Why I HATE My Smartphone (and Why I Love It)

  • Though I spend a lot of time using single use devices like a dumbphone and an iPod, I haven't been able to adopt these technologies as full-time solutions. The smartphone is something I require for work so it is still very much in my life. Today I want to breakdown a few of the things I like about smartphone tech, and then talk about the things that make me want to quit using them forever. Let me know what you think in the comments!

    I am currently watching this video on my Mac mini. I recently have gotten rid of all social apps on my phone, as well as reddit and others. My phone is now a tool. I still have slack and email for emergencies at work, but instead of taking them on my phone, I now go to my computer. Forcing myself to watch UA-cam on a computer, or do social media on a computer, means I don't do it, because I don't REALLY WANT to do it. It is just convenient. Remove convenience? And I don't care. Super interesting. Idk that I will ever dump my smartphone, but man... I don't miss social media. Like at all. And I had an art account I loved posting to. Trying to find different ways to interact with people, where it isn't gamified. We shall see how this experiment goes.

      This is great - thanks for sharing your experience! It’s important for each of us to find our balance with tech, getting the most out of it but not letting it get the most of you. Keep us updated on your experiment!

    Moreover ,with the time we spend with our phone, we fully miss the real life.
    People on tiktok are so judgy… woman’s need to be perfect those days.
    Like hair, nails, lips everything has to be fake.
    And same with guys nowadays.
    It’s truly a shame how fast everything changes. And how easy we jump on those “trends”
    So not only the electronics changes quickly also everything else. That’s why I appreciate each video, Spencer.
    So thanks again, for the input :)

      Agreed, Tiktok is a platform I really don’t want to be a part of. The fast paced nature of trends on there is a big turnoff for me. Thanks for the comment!

    As far as I can, I am totally against smartphones, especially social networking applications, I only use them for a short time a day. I don't need the camera (I prefer to take my camera with me), I'm not interested in sharing what I'm eating or where I am and to listen to music I prefer my portable player. What makes me sadder is to see families or couples eating in restaurants, sitting at the table and each one glued to the screen of their devices, it is a totally depressing vision of that addiction.

    If I lived on a compound with other people, or like… had family and friends I saw every single day in my immediate neighborhood, my phone usage would go to zero. It’s this weird lack of an I love Lucy & the Mertz’s relationship that we’re missing and we’re definitely falling pray to that.

    I need a smartphone for a few apps like banking so discipline is the best way. I deleted most apps, turned off nearly every notification, turned off 5G, and I definitely don’t install games. Battery life comfortably lasts 1.5-2 days now. If I want to do any work task, the bigger screen is much better.

      @pallettownbry 2 місяці тому

      Just curious, what do you do that requires you to need access to banking at all times? I'm just curious because you see this comment all the time in r/dumbphones as a reason people don't make the switch.

      @@pallettownbry I spend a lot of time outside my home country and do a lot of transfers and remittances. Many OTP codes come through apps instead of SMS now. If I was in my home country, I could manage easily with just ATM machines, debit card, cash and dumbphone.

    Thank you for the video. Keep up the great work. I feel the tug from both sides as well. It does become very practical to carry everything in one phone, GPS, music, messaging, calls, and then in my particular case, medical information and the ability to look up medications or contact doctors quickly if I need to (I’m in EMS). On the other side I feel the complete control it is dominating in people’s brains. In their focus, in their perspectives as to what is normal, what isn’t, what is good, what is bad. I don’t really know where I will end up. The pull is strong both ways, I say this knowing full well how ironic this is as I type it on an Apple Magic Keyboard and IPad Pro.

      Appreciate the kind words! Like you said it’s hard to not feel hypocritical or at least note the irony of critiquing tech on tech platforms and while using tech, but that’s the fun of finding a balanced relationship with it. Thanks for the comment and sharing your experience!

    Not gonna lie, I still plan my route and write down directions before going out despite having the maps app on my phone. The reason I continue to do that is because I personally need to develop my inner compass. Heaven forbid, if a malfunction happens while navigating, I at least have the old way of navigating. Keeping a paper map on deck, or my Garmin Nuvi navigator in my emergency glove box. Just that piece of mind or first aid sense. Even I carry a back up phone incase something happens to my main device.

      Ive used an ebike for transportation for about a year and I go cycling recreationaly quite often. Cycling gives you a better map of your city than driving, you feel more in touch with the world around you, you can pay more attention to street names and landmarks

    • @ErikCoon14
      @ErikCoon14 2 місяці тому

      I was thinking about how I need to do this. I knew the town I grew up in like the back of my hand. Unfortunately, I have lived in my city for nearly 10 years and I still don't know it like I should. Been thinking about getting a map of my city and then of the greater metro, and highlighting routes I take regularly and looking for shortcuts and remembering street names... GPS has made me absolutely awful at directions.

      The other thing I have to keep in mind is that my smartphone is a phone first, everything else secondary. Like a Swiss Army knife -- it's a knife first and all the other add ons are emergency only.

      @@lilPopper This is the approach I've been taking with reassessing my phone. It is a tool for communication. I remember when calling and texting was enough! I am slowly bringing myself back to that approach. But a dumb phone isn't going to do that for me. It is a mindset shift in me. It is a discipline and a concerted effort to swim against the current.

    I hate my phone but couldn't live with a dumbphone as I need some of the "smarts" at work as I need to be able to send pictures and make video calls. When I get home I wish my phone would disappear or turn into an iPod as usually at home is when I most despise how much I just doomscroll. At home the phone should be just a music player to me but it rarely is as it is so easy to get stuck staring at it.

    With my current situation, i live in an area where i dont have hardline internet. So the only way i can use it is with a smartphone. I wish i didn't need it, but most things nowadays require an internet connection. Yesterday, while waiting for my families Easter brunch to be ready, i noticed everyone had their eyes glued to their phone. Meanwhile, i was the weird one listening to my Walkman playing with a Rubiks cube to pass the time.

    I, too, have a love/hate relationship with my phone. I like that I can use it anywhere I might need to. For example, I can check if I missed the bus (like, if it were earlier than it's scheduled to be), which is very helpful. But I'm usually pretty good about not using my phone outside much. The problem is when I'm home, and watching YT, checking my e-mail a million times (despite not getting much e-mail, it's just a habit) etc etc. All on my phone. I could change to using my computer (and maybe I should) but then I'm still on a screen. I dunno. It's a tough thing to navigate when all these companies want your attention.

I'm thinking on trying to combine a punkt with an ipad mini to have the convenience of the smartphone but that i can let behind me at home (i'm not using a camera at all even when carrying a smartphone around) and still be able to get gps in my car if needed with tethering.
