I’ve always been a fan of physical and the recent news surrounding companies phasing out physical media, whether it be retailers dropping DVDs and Blu-Rays or Ubisoft outright stating that gamers should get used to not owning games, has convinced me to buy physical as much as I can.
Another thing I wanted to mention is if you mod your game consoles, a lot of them have applications that allow you to back up your physical games via digital storage. With this route, you end up getting the best of both worlds, being able to completely own a game without any DRM and play them off internal storage without risking wear and tear on the disc/cartridge.

I’ve always been a physical collector. I love the feeling of truly owning a game, admiring the box art, reading manuals, the like. I own a couple games digitally so I’d say my favorite aspect of them is just the convenience of them. Sometimes I’d rather just play it asap and I can always pick it up physically later too when the price falls in a year or two.

For me, I try to buy games physically when I can, partly because of the “physical ownership” argument, and partly because it takes up a lot less memory. But if I can’t, I don’t mind buying games digitally since it can be convenient, and digital sales can help save a lot of money.

I was gonna say that with physical disks (for modern games) you still at least own your games, but physical disks these days are little more than glorified installation keys. Heck sometimes the game isn't even on the disk. The moment you insert the disk, which may only contain the bootup program, the internet recognizes that you are entitled to get this game, and then the download starts.
I would say, for most of my PS5 games, that the reason for having the disk is that disk installation is quicker than downloading, but then you often have updates to download as well, and for some reason when you delete a PS5 game all updates and patches go with it, having to be nauisiously downloaded again the next time you install it, instead of giving you the option to keep the updates installed to make installation easier next time.

I prefer physical games for the fact I own it, and also, I like how they look on a shelf. Also, older consoles don’t have digital stores or the digital store is out so I don’t have an option.
Digital is convenient but they take up lots if storage, and if the developer felt like it, they probably could stop me from using it.
Gaming subscriptions suck, you have to keep paying a price for games, and games come and go, some that are exclusive so you have to pay a monthly fee now if you want to play it.

You never mention DRM free digital games like GOG one biggest pro is you buy the game you own it 100% even if you have no internet connection you still play the game without internet plus you can share the game or store it in different hard drive and still works one the biggest CONS is that publishers will see it losing sales but reality companies do not like drm free due they do not have the full control of the game even if they delisted people will share it to their friends and play it.

It's also nice that GOG doesn't care that you rip the files and use them on Android... in fact, get a Retroid Pocket Flip or 4/4+ and you'll have almost everything you need for DOS games now (get Magic DosBox and abuse that mapper)

Another advantage of digital over physical that might not be immediately obvious for people from the US or other first world countries is: price, most digital storefronts have regional pricing, which is a godsend when buying games, they also have much more frequent sales, where I live the concept of bargain bin for games is basically inexistent, and for some consoles we don't have official distribution of the physical games here, which means all of them have to be imported and they're much more expensive than even the full price on digital stores

During the PS3/Wii/360 era, I had SHELVES of games that were just taking up space and not being playing. In 2014, I switched to digital and never looked back.
    With digital:
-I can buy a game once and play on multiple devices at the same time
-My library can't be stolen... unless the game company takes it away from me. 😂
-I don't have to worry about physical storage space
-My discs and carts will never malfunction
At the same time, I know that if I ever lose my password or I die, my thousands of dollars will be wasted and hundreds and hundreds of games will instantly be inaccessible.

If you have a (modern) console: digital here too (but only because modern physical is mostly just digital with extra steps)
If you have a console (before around the second half of the 8th generation): physical because you OWN that thing right there and you can rip the files for emulation if you're into that (the stores'll shut down eventually)

For me, if the game is the same price physically and digitally then I'll get it physically. I also get my favorite games physically to hold onto in case it gets delisted. But for most other games I don't mind buying digitally for less than $20 on sale. If it's a new game you might as well get it physically. And it's easier for friends and family to look gor physical games than search digital libraries for games to buy. I have tried Game Pass Ultimate and it's nice but I have so many games without it that I really don't need to spend the extra cash just for the option to play games I may or may not play. I'll stick with Core for now and buy digitally.

I always buy physical games when it comes to my Nintendo switch, because I have a little sister with a switch as well, and if I buy physical games then she can play them without having to buy them too! I can also let friends borrow copies of my games too!

I would have more physical games if I really cared about the "omg you don't actually own your games" stuff
if it's not available anymore for whatever reason, i can just pirate it

I thought physical because the reality is that it’s any of the services that my digital games are provided through quick down for any reason I would lose access to my digital cameras the other reality is that when you have a digital game through service like steam or worst case scenario, something like Ubisoft connect you don’t technically on the game the company has every right to remove the game from your possession at any time

My biggest concern regarding the digital games on consoles is that companies can shutdown the platform in the future so you won’t be able to download your digital games again. Nintendo and Sony had done that already with their old consoles like Wii and psp.
On PC is ok to go always digital because I know Steam is not going anywhere..

Physical, because you can sell them back to get money. You won't find someone that makes money from owning their digital game. I just sold a few games for a couple hundred dollars, can you do that with your Steam Library?

I know that both types have their pros and cons, but I'll always prefer physical to digital. If I'm paying full price might as well get a physical disc + box + whatever may be inside (if anyone even adds stuff like the GTA maps anymore). Also you can dump it so you don't lose it after it degrades, but by that time you'd be better off just getting is a ROM, it'd be abandonware.
Also, feels nice when you're not restricted to some online store or service

Physical copies are useless now, you don't have the full game on the disc and it's usually released unfinished and needs constant patches. As much as I liked trading in, I just buy digital now because it is more convenient and I'll never lose or break them

If given the ability to, I will ALWAYS buy a physical copy. Even if that physical is pre-owned or a Limited Run/Super Rare.
Edit: oh yeah, they deslisted Spec Ops: The Line. The only way to play THAT now if you dont already own it is to get a physical for 360 or PS3. I paid $60 for that privilege yesterday, and the highest price I saw was $130.

All of 5 PS5 games that I have physically, are big PlayStation Studios tittles. But, if the game is less than 25 Gb to download (7 Gb for PS4 and PS3 games), I'm not bothering to buy it physically.

  • @Krxnic

I sold my entire physical collection of games because I was tired of switching out discs and the clutter was too much. It took about 2 years to repurchase every game I got them on sale. I have 200+ digital games on my PS5 and 50+ digital games on my Switch which I take with me everywhere.
I don’t care for physical media and it’s super convenient having everything stored in my device

I usually try to buy which ever option is cheaper, but if I'm feeling lazy I'll just buy it online lmao. Sometimes buying the physical copy is nice because the case has a really cool cover art. An example I can think of is Twilight Princess for the wii. I always thought the cover art for that game was sick.

The whole "download games" is moot since even most physicals are 1.0 releases which are vastly inferior to the latest version, meaning you are going to download either way. Also most games simply can't load fast enough to use the optical media, so you have to install either way.
I understood most anti-digital sentiments awhile ago but the digital way of buying/owning games is so advanced now its becoming the norm, without digital distribution 90% of the indie scene would simply not exist.

  • @pacomatic9833
    @pacomatic9833 5 місяців тому +2

To me, the biggest advantage of physical is not using much space; instead of storing everything, your hard drive just stores the updates.
However, systems today just copy the entire game to your hard drive. Now the disc is nothing but anti-piracy.
As such, I only get physical if it's cheaper.

  • @vedrisnightmare
    @vedrisnightmare 5 місяців тому +4

    Piracy:
You own the game, no "license to play" and its DRM free.
You OWN the game, you can play it whenever you want without issue.
You OWN THE GAME, if you search hard enough for the buried treasure, you can find the original copy before every ungodly "remaster"/remake that gets pumped out like its the 2000s horror craze again.
At this point, piracy IS owning games.

You might as well just buy your games digital not unless you're a collector you have to install your games you know what that's doing that's pulling from the digital store there's no difference between physical and digital at all the only difference is you're taking up installment room less if you own a physical but other than that it does not matter anymore
