  • In this archival episode of All Day Vinyl's LEGENDS Podcast from mid 2020, host Scott Dudelson speaks with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member and Traffic Co-Founder Dave Mason.
In this clip Dave talks a little about his experience and brief tenure in Derek and the Dominos with Eric Clapton, Jim Gordon and Carl Radle, and the coming together of his first solo album "Alone Together." Mason also mentions an intriguing band he started with Ginger Baker right after Cream broke up and whether some of the songs from Alone Together may have appeared on a Traffic album had he not left the band.

Good memories of buying the album Alone Together when I was just a kid and playing it over and over. 60 now and still love it. ☮️

Wow! It's great to see and hear your conversation with Dave Mason! He and his music were part of some extremely important and influential episodes of the best music that I was first aware of from the late 1960's and early 1970s.

Thanks for this. I always liked Dave Mason’s music. He seemed to be associated with lots of different great groups, but never became a household name. And there wasn’t a lot of information about him. I hope he enjoyed his career.

Sometime in the last decade or so, I was able to read Bobby Whitlock's auto-bio on the internet. It was originally in print, but was long sold out and from what I could tell, if you could even find a copy they were going for three figures... Anyway, the book was on line and it is a fascinating look into D&TD. Bobby was, at that time, performing about in Texas and maybe elsewhere with his wife. Not sure if they're still at it, or if his book is still up somewhere...
In his book, Bobby briefly mentioned Dave Mason and how he was considered for D&TD. Now I DID read it a while back, but this episode did kinda stick with me... So D&TD were not a particularly hierarchical band. Obviously, Eric was the leader, but as Dave pointed out in the interview here, Eric was already into heroin, which is not a drug that brings out extroversion - more its opposite. Anyway, so with a generally laissez-faire attitude prevalent, Dave Mason somehow got into the mix of potential band members. (I think at that point the core four were already together). Bobby mentioned that one gig where Dave played with them. However, shortly thereafter, Dave was left adrift. Apparently, along with Dave came a small coterie of highly questionable, even creepy characters, and they were all quite involved, one way or another, with that other powder, so Dave got the hint and moved on, with no regrets from Bobby and the other three. Dave did some great work in his day no doubt, but the way this little story is presented in Bobby's book really is quite amusing - if you can find it.

I had the pleasure of seeing Dave on his split coconut tour with Little Feat. (Cool little factoid: Lowell George said that he was kicked out of the Mothers of Invention for having written Willin'. At first I thought: WTF?!! But TBH...Zappa was very anti-drug and WIlin' is a drug song, so then it made sense.)

@@alldayvinyl The video of Dave and Jim Krueger doing the acoustic rendition is epic. I briefly knew Jim many years ago - he would sometimes come to a little beer bar in Van Nuys for the bratwurst sandwiches, where I hung out in my early 20's. Jim was a nice guy, a most talented man.

Alone Together, Dave's first record, on Blue Thumb is it, with the pastel colored record, is just a beast, fantastic everything about it. Don't you mean All Things Must Pass, from George Harrison, produced by Phil Spector and featuring Dave. I've never seen a Derek nd the Dominoes recording with Dave. Maybe he jammed with them or something.

I agree alone together is amazing album. And there are actually two recordings with Dave and Derek and dominos - both produced by Phil Spector. They can be found and I think one was one a Clapton compilation and the other on a box set. Dave was also in those all things must pass sessions.. t

Most interviews with Famous-Important Musicians (specially those who write almost all of the songs in their recordings) only focus on the trivialities of their times & bands...
they don't even mention the really important matters :
1- the Musical aspects-details of the instrumentations in their songs-albums
2- the lyrics-THEMES covered in their compositions, which shape the direction of their interpretations
    3- Vocals & Parts Arrangements...
The words in a song are a product of the POET ASPECT in the Musician.
DM seems to mostly write-record about the fate of a BROKEN LOVE THAT IS STILL LOVED, STILL MISSED.
    Dave Mason is a SUPERB
    Poet-Composer-Guitarist-Singer.

super great - recognized & acclaimed.

super great - BUT NOT recognized & acclaimed...
It was/is a perfect blend between Traffic and Mamas & Papas.
