They clean the runways to prevent debris of any kind from getting sucked into the engine. The engine is designed for it but you still heavily damage it if it happens. It's the same for every jet really.

A very expensive mistake by the USAF: Using an F-35 Lightning in some random loon’s airfield full of wandering leaves. (why?) Very accurate too as even the slightest drip of water, especially from the rain, can compromise most of its technology. So surely it can’t handle a wandering leaf.

The US's failure to establish healthcare for all is more of an issue of voters putting shitheads in office that don't care about that and less that all of that money is going into making jets and cannot also be put into public services. Also 400 M (the cost of 5 F-35s) isn't going to get you healthcare regardless.

You also can't really blame the voters when your options are trump or Biden, neither of these two will implement any meaningful reform to medicare or housing. I was out for a run last year near Hill AFB and heard a huge boom, then saw a pillar of black smoke rising through the trees from on base, later I found out the pilot had hit a bird and he had to eject leaving the F-35 to crash right into the ground...
