Whenever the captain of the plane started frothing at the mouth and collapsed on the floor, I leaned over to my mate and said 'he must've had the fish'. He didn't get the reference.
Blimey Charlie, Mark is on total top form here. By the way 'Red Eye' was a terrific film and Cillian Murphy made it, but 'Flightplan' was dull as dishwater.
Actually Karen Black was just instructed to turn on the air pilot mode.....it was Charleston Heston who landed the plane. The main part was to figure out how to actually put him on the plane.
"You want it to be good meat-headed nonsense. But the problem is, it's not very good meat-headed nonsense. It's just... nonsense." I watched it several times in the theatre back then and every time enjoyed it just until the final act.
I think is awesome, a whole film in a single scenery where nothing happens, that cost 50 million and made 222 million I saw episodes of tv shows with bigger production, probably 49 million went to A list cast.
Without doubt the stupidest film I've seen this year. The end act, especially the child had me in fits of laughter. Absolutely ridiculous. I like stupid films, and I reckon I will see this again, but it was very funny.
taken unknown non stop are very entertaining films not great films but hey sometimes that's all you need for a Friday night I prefer my classics to be honest goodfellas etc but sometimes I just want some escapism and in his later roles neeson on the whole delivers the goods for me
The film’s story, script & lack of action is poor, but the cast leads off realistic acting, style, great characters & A score that works well. (63%) (3/5 stars) (mixed to positive)
She WAS in Capricorn One, great shout! I was in the same boat as Mayo until you said that. Even though she was only in Capricorn One for a couple of scenes, she was magnificent. Mind you, with dialogue like that anybody would be I suppose.
RIP Karen Black, who passed away in August 2013, obviously Kermode wasnt aware of that, and couldn't recall her amazing career..Easy Rider, Nashville, Five Easy pieces..So many more....Stick to hammering Michael Bay Mark..
Hmm, the jokey dismissive attitude about the late great Karen Black is kinda beneath Kermode. Hows about Academy Award nominated, two time Golden Globe winner Karen Black who co-starred in Five Easy Pieces, The Day of the Locust, The Great Gatsby etc. Sure, exploitation movies were a part of her career but there was a hell of a lot more there as well.
He has a great radio voice and is good at controlling the pace of the show. And the BBC does NOT care about charisma in its broadcasters. It just seems to like the uncontroversial ones.
rafaelnadalismyboo I do agree to the extent that Mark Kermode deserves his OWN show and someone more knowledgeable about film to bounce off of, though. But thats a structural decision made by the BBC. It seems like they don't know what to do with Mar so they plonk him on 5 Live (random) with someone who is not an expert in film.
rafaelnadalismyboo not sure if you watch the film review with mark on bbc news, but the news presenter on there is excellent in terms of bouncing off of mark
rafaelnadalismyboo I do think that you need someone like Mayo, however, who can control Mark and act as, well, the straight-man really, in order to get him to explain some of his more obscure references. Human Centipede 2 review: MK: It had me longing for the glory days of Jörg Buttgereit and the shorts that he made before he made Nekromantik... Simon: Just remind me about him?
samusarmada IMO I don't think anyone should be watching this show if they don't like cinema and don't understand Kermode's references. There are tonnes of other generic youtube critics for general fans to watch.
"He is a man with a gun..."
"He IS a man with a gun!"
"And he's gonna shoot it Non-Stop"
- made my day
The whole Karen Black thing was hilarious.
Whenever the captain of the plane started frothing at the mouth and collapsed on the floor, I leaned over to my mate and said 'he must've had the fish'. He didn't get the reference.
sulijoo I'm glad someone's on the same page haha.
It's so funny when the two of you have your little arguments. ^_^
Kermode and Mayo are best mates, they are closer than Karen Black's eyes.
I've never heard of Karen Black either
Have a look at Trilogy of Terror, third story, 'Amelia' for a good example of the type of films she was in.
Blimey Charlie, Mark is on total top form here.
By the way 'Red Eye' was a terrific film and Cillian Murphy made it, but 'Flightplan' was dull as dishwater.
"You need to see the BBC doctor." I thought he was the BBC doctor.
Karen Black: priceless tangent, that is!
Liam Neeson playing the same role since Taken.
Karen Black - that was a nice little detour ha
:)
I only know Karen Black because she was in a film called Firecracker with Mike Patton.
This film sounds familiar, of yeah, Person of Interest, Season 3, episode 13 '4C'.
(checks IMDB) Huh... He does look like Karen Black.
Liam Neeson could be the next Nicholas Cage if he plays his cards wrongly.
'Should have turned his phone off' lol
Karen Black's most commercially successful film, arguably, is The Great Gatsby with Redford. Also, Hitchcock's Family Plot.
Who's Karen Black?
Excellent review.
Surprised he couldn't think of 'Five Easy Pieces'.
"It's brill apparently."
Actually Karen Black was just instructed to turn on the air pilot mode.....it was Charleston Heston who landed the plane. The main part was to figure out how to actually put him on the plane.
LIAM NEESON IS... NON STOP!
And I am crying 😂🤣😅😂🤣
Trilogy of Terror. Great three-story movie where Karen shows her chops. Love the Zuni fetish doll.
"You want it to be good meat-headed nonsense. But the problem is, it's not very good meat-headed nonsense. It's just... nonsense." I watched it several times in the theatre back then and every time enjoyed it just until the final act.
That clip had more vitality than every Michael Fassbinder performance compressed into one!
I can't believe Simon Mayo didn't recognise who Karen Black was!

I really liked it, better than Taken and Unknown.
It was ridiculous. I was laughing towards the end, as were others. I honestly thought it was some sort of bizarre comedy at one point
comanchio1976 All opinion.

David Lawrence Graham Hopefully he will again with A Walk Among the Tombstones.
Hmm. I rather liked this one, though Mark's right in saying the 3rd act is a complete disaster (literally and figuratively).
Passenger 57 - 2014 redux
Liam Neeson: Tsch-tsch-tsch-tsch-tsch-tsch
Come on Mark, mention Zuni Doll!
A little sad and awkward considering Karen Black recently died.
that is what we all gonna do

Easy rider, Capricorn one, five easy pieces

I liked it.
I don't know who Karen Black is either
next time, say TRILOGY OF TERROR
You really think Mayo is gonna know that one?
Nesson on a plane ✈
I had to google Karen Black
Family Plot
ha ha ha ha ha!
Karen black? ... from Animal house?
RIP Karen Black, who passed away in August 2013, obviously Kermode wasnt aware of that, and couldn't recall her amazing career..Easy Rider, Nashville, Five Easy pieces..So many more....Stick to hammering Michael Bay Mark..

Is there any movie this Limey doesn't have an issue with?
twilight
Mayo is such a rubbish broadcaster, I mean how he even still has a job at the BBC is just unbelievable. He doesn't deserve to sit opposite Kermode.

If Liam Neeson is in it... it's a shite film.
And that accent, is that meant to be American? Embarrassing.
+VampiraJen Northern Irish
Lego movie?
