    -----------
StyleLikeU is led by mother-daughter duo Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum, who are bound by the desire to uncover what’s underneath personal style. Through candid, docu-style interviews with empowered individuals, StyleLikeU is building a world where getting dressed each morning is an act of self-love.
    ------------
“I had to lose myself completely to find myself again”, explains women’s work activist Melinda Alexander, adorned in a floral blazer and a pink chiffon robe, as she bravely details the abusive relationship that catapulted her to become her most full and liberated self.
In her mid-twenties, Melinda met and fell in love with a buzzy rapper, married and had a child with him. The relationship, however, compounded what had began at a young age for Melinda: a fixation on outside validation and fitting in based on her appearance. But Melinda’s ex-husband was also jealous and abusive, telling her what to wear, manipulating her through subtle threats and often getting violent with her.
Always resilient, a terrifying incident turned into an inflection point for Melinda in her life, a moment where she decided she was not going to continue to let others dim her light. She not only had her ex-husband jailed for domestic abuse, but also stopped wearing makeup, shaving her leg hair, and started going to the grocery store with her “saggy” side-boob on proud display, things she’d never would have dreamed of doing her previous, outer-directed incarnation.“You just realize,” Melinda said of her radically altered life approach, “that all rules are bullshit. There are no rules. It’s all your own conversation with yourself and I just needed to really see who I was when I didn’t have someone else there telling me who I was supposed to be.”

The way she fights off her tears - head tilted back, the sound makes when she clicks her tongue, like she's gathering her thoughts - struck me immediately as the way strong women, those who fight so hard not to be vulnerable, cry. I have seen one of my best friends, a woman who is also a strong single mother like her, fight tears exactly like this and it really hits home. We all hurt and suffer in this world sometimes. Let's continue to love each other even harder.

The idea that you can be the healthiest you've ever been while still being the heaviest you've ever been is revolutionary when it shouldn't be. The more people like Melinda share that, the more understood it will hopefully become.
Once again, this project has pulled out such strong emotions. Still my absolute favorite series on UA-cam.

I got out of an emotionally abusive relationship a little over a month ago and the way she described her abuser is eerily similar to my ex... really makes me tear up when I think of how my life could've turned out if I'd stayed. I loved this video! What an inspiring, powerful woman xoxo

This made me realise that my mum was in an abusive relationship, not physical, but when she mentioned the broken windows, that's what a lot of stuff was like when I was growing up. A lot of broken things, doors, walls. My dad was very angry back then and still can be but has mental health problems, although that doesn't give anyone an excuse to treat others as lesser than you. My parents are divorced now and a lot happier for that.

This was so beautiful. Its pretending that we all have perfect lives and have never been hurt and 'don't care' that separates us, its this honesty shown by Melinda and so many other women on social media platforms that brings us closer and reminds us we all have separate journeys and different pains and we can share them and use them for good. we can be the person we wish we had in our most vulnerable and painful experiences for others.

I don't know if you'll see this Melinda but I just wanted to say you gave me hope by making this video. I am in a similar position to you right now. Single mother after coming out of a physically, emotionally and financially abusive relationship. My little baby boy has been the only reason to keep going after the abuse I suffered over the past few years. Whatever it takes, I'll make sure he knows he is loved and that he knows how to love other people and treat them well. I put on quite a bit of weight during pregnancy and after, yet for the first time in my life i feel good in myself. I feel like a strong woman and not a scared little girl anymore. I got myself out of the "relationship", sought help and confided in the people I could trust. I wish you and your son all the best and thank you for making me feel less alone.
