The best thing about the long Dark is that every time one of my characters die, I think about the cause of the death. Usually the death was set in motion by decisions or mistakes I made days earlier. Any decision you make has the potential to set off a series of events that will lead to fade into the long dark.
The Darkwalker challenge make the game scary. As well as the fact that thus type of apocalypse could actually happen in real life. A massive solar flare could disable all not hardened electronics and damage the earths magnetic field.
It could happen to some island place like great bear but a solar flare can be noticed and the grid can be shut down in time to ignore damages this isn’t a likely scenario
When playing the long dark, the feeling of being alone transpires into this feeling of peace. I don't feel dread, although I might be on my toes because of a bear, but it's peaceful it's a good feeling to reflect and otherwise relax.
You will never regret it! Well..... perhaps after trying the chalanges! I was shaking for hours after my first attempt at the darkwalker. It's addicting!
One of the best essays I've seen on YT about "The Long Dark". You so very well describe what playing the game is like, how it draws you in. I want to add, while the game doesn't have a tutorial as such, it greatly helps feeling more at home on Great Bear Island, if the player starts the story mode "Wintermute" on a lower difficulty first. Surviving the sandbox after that will be a less daunting experience.
i eased myself into the game with Wintermute at first, and it was a great introduction to the basic mechanics - the story's interesting, but it mostly serves as a great tutorial for new players. i've been trying my hand at interloper, quite unsuccessfully! i'm so glad you enjoyed the video, thank you for your comment
This is a beautiful video... thank you for making it. I have loved the long dark for a very long time. I play many different games, but I keep coming back to the long dark. Your opening statement really hit me. Have spent the last 5 ish years in complete desolation.... I have got so used to it I have lived 500 days on interloper.
somehow i knew you'd like this game! it's really something you can immerse yourself in, every day is a story, like you say. thanks so much for watching :)
I want to play this game ! I love survival games ! And this game seems to have a more realistic approach to survival games then most ! Excellent video ! 🙌
Yes it is! In fact many survival games are "conquer the world" games, which is disappointing. The Long Dark (next to This War Of Mine and Rain World) is the least "zero to hero" survival game I know :) I also recommand you Rain World, my favorite game, also survival!
I have been playing T.L.D. for almost eight years now and have spent almost 7,400 on Great Bear Island. I was playing The Last Of Us and really enjoyed it, but mentioned to a friend that I was interested in finding something that incorporated the crafting aspect of The Last of Us without the shoot-outs and zombie- like creatures. Something more realistic. He turned me on to T.L.D. and I still love it.
I always love finding a new group of videos and instantly seeing amazing games in their channel. Beautiful videos 🥺🥺 I supported Long dark when they first went early access with just the one map, it's such a vibe game I always come back to when nothing else is going on.
I've gotten to know this game around 2015, so I pretty much know why I like it. BUT your video is so well done and your exporation about why it's such a great game and what makes it unique really rings true for me too. You worded it perfectly and really made me appreciate The Long Dark even more!
hey this video was really well made, probably the best video to summarise why i cant explain the reason i come back to this game every few months and rack up hundreds of hours in it. you deserve so much more views!! appreciate the content :)
Ho-ly-sheeeet!! I’ve been playing the long dark since the alpha stage and this is maybe the best description of how it actually feels to play the game. Why it’s sooo different than every other survival game yet with same mechanics and how you feel that difference from the get go. Firewatch is another game in this art style and touches some similar themes of alone/loneliness in a different yet similar way.
I was lonely most of my life ! Even though I had many people around , such as friends or affiliates , I was truly alone ! I only started to feel that empty feeling dissapate , when I had my daughters . They were everything I ever wanted and needed to fill that void , that I had known all my life . To this day I spend all my time and effort on my teenage daughters ! Without them I would be nothing , but an empty shell of existence ! I’m am thankful that I have them . I truly am happy in ways I can never express , even though it’s tough being a single dad ( financial wise )it’s the best thing in the world for me , who was a person who was truly lonely !
I really love the Aurora event and this game as a whole As a sami we have a tradition or I guess more of a superstition about spirits and how angering the northern lights by being loud or looking at them too long will cause them to kill you it feels familiar
I've *loved* playing this game. Even during what I would call this games most unfair moments, I've never raged and cried that "that was BS!" because every moment I play, I know how my character is going to meet their end. I'm just a guest in an unfair, brutal wilderness that has no compassion, no mercy, and doesn't care about how hard I fight against it. Because at the end of the day, I'm just passing by. It's the classic tale of man versus nature; and nature will always win.
Wonderful essay about the game that I and so many others love. You truly capture the experience of what this piece of art is all about! I'm a veteran of this game having spent multiple thousands of hours on Great Bear Island, and I just wanted to thank you for spending some time immersed in the beauty that is The Long Dark!
I love this game. I would definitely call it a horror game mostly achieved with the constant dred of the inevitable! Although it does have its share of jump scares! Damn corner bears! Lol
Very nice and motivating explanation man, as someone who hates fantasies like elden ring, robotic games like crysis and enjoyed both versions of dying light, i myself literally traveled from Iran to canadian nature with just looking at this game for long hours, a masterpiece indeed. i don't understand whats the point of elden ring like games that draws people's attention so drastically which is really unbelievable while this reality oriented game with such a simple animation creates an atmosphere so so deep that it truly became a memorable joy and good memory. I think some people value true and valuable art and need to be connected deeply with the movie or game they are watching/playing....
I like to imagine this game takes place in the same universe as Disco Elysium, and the Attributes are talking to and guiding the player character when relevant.
Long dark is always a silent game. Only your character and the mother nature. I always being alone with my thoughts. Which makes me more fascinated about the game. Absolute cinema
Great vid, this game is beautiful to look at and probably the most authentic and fun survival game I've ever played, all that being said I think hinterland really needs to dial in on the longevity of the adventure..once you get a good handle on the mechanics, survival tactics and you're own style of stalking the snows, forests and towns in the world, and you've got some good tools by you're side like you're reliable bow and rifle, some good clothes crafted from days spent curing the hides of the games top threats that are wandering the game like you are...once that's all said and done the game really does taper off. You've become the apex predator of the map for lack of a better word, and the only thing that temporary re kindles the excitement you felt in the initial days is either playing higher difficultys..which just really slows down the process of building the same character by making items more scarce..or you end up taking more exciting but unnecessary risks on whatever difficultly you're playing just to see what happens, to add spice to it. Eventually...unless you're goal is to physically lay eyes on every part of the map to see what it looks like..the reasons to venture farther and farther into the world quickly evaporate once you're character and you're skills reach a certain level of establishment....there ends up being nothing to do for the player, and you just feel like you've won the game. The challenges and threats to my life need to keep coming hinterland..and please God don't let it be in mechanics like that cougar 😂
If you mean this on Interloper Level, I agree, eventually. But it´s an awfully long run to get to that with all regions covered. Not to mention so many hours of play that you´re wondering where to get the cloth you need for the repair of the man made clothes, feather stuffed bedroll and re-forge of knife and hatchet you´re still using when Lower Great Bear has already been stripped of cloth, sharpening stones etc.. Do you really need to go to the Far Territory? yep! 😃
Off-topic: I wish the Dog Stars were written at least a little more ... normal? I like many of the parts of the book but in the end I couldn't finish because of how odd the writing was ...
I've never been more insulted by a game developer than Hinterland. They cash grabbed with a DLC and now are making a sequel to an unfinished game. Any type of criticism on their steam forums is instantly censored followed by a ban. It's sickening, the game is a decade old and still never EVER going to be finished. Canada. Shame on them.
They were planning on releasing the final episode before the end of the year but things didnt pan out. You cant really take down your announcement trailer from the game awards. Plus Tales From The Far Territory adds a ton of additional content that ties into the story mode.
The best thing about the long Dark is that every time one of my characters die, I think about the cause of the death. Usually the death was set in motion by decisions or mistakes I made days earlier. Good to be back!!
i really gotta play the long dark fr fr
Same
you gifted me this game YEARS ago :')
You will never regret it! Well..... perhaps after trying the chalanges! I was shaking for hours after my first attempt at the darkwalker. It's addicting!
This video was so well made, it’s a shame you dont have more views when you really deserve it😮
thank you so much, that really means a lot to me :') i don't mind so much about the views, but comments like this are what really make me happy!

this video felt like my way of thanking Hinterland for making this game, and for the many nights I've spent in isolation. really glad you enjoyed
Good video! I spent hours and hours playing this game. To me it's so much more than survival, it's stories day by day as I play
somehow i knew you'd like this game! it's really something you can immerse yourself in, every day is a story, like you say. thanks so much for watching :)

thank you so much! glad you enjoyed :)
This video was very well done and a great love letter to the game! Thank you very much!
thank you very much! i definitely wanted to write a love letter to this game, with the amount of time i've spent with it :')

This is a wonderful video, it does truly explain the feeling of playing the Long Dark. The suffering, the silence, the beauty, the fear.
Amazing video! Super well done! I love the part on the aurora!!!
Absolutely beautiful video essay, loved every part of it!
I've played hundreds of games over decades. No game has given me the type of feeling like this. I can't explain it. It's such an addictive experience.
I’d love to see you make a video on the survival horror game “Signalis” in a similar style to this video!
i'll check it out!!
@@CucuOnGames +1 for the signalis review
Lord, this is a pretty nice video. You did a really good job.
thank you! i'm really glad you enjoyed it

I really love the Aurora event and this game as a whole

Nice video. Well presented!
Firewatch was my cherished companion during the chilly December of 2017
my partner and i played through firewatch a few years back, it was amazing

Fatigue is the most difficult metric to satisfy in TLD. Do not get tired.
Brilliant prose worthy of this work of art!
Long dark is always a silent game. Only your character and the mother nature. I always being alone with my thoughts. Which makes me more fascinated about the game. Absolute cinema
Definitely the most realistic take of an apocalypse that a game could use, Whoever came up with the idea is genius.
Amazing video!
I love tld lol:
The quotes spawn though:
Geomagnetic storm blah blah blah
"Cold is cold" - Some dude
this was great, i think ill try this one out
Much like the game, this video is well underrated. Thanks for making this.
very glad you enjoyed it, thank you :)
Really well done as tld player i enjoyed it.

Fine suggestion, but why be an asshole about it?
Oh man, so cool. You could easily get more people watching with S M Zeus!!!
