Out of all of the hundreds of hours of videos I’ve watched I gotta say I really appreciate your attention to detail in selecting a piece of old bonsai nursery material. New to your channel and have enjoyed all the videos I’ve watched so far. Keep up the good work
Just found your channel. Working with nursery stock has always scared me, so i really appreciate your thorough explanation and the pace of your videos. Very helpful. Thanks
Only came across the channel couple of days ago. As a beginner I like the detail, the different perspectives and, as a non native speaker, the speed. Keep going. One can tell that you love what you're doing by the way you do your videos.
That is awesome tree 🌳 massive trunk I’m about to start my 2nd juniper Nana Bonsai I started with a small 3L pot grown and now I bought a much bigger 10L pot grown so you’re video is very helpful thank you 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻💚🌳
I’m looking at this tree, seeing the top third and thinking “cut it off there it would make a great looking bonsai”. Love your vision for what a big impressive tree it could be well into the future.
Dairy farmers wants their create back Josh..😉 I'm only 12min drive away if you ever need more hands👐. Good to see the Juniper master back on youtube and i know thats going to be a really nice tree. Great job Josh. Catch up soon mate.
Dairy Farmers should be paying me for the free advertising 😀. You'll get to see the tree in person, looks much better as you can see the depth of movement. its hard to catch that on camera.
@@BonsaiEn HAHA yeah of course free advertising..come to think of it i sculled a glass of milk after watching..how weirds that!! HAHA I can see its a quality tree but look forward the real life veiwing.
This has really opened my eyes to juniper care and development. You are a great instructor. No wonder I have killed so many. I have acquired a juniper it is so pot bound it is roots and no soil. So even though it has a heavier trunk it doesn't appear to be very strong . How can I strengthen this tree? I'm rather lost.
Thanks Josh for this video. Man here in utah USA we never see nursery stock like this. So this perked my interest right back up. As of right now I'm at a cross roads of giving up or to start getting back what I once had. When my little brother passed away I've lost everything. That includes my absolute pride and joy, the sagebrush that's in my icon. Since then bonsai hasn't really felt the same.
It's always good to teach beginners not to remove too much off a Juniper as doing that at the wrong time or with a tree that can't take it can be very bad. In this case I can use my experience and knowledge of the tree to go a little further safely. When teaching you have to some what teach with some safety nets, once the student has a little more experience then the boundaries of what can be done can be stretched.
I just bought a juniper from a nursery, I’m excited to work on it but a little nervous, I don’t want to mess it up, it will be my first tree that I made myself. Is it ok to start trimming branches and working on it this time of year?
Good to see you back with a new video! Are you working on more advanced courses for the Bonsai Dojo? The first ones were great, hoping to see more, too.
We are currently uploading a full potting course which covers slip potting, potting into refinement and repotting. All have whiteboard theory lessons and demonstrations. Will also cover different types of growing pots and potting tools.
@@BonsaiEn Sounds great, looking forward to those! I’ve done courses from several of the big names online in the last few months and I’ve found yours to be the most comprehensive and helpful to a newbie like me. Much appreciated!
Hay Josh Great post as always. Can we have a price guide range or general idea for similar tree pre and post work. Would this go out for sale as is or would you look after it and let it fully recover before selling?
Before work the tree is worth around $300, after work it just depends on how much labour and materials went Into the tree. This particular tree will go back Into the growing area now ( away from sales tables ) to fill out and regain strength. It will get worked for a few seasons the potted up and sold as a proper Bonsai.
Nice nursery tree! Massive trunk. I have people coming over thinking the trees look like crap too, but they can’t see the future in the tree. Early work doesn’t make the tree look like a good bonsai. But it’s ok, as long as I see the potential and goal. Question, when would you consider to repot a tree like you worked on?
Depends on what you mean by repotting, this could be slip potting to a larger size container, potting up to refinement in a Bonsai pot, or taking a similar tree that's already in a Bonsai pot out to trim the roots and put it back in. The advise for these is all different. If you can clarify when can look at getting you thr right advice.
@@murray821 in other videos bonsai-en often encourages organic based soils in development as this encourages lengthening and thickening of roots which mirrors as lengthening and thickening of branches. Changing soil happens when your goal goes from development to refinement, where you'd switch To a coarser, more inroganic soil to encourage finer growth in roots and therefore finer growth in the branches
6mm wire, its fairly heavy for aluminium wire. its strong enough to help hold the bends with the help of the guy wires but not so thick that its physically hard to bend.
Good job and thanks for the video but I have to wonder... Why are your ears inside your cap? You are clearly a guy who spends a lot of time in front of the mirror and I do not understand this. Is it (some sort of) style or does it serve a purpose?
Damn you know I can't stop looking at it lmao. But after closely watching for a bit he has extended the cap out to better fit his hair/bun at the back in this makes the hat bigger all round not just at the back so it sits over his ears a little as well.

Do junipers always grow in that weeping presentation? I like the look
Some do some dont, just depends on the variety. This particular species is a prostrate so it is a ground cover which is why it grows down naturally.
I wish you would have shown when you Jin it and the size of the wire
How often do you water a 3 gallon pot? What are your ques to water it?
Where do you get such a huge juniper to start with?

What size wire did you use if the cascading branch?
6mm, you can find a size guide for aluminium wire on this page bonsai-en.shop/pages/bonsai-wire

why not use a turnbuckle on the guy wires

It's probably because his hat doesn't fit, it's too big for his head, but they are usually 1 size fits all and not very adjustable.
