would just be a lot of wires and probably just take up more space than than I have available. Plus I'd have to get rid of the TV and it's a perfectly good TV. That's one weird thing about TVs today as opposed to how they were in the 1990's when you'd have to get another TV every 5 years nowadays they just keep going forever.
I think based on what you said, you’d enjoy the book Goodbye Things by Fumio Sasaki. It’s a great book on minimalism and he shows a few different peoples setups in it - there’s a guy who has a setup just like you mentioned with a VR headset and not much else. He spent money on quality stuff but very few total items - I love that book.
What guitar gear do you have? I’ve been playing since I was 5 years old so I love to hear what other people are using
@@spencers-adventures Wow. I wish I'd played guitar that long! I didn't start till I was like 14 and maybe not even serious about it till 16. I'll be sure to check out that book. Sounds pretty interesting.. I wish had tried the VR sooner. I originally planned to get the metaquest 2, but about a week or so before purchase it went up $100 extra, so I gave up on the idea until this year.
Guitars:
I've got my old 1989 Ibanez 540G that I got in '89. I didn't get another new guitar until about 2006. It was the Variax but it's tech parts are broken now. About 2017, I got the Schecter Sun Valley Super Shredder that has a Sustainiac pickup and another active pickup so it uses batteries which is kind of a pain. It needs some repairs right now. It's kind of a drag because it's a fairly new guitar. I had put some really lightweight strings on it and I found it doesn't support it and then it caused the springs to come out in the back with its Floyd Rose system. I had it repaired once before but I checked it recently, and looks like it's already happening again.
Next, I got the Jamstick midi guitar which is a lot of fun to play. And the last guitar I've got is an Ibanez Ichita Nito signature guitar. I pre-ordered the Nito when it was announced and I had to wait a year before it finally arrived due to those shipping problems that happened in 2021-2022. I spend 99% of my guitar playing time on the Nito. It's really comfortable and only weighs about 5 lbs. And it uses 10 gauge strings which I thought I'd hate, but it feels good.
I have various guitar pedals too but the most recent big purchase was last year with the Kemper Profiler right when they dropped the price. It's a lot of fun messing with the gear.
I think for the next guitar I might get that Tim Miller signature from Kiesel, think it's releasing this month. Probably need to get rid of the Schecter and Variax to make room though.
